- This book left a bitter taste for 'star' planners with lots of capital thrown at them. Some hilites: The 'Plan for the Valley' was a failure in implementation (so says the author), the author's work in Baltimore has been thoroughly analyzed unfavorably by urban geogrpher David Harvey (I agree with Harvey), the author's failed planning attempts in Iran --when the Shah was in power!--are politically naive, the New Orleans CBD will be under water in a 100 years (so much for ecological planning and the techniques this firm introduced through McHarg), and other than for the big $ boys, who really cares about Atlantic City?
More: the book is filled with b/w photos of white guys in suits standing around plans and models. On page 185 Wallace praises a diagram of a water budget "as an effective planning tool" for Chesapeake Bay; it is undecipherable.
Wallace is a big man with a big belly who likes to snipe...and praise himself. Planning rah-rahs at APA should've reviewed this work before bestowing so much on so little. Doing it 'his way' should not become the norm for planning pros.
I bought this book online ($10) from a former employee of Wallace. It was sealed and never opened.
