1 comments about Dolls and Accessories, 1910-1930 (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I own the 2 previous books written by this author, (on the subject of "DOLLS AND ACCESSORIES"). Well, the 2 previous books by Zillner were much more complete. I would, thus, rate this "Volume 3" lower than the previous Zillner volumes on this subject.

WHY? ... because when the author tried to tackle the doll Eras "from 1910-1930", I think she bit off more than she could chew.

In my opinion she should have broken down the doll Era (ie: 1910-1930) in two parts and thus added more information. Either that, or she could have made this "Volume 3" more complete. The doll Era from 1910-1930 simply needed more coverage than attempted by Zillner.

Zillner has a great writing style. Her photos are always wonderful. So my only complaint , as stated above, is that Zillner just needed to make this book a bit longer and she should have included more dolls and especially more accessories from this doll Era.

1 comments about Collectible Snowdomes (Collectibles).

  1. Another one of those books that feature items, which if seen individually, would not be too interesting but put 350 of them in a neat square, well printed, all color book and they come alive. Each dome has a page to itself with a caption. Most of the objects inside the domes seem pretty tacky to me, produced as they are for the downmarket tourist trade but near the end of the book there are several advertising domes that look as if their contents have had some thought given to them, M&Ms and the Golden Arches of McDonalds look pretty cool surrounded by snow. The back of the book has a bibliography, web sites (naturally) and index.

Books about snowdomes are pretty sparse, only three are listed in the bibliography, the one I have is 'Snowdomes' by Nancy McMichael, this has a better history than the Carnot book and a more flamboyant presentation and it has a picture of a larger-than-life dome on the front cover whose globe area is actually plastic with a liquid and white flakes inside, it must have been a bookbinder's nightmare to produce.

Flammarion, the French publishers of Snowdomes also have other books in their Collectible series, I have one on wristwatches and another on pocket knives and as they are all the same square shape they do look good on a bookshelf. All I need now are Collectible books on jukeboxes, QSL cards, model Greyhound buses, pin-up playing cards, Santa Claus, TV station test cards and anything to do with the 1939 New York World's Fair!

5 comments about Arcade Treasures With Price Guide: With Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Book was filled with pictures of games I played as a kid. Lots of great pics and wonderful content. Price guide is not a reason to buy this book. But if you want to find a game from a long time ago this is it.

  2. If you're interested in video arcade games from the 80s, this book will disappoint you. The content is VERY pinball-centric, with only passing mentions of arcade cabinets here and there.

    Not what I expected.

  3. The market is a big determiner of what these games go for. The minute this book hit the stands it was out of date. Bill Kurtz fails to touch the pulse of collectors in this guide as it appears to be more ego gratification than a viable resource. And he considers himself in the business?...

  4. I wasn't planning on buying this book due to the price. Boy, was I glad I did! Tons of pictures and information. I'm already trying to hunt down one of my all time favorite arcade games; Wrestlefest (Not mentioned or pictured in the book, but I was inspired.)

2 comments about Collecting Antique Marbles: Identification & Price Guide.

  1. As the wife of a train collector, I found this book very familiar territory -- but even better. Baumann's grasp of history, archeology, industrial technique and the esthetic of marble art is wonderful. This was a great read (and look--the color plates are a real asset), as well as an excellent reference.

  2. 176 pages with 1,200 color pictures and many black and white plates. This book really provides a comprehensive history of marbles including how to classify and collect them. Details on clay and crockery, china, swirls, solids, opaques and sulphides. Transition and machine-mades, reproductions and toys are discussed. A comprehensive price guide is included, and a marble club listing. Add this book to your collection if you're a new marble collector or a long time collector. A great reference source.

2 comments about Collecting Disneyana: Identification & Value Guide (Identification & Values (Collector Books)).

  1. Let me start right off by saying that "Collecting Disneyana" is by no means a definitive guide on the hobby. Such a book, in one existed, would have to be beyond massive. There has been so much Disney merchandise produced over the past 80 plus years that it would be an impossible feat to catalog it all. Disney was a company who was at the forefront of marketing its characters and as such, there is simply a voluminous amount of material out there. What the book does do very effectively is give a sampling of Disneyana from the past eight decades although its main thrust is with the Golden Age of Disney from the 1930's.

Geared towards the novice or intermediate collector, even long time fans and collectors will find a lot to enjoy in the book, beginning with the hundreds of brilliant, full color photos of rare Disney collectibles. In today's era where things tend to be overly merchandised, you get a good idea of just how popular Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and the rest of the characters were back in the 30's. Their images could be seen everywhere...toys, books, salt & pepper shakers, figurines, radios, even on packaging for Noma Christmas lights.

The first 115 pages of the 240 page book are dedicated to these early years. Now this not a typical price guide listing. This isn't about long pages of tiny, hard to read text. There are typically three to five pictures per page and pricing information is provided for each item shown. These include the manufacturer and year (if known) and the value range. The items are enough to make the most seasoned collector drool...there's a Lionel Circus Train, a Mickey bandleader doll by Knickerbocker, a Disney windup balloon vendor toy, and some of the earliest Mickey Mouse watches.

The next chapter deals with characters other than the usual suspects. These include items that bare the image of Oswald the Rabbit, Ferdinand the Bull, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and others.

The final two chapters cover the television years of the 40's through the 60's and a look at modern Disney collectibles. Perhaps the most valuable part of the book, at least for new collectors, is the collector's guide, which contains valuable information about buying, selling, and collecting Disneyana. There's great stuff about how best to store your items, buying on the Internet, and more.

  2. David Longest's COLLECTING DISNEYANA: IDENTIFICATION & VALUE GUIDE will prove an exciting, popular pick for any library catering to Disney collectors. Color photos pack a survey of early to later Disney items, from films and books to figurines, packing in notes on collectible items and their prices.

1 comments about Collecting Golliwoggs: Teddy Bear's Best Friends (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I bought this book for my wife, who makes Gollies in all sizes, and she was astounded to see the huge variety of them that have been produced throughout the ages since they were first introduced. For anyone who wants to collect ideas for making some, she recommends this book as perhaps the most comprehensive collection of golliewoggs there is.

5 comments about Barbie and Her Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod, World of Fashion.

  1. This book is as close to being perfect as any can get in the Barbie world. Not only is it informative and well-written, it's fun too!

Each outfit is explained in detail, with each part listed, along with what parts may be more difficult to find, any variations in the outfit, etc. All of these items, where possible, are photographed flat and clearly so you can see each item separately and know what each thing is. Then, another photograph is taken on the doll, in a fun setting that usually goes with the name of the outfit somehow, so you can actually see how the outfit looks on a doll, something which I think is really important.

The photographs are great pretty much right across the board. The book is well-written, with a great sense of humour. All in all, you can't go wrong if you're into Mod-era Barbie and buy this book!

  2. This is a fabulous book! Wonderful and informative descriptions. The photographs are some of the cutest and most creative I have ever seen. Lovely. I highly reccomend this book!

  3. Everything you could want to know about this period of Barbie and the photographs are beautiful.

  4. This is the best and most comprehensive book on barbie fashions of the mod era. It shows you what the fashions look like nrfb as well as loose. It is a must have for any barbie collector.

  5. It tells you so very much about the mod world of Barbie. It gives you so much to sink your teeth into that I couldn't put it down for about an hour or longer.
