5 comments about Flea Market Fidos: The Dish on Dog Junk and Canine Collectibles.

  1. Such a fun and witty little treasure. If you love dog collectibles and vintage treats, this is the book for
you. I received it as a gift, and have been giving it
as a gift to all of my fido friends ever since.

  2. This book explored the 'types' of canine collectibles one might find in the marketplace, but it didn't address the 'value' of these collectibles, which would have been much more insightful. The content was purely fluff with little substance to offer a true collector.

  3. I just purchased this magical book. I couldn't put it down. The photos were amazing and the writing was so clever and unique. Each page brought a new smile and warm feeling. I am going to order one for each of my friends and family. I can't think of a nicer gift to send someone than this special book. In my home, it's my other "best friend ".

  4. Dog junk and canine collectibles haven't received their own collectibles guidebook before: enter Flea Market Fidos, a unique guide to canine collectibles which covers everything from dog drawings, to crafts and stuffed animals. Besides history and values, Flea Market Fidos also covers the best shops, flea markets, and web sites for locating canine valuables.

  5. What an adorable book! I received it as a gift yesterday and I just couldn't put it down. The photos are great, the writing is comical and its a real feel-good book!

2 comments about Standard Catalog Of Die-Cast Vehicles: Identification And Values, Revised Edition (Standard Catalog of Die-Cast Vehicles).

  1. First of all, I HATE the BIG UGLY picture of American Car Racer...do not know his name, on the cover of the book. Second, I hate NASCAR and Cheap political HOT WHEEL junk I do not even care for looking at. The book should focus on HIGH QUALITY COLLECTIBLE BRANDS ONLY. What a waste of paper~!!!

  2. this hefty tome covers the lower end of the market with nothing much for the serious collector of quality models.

4 comments about A Treasury of Scottie Dog Collectibles: Identification & Values (Treasury of Scottie Dog Collectibles).

  1. Brand new, year 2001, 192 page volume is the 3rd in the series. It features 192 pages with every page loaded with large, sharp, full color photos. There's a nice introduction to the topic. A variety of Scottie collectibles are covered ranging from banks, bookends, doorstops, planters, statues, calendars and advertisements, to greeting cards, movies, and more. If you love Scotties, you'll really enjoy this book. Add it to your library.

  2. This is a guide to the many items produced with the Scottie Dog (Scottish Terrier)image. The Scottie's heyday was in the 1930's when the registration with the AKC was at it's highest. Also in this same era, U.S. President, Franklin Roosevelt had a Scottish Terrier named Fala, who was world famous. Therefore a large amount of items were produced with the likeness of the Scottie in the past, and of course in the present as well. This book has a sampling of those items in various categories such as banks, bookends, paper products, figurines, smoking sets, tins, kitchen, etc. In fact almost anything you can think of, has at one time, probably been produced with a Scottie on it! This book also gives a dollar value to each item, usually in a range. The text is accompanied by good color photgraphs of the representative items. At the end of the book is a listing of books with Scotties, films with Scotties. The cover is an attractive plaid with photographs of various Scottie items. There has long been a large cult of Scottie collectors, finally there is a guide! One drawback however, is the noticeable increase in price for Scottie items since this book was published as more antique dealers now realize they can command higher prices for these items. Readers should also be advised that there is now a volume 2 in this series.

  3. This book contains beautiful pictures of various Scottie Dog collectibles, some with manufacturers listed and all with values. I can not say enough wonderful things about this book. Anybody who is into dog collectibles must have this book. Anxiously awaiting the next edition! The only change I would suggest in future editions is to give more educational information about the manufacturers. Order this book, you will not be disappointed!

  4. If you are a scottie lover then this is the book for you! Even though this book isn't published yet I know the care and thought that went into this book. The author is a wonderful person to know and a true lover of scotties. This is a most have book for scottie collectors. It would be money well spent on your part.

