2 comments about ACTION JOE: The Story of the French GI Joe (Figurines and Toys).

  1. I have a modest GI Joe collection. When I was stationed in Berlin I found Action Man, the Palitoy licenced copy of GI Joe, in the NAAFI (the British edition of the Post Exhange) and have 8 in my collection. Until "Action Joe," I didn't know that the French had their own GI Joe. I've heard about Japan's edtion, and Gyperman.

The photos were great! I reluctantly rated this book with just four stars because the English translation is clumsy. I shudder to think how my own French sounds to someone from France! The photo layouts are first rate and seem to cover the entire line. Now I know what to look for at the next GI Joe convention.

  2. First, let me begin by saying that I am a 100% bilingual French Canadian and just felt that I had to write this to express how disappointed I am by this book. Although the photos and the contents are absolutely incredible, it is really unfortunate that a publisher would allow such a poorly translated book to hit the market... And for once I am not complaining about the French version!!!

Originally written in French, this reference piece shamefully disfigures the English language with its extremely poor syntax and very basic spelling mistakes, which could have been easily picked by even the most rudimentary word publishing software. To me, the language problem was such that it completely ruined my reading experience and made this collecting tool little less than a collection of images with unreadable garbled foot notes.

On the other hand, one can tell that the author totally knows what he is talking about (when one manages to understand what the author is trying to say) and if you are fluent in French, I strongly recommend purchasing this book in its original format. It is such insight to see all the great things the French did for 5 years with the Adventure Team / GI Joe line in the late 70's, early 80's, that I think every serious vintage GI Joe collector should have this in his reference library.

So in conclusion, +10 for the choice of subject, images and layout, zero for the language level. English speaking buyers beware!!

3 comments about Doll Values Antique To Modern (Doll Values Antique to Modern).

  1. This book is missing antique dolls by certain leading German manufacturers. The book makes reference to a specific manufacturer but does not include dolls of the manufacturer.

  2. This is another excellent entry in a series of very useful books. Good basic information on a variety of doll makers, good illustrations. I like the range of values given for dolls depending on the condition, since not all dolls are mint, and there can be an enormous difference between fair conditon and excellent.

  3. The 9th updated and expanded edition of "Doll Values: Antique To Modern" is a justifiable best-seller because it is a 'must' for any dedicated doll collector. "Doll Values" nicely pairs clear, small color photos with the latest doll values, offers a starting point for building up a reference library, and helps classify different styles and types of dolls. "Doll Values" is a 'must' for any serious collector - and many a general-interest library holding will also find it an important and popular addition to their Antiques/Collectibles reference collections.

2 comments about Cherish Me Always: Teddy Bears & Warm Fuzzies (Cherish Me Always).

  1. Cherish Me Always is a series of 4 books (3 have been published as of Spring 2002) that have grown out of the author's photograph collection. The photographs are shared in a graphic format that compliment the vintage photos. Poetry and literary quotes maintain the feeling of childhood storybook wonder. The child subjects of "Teddy Bears and Warm Fuzzies" are both girls and boys. Many of the toy companions shown are teddy bears, but not exclusively so. There are many identifiable and unidentifiable plush toys that do not seem to be teddy bears, but all of the plush animals seem to be loved and cherished by their child companions. This book is an enchanted journey back to the childhood days of bygone years.

  2. This was a wonderful book! If you love history, children, photography, or teddy bears, you have to purchase this book! There is nothing on the market like this. The photographs pictured are so endearing! This makes a great gift book! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

1 comments about Coca-Cola Collectible Bean Bags & Plush (Collector's Guide to Coca Cola Items Series).

  1. Coca-Cola bean bags are instantly recognizable by their bottle of Coke. But while Polar Bears are obvious, it's harder to distinguish Jaguars from Cheetahs. Luckily, this handsome book contains large, colorful photographs and pertinent details to help a collector manage a wide variety of Coca-Cola bean bags critters. And, the comprehensive list of all Coca-Cola bean bags in Appendix A is a very useful feature to track what's in your collection.

The chapter on tags is especially helpful, with highly readable photos of the in's and out's of the authentic tags. It's too bad the country flags were not similarly illustrated for the International sets so we could learn more about the country each critter came from. Still, it's a great book to show kids what different animals look like in all the countries where Coca-Cola is sold.

5 comments about Care Bears Collectibles: An Unauthorized Handbook and Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Firstly, this is not a book done by an expert or advanced collector (for proof, type in the authour's name, and you will see she has penned more than 50 books on collectibles.) In fact, there are several items in this book -including a My Little Pony play set!- that have been mislabeled as Care Bear items, as well as various home-made items being considered on par with factory made items.
There are many photos of items in less-than-pristine shape, not to mention the photos aren't very professionally done, leading me to conclude this book exists merely because it's filling a niche that should have been filled by a proper Care Bear collector and expert. Lastly, don't even expect this to give you accurate lists of what is out there - it's essentially just a hodge podge of photos of a Care Bear collection, and I may add, of nothing terribly rare or unusual. A cursory glance at eBay will yield better photos and rarer items than this book will. But, there's nothing else that I know of out there, so if you want a Care Bear collectibles book, you are basically stuck with this one until something better comes along.

  2. I bought the Care Bear book mainly to see what else was available besides just the plushes and posables, however, when I went to look at the minis---there are none of the Care Bear Cousin minis pictured or even mentioned! I know the pics come out of a private collection but a mention of these would be helpful. Also, there was not info on all the posables' accessories! There was no mention of the British Bears or the ultra rare Care Bear Cousins. Prices were not too terribly out of line in comparison to what I have sold items for in the past. On a positive note, pics were nice and the author showed lots of neat Care Bear items.

  3. I just want to say that I think it's about time someone made a book about Care Bear collectibles. I have been a huge fan of the Care Bears and the Care Bear Cousins for a long time, and I'm glad someone finally made a book with buying info about the Care Bear collectibles. I've been wanting to buy Care Bear collectibles for a long time, so I'm really glad I can finally find out how to buy them.

  4. This book is the best ever! Don't listen to "rainbowdragon" about not containing the right price! The author said "Prices may vary".This book contains over 500 color photos about Care Bears.Hurry! Get a copy while supplies last!!! I really enjoyed reading this book because I have always loved Care Bears and I love to learn about them!

  5. This book is very well done. It is extreamly accurate and has helped me through some hard times selecting how much to pay for a bear. It's a great book for Care Bear Collecters both Young and Old.

5 comments about McDonald's Collectibles: Identification and Value Guide (McDonald's Collectibles: Identification & Values).

  1. This beautiful 352 page identification and value guide has been updated with 1999 prices. It contains over 2,300 full color, large, sharp photos. Provides collector's tips, the McDonald's Story, the early days and more history. Nearly every type of McDonald collectible is included. Every category is clearly described. A valuable reference work that will be referred to often !

  2. Why not have McDonald's have a substitute for a value meal instead of french fries, like your potatoe pancake. Have your express in Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York, have thick or milk shakes, like you do hot and cold drinks. PLEASE GIVE TO MCDONALD'S

  3. Needs to be update

  4. this book contains not just Happy Meals from the beginnings of McD, but all other types of McD collectibles like tableware, clothing, Christmas things, sports cars & cards, etc. etc.

  5. What luck to run accross this wonderful guide the first time searching for such a book. This is a very large book, with color pictures of all type of McDonald's collectibles-in addition to all the happy meal toys. It also provides a facinating history of how the business got started along with pictures of the founders and the 1st restaurants, also included are pictures and values of memorabilia such as uniforms, paper french fry bags and the large ride on toys and Ronald figures used inside the restaurants. This books gets a A+ from me.
