2 comments about Submarines: Leviathans of the Deep.

  1. T.L. Francis' Submarines is interesting, and covers the development of the submarine in the navies of the world, combined with its use and deployment. Filled with pictures and text, it is very useful for thise seeking to learn about the broad scope of submarine history before venturing into the more complex territory of Blind Man's Bluff or a World War II topic.

  2. The pictures are great! However, the text is filled with so many historical errors as to cast doubt on the entire book. Examples: p16 Turtle attacked Eagle in New York, not Boston, Harbor. Eagle was not copper sheathed until after the Revolution. p79 Nautilus did not finish off Soryu. As JANAC knew even in 1945, Nautilus attacked Kaga. The only torpedo that hit failed to explode. p80 Lockwood did not become Commander of Submarines, Pearl Harbor until Feb'43. p86 Wahoo did not fire five torpedos, it fired all six in the famous down-the-throat shot. p87 WWII US submarines were most assuredly equipped with air search radar. In fact, Plunger, going on the 3rd patrol of the War on 12/14/41, was already equipped with an SD set. p88 Reich saw & heard 3 hits on Kongo, not 1. And so on (I have not cross checked WWI or non-US claims). It's hard to believe the author is an historian.

3 comments about Evolution of the Pedal Car and Other Riding Toys With Prices: 1884 - 1970's.

  1. -This is a nice book for anybody looking for beautiful and color pictures about pedal cars.
I guess some plans about pedal car detail construction could become this book more attractive.

  2. 302 page edition (volume # 4) featuring year 2,000 values. More than 600 individual large, sharp, full color pictures are shown. Includes over 100 pages of manufacturer catalog pages, advertisements, newspaper clippings, original postcards, and much more. Pedal Car fans will enjoy this work and find it an invauable reference.

  3. Lousy, only fore the beginner, light on test, very poor photos, poor quality paper, amature photo shots taken by collectors NOT photographers! Could be a lot better, what is Vol.5 like? i would like to order then review this. Seen JUVENILE AUTOMOBILES A Pictorial Histroy of Children's Pedal & Powered Vehicles both Vols.1 and 2 are excellent! by Apollo Press.UK DO YOU HAVE THESE IN STOCK can you get them for me?

4 comments about Standard Catalog of Jeep: Includes Early Military Jeeps (Standard Catalog).

  1. Beautiful illustrations and a great amount of information. Very enjoyable as long term Jeep owner and enthusiast.

  2. In addition to the first reviewers comments; this book also omitted the optional Perkins diesel used in the 1960s in CJ-5s and CJ-6s. This engine was used domestically. The F-head is listed as standard in the 5/6, the V6 is listed as optional in the right years but no Perkins is listed. I can almost understand not including export engines, but it is sold as a standard catalog of the Jeeps that were built in Toledo as I understand it. Omitting options that are fairly well known among enthusiasts domestically and overseas keeps me from giving this book a better rating.

Haven't had time to look over everything else yet.

Good reference but definitely incomplete unless I've just missed some section somewhere, in which case I might give it four stars instead of three. But then the information isn't where it should have been included.

  3. The book was good, but it did not cover all the jeeps :0(, I expected this to cover all the jeeps ever built, but it completely missed the 2.4 litre and 2.7 litre diesel CJ5's, CJ7's, & CJ8's that were built in Ohio for export.

I also felt that some jeeps did not get full coverage and some of the original sales brochures told you more about them.

A great piece of work, but should not be sold as covering every jeep ever built.

  4. This book combines a complete factual reference guide with a clear and fascinating historical narrative. The photos are excellent; many previously unpublished. Foster is the best Jeep writer out there.

2 comments about Pickups: Classic American Trucks.

  1. This book shows classic pickup bodies, some with modern engines, very clearly. The photos are exceptionally vivid in color. The chosen trucks are highly interesting, and the settings for the photographs very well chosen.

I was not even aware it was possible to produce a book with level of clarity in the photographs. As a photographer myself, I was left wondering precisely how the photographs were done. i.e. Shutter speed, fstop, film type, filters, camera, lens and lighting. While the subject of the book, trucks, is not photography, the pictures, none the less, could serve as models of vehicle photography. Even a single paragraph on the topic would be appreciated by this reviewer. In a lucky world, perhaps the author or someone else familiar with the production techniques will further comment.

My three year old son loves trucks, and this book has been a nice vehicle to help us share some time together.

  2. If you like pickups from the beginning up until the 1950's, this is for you. Excellent photography, highlights some models not usually done (Diamond T, Hudson, Reo). Good home-grown stories about each one (where it came from, what the owner is like, et al) makes this book one of my favorites.

3 comments about Introduction to Aerospace Propulsion, An.

  1. This book provides an excellent foundation in aerospace propulsion systems. It provides a comprehensive insight into the design and operation of different types of propulsion systems for aerospace application. These include turbomachinery, rockets and ramjets, piston engines, spacecraft systems, engine systems, fuels and combustion.

The aerospace industry has experienced a consistent growth over the years and is expected to continue to do so in the future. Concurrent to the continuous development of existing aerospace propulsion systems, major efforts are now being devoted to the development of new technologies applicable to the propfan, variable cycle engines and air-breathing space launchers. With such developments, the student of aerospace propulsion will benefit immensely from a solid foundation set from studying this excellent book.

  2. As a personal friend of Prof. Saarlas, and having taken a course in Aerospace Propulsion from him - using this text, I can say that this book affords one of the most excellent introductions to propulsion characteristics, and design considerations. A must-have for anyone pursuing design work, or workign on their masters in aerospace engineering.

  3. I read this book knowing absolutley nothing about the propulaion systems of aicraft. I used the information I learned to write a comprehensive extensive reserch/experimental essay on the "Design Principals of Propellors". This book is good for anyboy with an intrest