1 comments about Rubber Toy Vehicles: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. While not a toy collector, I was interested in refreshing my memory in search of toys from my youth. This book certainly was a blast from the past and an enjoyable read/flip through. Undoubtedly Leopard is the expert on the subject. There were some fantastic ancient photographs of the toys actually being made, as well as some super original advertisements. The brief history of the companies was interesting and useful, though centered more on Auburn, but that is probably the company most collectors will be interested in. I've had trouble in more exact dating of these toys, and while the book did have some pieces dated, and did offer an overview of dating of rubber toys (Auburn in particular), I wish there had been more. The book is about rubber toys, which were phased out in the 1950's. In auctions I find that dealers mingle the words rubber and plastic freely, so I would have liked to have seen a few plastic Auburn toys just to help with the dating. Never-the-less, it is ground breaking and the best book that I have found on the subject. I would love to see another book by the author take up where the rubber toys left off.

2 comments about Remembering Revell Model Kits (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. On coffee table books such as this I usually borrow a copy from my local library before I lay down 30-plus dollars at my high street stockist (hobby shop, Yank). It's a good thing that I followed my usual pattern with "Remembering Revell..." since the book covers only US-based operations during the period 1952-1979. Revell's sizeable, more profitable and argueably more interesting UK, West German, Mexican (Lodela) and Japanese design and manufaturing operations are virtually ignored. The UK shop does get some ink but it is primarily spent criticizing the British tool and die makers. To be accurate the book should have been titled something like "US Revell Models 1952-1979".
The author has given the reader a well organized, smoothly written and beautifully illustrated book, albeit, one of limited scope. The text's limitation goes beyond the time and geography. The end of Revell as an independent, closely-held firm is dismissively summarized in less than half a page. All that the reader is told is that "costs rose" and "Profit margins had always been slim",...oh. What does that mean? If margins had always been minimal how had Revell survived, no, prospered as the world's largest model manufacturer? The author does tell the reader about changing liesure time options for US children and teenage boys, Revell's traditional market, that cut into US sales but nothing else. The effects of Revell's always more proftable foreign operations and the emergence of fine scale modeling as an adult hobby in the US go undicussed as do the oil shocks of 1973-74 and 1979 as they effected the cost of Revell's raw materials. Similiarly, the place of Revell in the stagnant N. American and W. European econonies of the late 1970's is ignored. This is not a tome aimed at MBA's but I'd like the full story about why my favorite boyhood model company folded. I suspect it is rapped up in the early death of the founder and the presence of a fuzzy undefined corporated hierarchy with ill-defined authority, responsiblity and accountablity.
Additionally, be advised that the introduction and much of the first chapter are lifted from this same author's earlier book about Aurora models.

  2. This book takes a look at the history of Revell in its heyday of the 1950s to the 1970s. The book looks at the development of everything from the kit itself to the artists who drew the box tops which drove me nuts because I could never even come close to making the model like what was on the box top.

I was born in the 70s when Revell was starting to go through the turmoil that consolidated the plastic model industry so all this history is new to me. This book makes me want to go back in time and build most of these kits with only my trusty tube of glue as and a powerful exhaust fan as my companions.

Although I generally build the Tamigawa kits when I get the chance, I still have many happy memories of building assembled models from Revell even though they were poorly painted and badly built (fault of the builder, not the company.)

My only quibble is I wished the author would have spent more detail in describing how a kit goes from idea to market.

If you are a modeller who enjoyed building the planes, vehicles and ships of Revell, you will find this an enjoyable history into the company that helped millions (including me) find things to do on a rainy day.

1 comments about Collecting Rose O'Neill's Kewpies (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. This is a wonderful book filled with lots of color photos of the earliest Kewpies. Since the authors are members of Rose O'Neil's family, they concentrate on the Kewpie figures, dolls, and dishes that were made under the supervision of Rose herself. If you are a Kewpie fan, this book is for you. The prices given are for 2003.

2 comments about Aurora Slot Cars (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. This book delivers exactly what it promised. It could have a little bit more information since it was similar to a reproduction with updates of a book from the 70s.

  2. I use to buy all the Graham's books and I'm always very satisfied. Great pictures, many interesting details about the firm and the models,so I can state that he is the best writer of models book and this book too desereve great interest from ani model collector.
