5 comments about Stories from Spain / Historias de España (Side by Side Bilingual Books) (English and Spanish Edition).

  1. I bought the whole series when I started to teach myself Spanish. It's a great bi-lingual starter, with Spanish on the right hand pages and the English translations on the left hand pages. It's a great starting point to get yourself dug-in to Spanish, at a simple to middle level of literature. The stories are great fun to read, and I have read them numberous times with better understanding and speed each time. I wish they had more of these in the series... they really are entertaining, as well as instructional.

  2. This is an excellent book for someone who speaks a little Spanish, but is not comfortable with fluent conversations. It has one short story in Spanish on one page and then in English on the next, so you can always check yourself, or read it in English, if you prefer. You get to see the verbs conjugated properly and can learn some of the phrases. The stories are interesting and help to make you a little more cultured. I definitely recommend this book.

  3. I speak Spanish fairly well and can read technical manuals in Spanish without a problem, but I haven't read many novels in Spanish. I bought this book to advance my Spanish reading ability hoping it would help me to progress to more advanced works. I'm still in that transitioning phase, but I enjoyed this book enough to purchase two more from the same collection. Each page of Spanish text is accompanied by the corresponding page of English text on the opposite side. If the reader has trouble with an idiomatic expression or an unfamiliar word, the translation is readily available.

My wife is in a similar situation, but her first language is Spanish and her second is English. She too has found this book useful as a tool. If you're learning Spanish or English and wish to polish off your language skills, try this book.

  4. I graduated with a BA degree in Spanish more than 30 years ago, and although I am quite fluent, I am currently reviewing and brushing up on my skills. Stories from Spain is not only a good book for intermediate Spanish students, but also for those of us who need to "get up to speed" once again. The bilingual format does it's job, which is to allow the reader to gain fluency without getting discouraged by having to constantly look up words in the dictionary. It is also a great way for the student to get immediate feedback on his/her reading comprehension.
The legends are clever, heartwarming, and many contain a moral lesson. I thoroughly enjoyed each story.

  5. This is a true bilingual book in Spanish and English. I love the format of presenting the Spanish on one page and the English equivalent on the facing page. You can easily go from one to the other. Because the stories are short and pretty basic, if you are trying to learn Spanish it is a great tutoring tool. You should already know some basic Spanish before reading the book, but for the intermediate or advanced beginner it is a great way to increase your vocabulary and practice correct sentence structure. In addition, the stories are from Spain and so teach some of the history and legends to help you get a feel for the country. Finally, there is a small dictionary at the back of the book that contains most of the words that you might encounter in the text.

Whether you use it for a review, to learn Spanish, to increase your Spanish vocabulary or just like the stories, it is a great little book and this style of dual translation books is highly recommended as an adjunct to a Spanish course of any type to recommend to speed your learning of a foreign language.

  1. This book starts off well; it is well written, poignant, humorous, and insightful. Somewhere before the end of Italy though, Elizabeth Gilbert goes from all these lovely and positive traits to a person bent on proving that she deserves to have whatever the heck it is she wants. In fact, we should all do ourselves the favor of becoming self absorbed and selfish.

And that is the journey that Gilbert suffers us on. She deserves a break today and everyday and sets out to figure out, "What does Elizabeth want." Period.

And really how terrific is that, an advance for a book, this book, telling all of us how to achieve selfishness, like we need told, duh.

I really enjoyed the first third of the book, but Gilbert gets to be so full of herself, her wisdom, her desires that is just got b-o-r-i-n-g.

  3. Come, reza, ama / Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia (Spanish Edition)

  5. This book is amazing. I bought it cause one person in my family is going through something similar and it has really helped me to give her advice. I haven't finish the book but i can't stop reading it. Definitely something that happens to many women.

  1. Leí este libro porque la historia me parecia similar al viaje que hizo my padre en moto en 1964. ¡Pero esperaba más motocicleta! En la mayoria de este libro, Che y su compañero no andan en moto. Igual me gustó.

  2. I got the book in good condition, it took a little longer than I expected to come though. I didn't realize that it was from a library and would have spine stickers. oh well

  3. NO HAY NADA MAS LINDO QUE LEER ACERCA DE NUESTROS PAISES, APRENDER DE ELLOS, POR LOS OJOS DE UN JOVEN VIAJANTE COMO "CHE GUEVARA". SE LOS RECOMIENDO! LEANLO! :)

  1. This map is enormous. Don't expect to take it with you. Kind of a waste of money, even though it's fun to look at before you go. I'm sure there is a smaller one you can get at the park.

  2. We're using this map now to plan a Patagonia trip next year. I wish I had 1:24000 scale maps to supplement this overview. A 1:80K map with 100 meter contours leaves a lot to the imagination. However it is very helpful supplenet to a good guidebook like the Lonely Planet Patagonian Andes book.

