5 comments about Bleuette: The Doll and Her Wardrobe.
- Being a doll collector and reproduction doll artist for over 30 years I have a very extensive doll library as well as doll collection. This book is an excellent reference source for anyone like myself who wants to learn about the history of Bleuette, how to paint her features authentically as well as study her extensive wardrobe. There are many wonderful color photographs, especially helpful for close-ups of Bleuette's facial features and patterns to make her a very lovely authentic wardrobe.
This book is even wonderful as a gift for people who love dolls who may just love beautiful books to decorate their home with, a coffee tablebook.
I love this book and thank the author for sharing her knowledge with fellow collectors and Bleuette fans around the world.
- If you can only afford one book on that very collectible fashion doll "Bleuette", this is a wonderful choice. A large hardcover, the pictures and history are wonderful and cover it all. There are also original Gautier-Languereau patterns included, so you can sew for Bleuette yourself.
The overall quality of the book itself is well worth the price. I'm very happy I purchased Bleuette: The Doll and Her Wardrobe by Barbara Hilliker.
-
I agree with the previous commentator that this book is basically a coffee table book about Bleuette ,her history, and her family.
So, if you need a book about Bleuette's clothing patterns, then this book is probably not for you.
There are other books out there that are specific to Bleuette clothing patterns....but not this one.
The photos in this book are absolutely amazing though...that is for sure!
Please note that this book is not just a picture book. This book does indeed contain lots of information about the history of Bleuette. Also, the photos are mesmerizing (most photos being very large and in full color).
I believe that if you are a Bleuette collector, then it's good to have a nice book about the doll's history. If so, then this book will serve that purpose nicely.
- I purchased the combination of this book and another, thinking I was going to receive an extensive collection of Bleuette patterns. Instead, I got coffee table books with only a few patterns drafted by the author, rather than the original patterns. I found the advertising text misleading, and would not have ordered them had I known I was not going to get real Bleuette patterns.
- I love this book and if you love Bleuette, you will read this book cover to cover. Barbara Hilliker is one of the experts we collectors rely on to tell us more about the lovely French doll produced from 1905-1960. The doll was produced as a give-away to sell a weekly periodical to young French girls. Each issue of the paper contained patterns to dress the doll. These patterns are what make the doll so popular. There were over 1300 patterns published, and this author has been influential in getting some of these patterns to the public.

5 comments about Teddy Bears.
- what can I say? I bought this book 5 days ago and anybody that has been to my house since has spent the entire time reading it! I cant get enough - give me more! The photographer has extraordinary talent and the captions are absolutely delightful! I cant wait for the next one!
- I just fell in love with Steiff Bears as a child growing up in England. As a British expat living in California seeing Marc Hoberman's "Teddy Bears" brought back fond childhood memories of "chocky" my constant childhood companion. The personalities of the bears come to life through the photography making this book something special for bear lovers the world over.
- I Picked up this gem of a book at a Teddy Bear convention in Chicago. What a wonderfully beautiful book this is. The photographs are gorgeous(how did they get those bears to pose like that) and the text reveals a lot about each bears personality. If your a Teddy Bear LOVER and collector like I am then the book Teddy Bears is a must for your collection!
- I am a book lover and a Teddy bear lover and this is one of the most amazing books I have ever seen. I was recently at the book show in Chicago and was stopped dead in my tracks by the photographs and the delightful captions in this book. The bears are cute beyond words, the captions are endearing, and the young photographer and writer is going to go places. He is destined for quite a career. This book will become part of my personal collection and also is slated for Christmas giving, baby showers, birthdays, and anyone else that gets a gift from me.
- If you only by one Teddy Bear book this year, make it this one! In fact, if you are buying this book as a present, better buy two. Because when it arrives and you look through it, you're going to want one for yourself! These bears have a whimsy and outlook on the world that's all their own! Marc Hoberman is a fantastic photographer with a real knack for bringing these bears, and their world, to vivid life. The captions are gently humorous, giving readers an insight into the world as bears see it. Captain Sam and pool-playing Douglas Padpaw are among my favorites, but they are all wonderful. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed!