  3. Used this on our trek to Torres del Paine. It was our favorite map- we had to others- but this one is the best!

  4. This was the best of the maps for the Parque Nacional that I saw while there. Good detail of the terrain, but would have liked more consistent information on trail distances in km. Distances are recorded in hours it takes to hike each segment, which is a standard that the other maps of the park use. However, the times given were a good estimate of the time it takes to hike each part of the trail. What isn't clear from any of the maps is the difficulty or rough conditions of many of the trails. In general, trekking in the park is moderately challenging, but the condition of many of the trails (rocky, steep, and/or highly eroded in places) makes it more so.

  5. This is just what I needed. The paths are clearly marked as are the camp sites and contour lines. Some of the print is very small and sometimes blends in too much with the background colour, but you will be able to work it out. All walks are also given an approximate walking time which really helps give an idea of the terrain before you go there.

  1. I hate maps where north is not at the 12 o'clock position. This is one of those maps. It's all the more difficult when you learn that the map only has a small sliver of Bs. As. It's confusing trying to use this with other maps that are more comprehensive because of this orientation issue.

This map doesn't travel well either. The lamination is poor, so a couple of trips around humid Buenos Aires and this thing is pretty beat up.

  2. My normal way of finding places depends pretty heavily on the ordinal directions. I spent quite a bit of time learning street names before my trip. Having the map oriented as it is--north basically on the bottom of the map made it confusing to me the first few days as I had to reverse my directions. I would use this map on future visits because of the street names and numbers, but I might get a second map that has north at the top.

  3. I've used this map for learning BA's streets during 2 trips there, each of 5 weeks' duration. I walk for 4-7 hours every day with this map. I wouldn't go to BA without it. During my first trip, my husband lost this map a week after we arrived. Another larger more expensive map we had was impossible to wrangle discreetly with on the streets and using it marked us as tourists - not a good idea from a personal security perspective. My husband bought another copy of the preferred map at a kiosko but it was difficult to find. On my next trip there 9 months later, alone, the kioskos and major bookstores were out of this map. After 2 weeks, I found some at the book store beside the cinemas of Recoleta Village, for about $US4.00 apiece. Save yourself valuable travel time by purchasing this map online in advance of leaving on your trip. I've found this map and its lamination to be especially durable. (But I fold it only along its intended creases.) Having folded it 1000 times, I can still read the street names situated along this map's folds; that's rare with unbound street maps. Because it's so compact and slim, it slides easily into the exterior pockets of my tote bag, quickly accessible to me but invisible to others in crowded spaces.

I only wish that de Dios published a second map in the same format of the farther out barrios of BA, stretching all the way to include Tigre. For now, I resort to single-page printouts I find online of those areas.

As for this map's atypical ordinals' placement, well that's how portenos visualize their own city. This layout identifies an aspect of porteno culture, similar in nature to seeing or dancing real Argentine Tango, enjoying Argentine meals and ingredients, and learning portenos' Castellano dialect and accent. When I use this map, I feel privileged for this opportunity to learn their city their way. It also means that I haven't wasted my travel funds on experiences I can have back home. The fact that I'm completely wrong to regard Palermo as being north-east of Recoleta doesn't bother me. Because what really matters is that the main parallel central arteries which are long, wide, dense, and change names along their routes, are more quickly graspable when they're laid out horizontally, so that your eye can follow them their whole length. (We read from side-to-side in most languages.) This, in turn, helps with planning rides on the subte lines. So this strange layout actually makes sense for this particular city. It's user-friendly.

  4. Received this - have had the opportunity to study it and it will come in handy for our upcoming trip to Argentina. Appears to be small enough to fit into travel bag and not bulky for referring to it while walking the streets of Buenos Aires.

  5. I was disappointed when I received this map, and perhaps if I had read the reviews, I would have avoided it. Certainly nonstandard in its northeast-southwest orientation, it was difficult for me to make sense of without rotating it 45 degrees. And the fact that it covers a fraction of the city tells me it should be called something like "Selected Neighborhoods of Buenos Aires". The pullout map that comes with the Lonely Planet Buenos Aires Encounter is much more useful for my purposes.

  1. It's a quick and easy reference guide to help you learn while in the privacy of your own home, as well as while out in the world and actually using it while in conversation with a Spanish speaking person. I recommend it! It's been very useful this week while in San Miguel.

  2. I really like this book. Fits perfectly in your handbag or saddlebag out on the trail. All the basics are covered here and even some things you may never need to say at all - such as various pick up line in bars! There is a nice sense of humor paired with common sense throughout this phrasebook. However, if you need to find a particular word for a particular item you will need a true Engligh/Spanish dictionary rather than a phrasebook. I carry both with me almost constantly.

  3. As usual Lonely Planet has the best. Lots of phrases grouped into sections ie) restaurants, shopping etc. Good Eng-Spa dictionary and vice versa. Easy to use.

  4. Easy to navigate, read, and carry...only downfall i could find is that its hard to find the colors translated. I find this important but unfortunately there is no section for them.

  5. Had been looking for this phrasebook since I went to Mexico in Nov 06. I was able to use it extensively while there. Excellent helps!