5 comments about Irwin Toys: The Canadian Star Wars Connection.
- I just got a copy of this book, and since it hasn't been reviewed in a while, I thought potential buyers might appreciate another (more recent) opinion. Overall, I was quite impressed with the CONTENT of this book. It does a very nice job covering vintage Star Wars figures, vehicles, and playsets (as well as several other items) that were released in Canada from 1977 to 1985. One of the best aspects of this book is the presentation of different items (and especially the different packaging) that were released exclusively in Canada (for example, did you know that the AT-AT Commander was actually released as General Veers in Canada?). The author's commentary is largely interesting and helpful, especially the excerpts from his interview with the former head of Kenner Canada/Irwin (really provides a great behind the scenes history of Star Wars toys).
On the down side (and so you know exactly what you are getting), the production quality of this book is only fair at best. For example, the pages are printed on newsprint, and many of the photos are poor to moderate in quality. The publisher was clearly trying to save money, but I still commend them for publishing such an eclectic/niche book in the first place.
In sum, I give the production quality two stars, and the content five stars (since the latter is far more important, I rounded up to four stars overall). I think this book is definitely worth getting (especially if the price is right), as it contains some interesting and valuable information that is not available elsewhere. Thus, I'll bet even the most experienced collectors will see several vintage Star Wars items that they have never seen or heard of before.
- This is the kind of in-depth thorough Star Wars collecting book that many in the hobby are craving. The author isn't scared to take on an esoteric, yet fascinating slice of Star Wars collectibles (namely the Canadian Star Wars toy line) and cover everything about it in detail, from common items, to variations, to hard-to-find rarities. Some of the rarest pieces pictured in this book appear nowhere else in print.
This is not the book for the beginning Star Wars collector, however I do not know a single longtime Star Wars collector who does not own this resource. The photography could be a little better, but still captures all the essentials.
- I finished reading through James' book this weekend, and I am very impressed with it. The information is displayed in an easy to follow manner, and it works great as a resource guide. It definitely belongs among the reference materials of any vintage Star Wars collector. As a Kenner collector, I also found the book to be full of history about the company. This was a pleasant, and educational surprise.

- Attention collectors: There is finally a book which focuses only on the vintage Star Wars line released in Canada. There are many rare and highly sought after toys which came out only in Canada. This book successfully organizes and pictures these Canadian Star Wars toys in order to inform the serious Star Wars collector about these rare and often elusive items. There are hundreds of pictures and a lot of useful information. I would recommend this book to any serious Star Wars collector.
- A very informative book which focuses only on Canadian Star Wars Toys. The amount of information and pictures contained relating only to toys released in Canada is staggering. It was not until this point that anyone had attempted to list and document all these rare Star Wars toys that the average collector would have never even had a chance to hear about, much less view. I would recommend this book to any avid Star Wars collector.

3 comments about Warman's Lionel Train Field Guide: Values And Identification (Warman's Field Guides Lionel Train 1945-1969: Values & Identificatio).
- When I first received this book I almost sent it back..its so small. I'm now glad I didn't, It's the book I look at most often. I also take it everywhere I go, It almost fits in your pocket
- Quite useful for a quick check. Very useful for on line auctions to see if more investigation needed.
- This guide has everything in it that a collector of Lionel's postwar trains might desire - descriptions, values and best of all color PHOTOS! Though not as detailed as the Standard Catalog of Lionel trains upon which it is based, it non the less includes locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, accessories, sets and catalogs - it even lists Lionel HO production.
Though format is a bit different, but can be slid into my pockets - though admittedly I would have prefered the book have fewer, but taller pages. However, the color photos of so many items - there are hundreds of them - give this volume a definate edge over any of the other guides I have used over the past 25 years.
This book definately rates as a "must-have" for the postwar Lionel collector.
