  1. This is an absolutely wonderful book. Martha Steward presents us with "Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts: Basic Techniques for Sewing, Applique, Embroidery, Quilting, Dyeing and Printing, plus 150 Inspired Projects From A to Z," a book jammed pack full of great ideas and projects. You'll be making a shopping list and heading out to the craft and fabric stores before the day in done.

Martha Stewart shows just how easy it is to create a variety of beautiful gathers, flourishes; often seen on clothing, draperies, pillows, etc. Learn how to make beautiful curtains with designs you painted or printed on the fabric yourself.

After decades of not sewing I recently bought a sewing machine. I've been inspired to only do more sewing but how to do it better and am filled with idea on how to make even a store bought dress pattern more of my own. I'm working on a lovely cloth covered bulletin board with ribbons to hold envelopes and photos in place and a few large pockets to hang by my desk to help reduce the clutter around my computer as well as brighten the space.

Many projects that may have intimidated me in the past actually seem like a piece of cake now that I've seen the step by step instructions. I want to try Batik and other techniques to create a Batik like effect on fabrics used to create clothing, draperies, bedspreads, table clothes, wall hangings, you name it.

This is a must have book for anyone who loves to create a living space and wardrobe that is truly theirs.

  2. "The aim of all of us at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is to inspire and to teach."

That aim has been fully realized in this ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SEWING AND FABRIC CRAFTS. The teaching focuses mostly on basics for beginning crafters -- step-by-step instructions, easy techniques, even some no-sew projects (e.g. coasters, storage boxes) and some that begin with commercially available products (e.g. totes, bibs, bed/bath/table linens). But for experienced crafters -- the book is pure inspiration.

Beautifully illustrated throughout, it opens with primers on sewing, embroidery, appliqué, quilting, dye and stenciling. MSL's trademark visual glossaries of fabrics (almost tactile!), threads, notions and supplies are throughout, and an index and listing of sources are included at the end. But the bulk of the book is its 250 pages of fabric projects, some of which are crafting standards, many of which include fresh options. (**Note: perhaps half of the projects require the crafter to print a pattern/template from PDFs on a CD (included); therefore, access to a computer with a CD drive, a printer, and the free, downloadable Adobe Acrobat software are required.)

I don't recall an over-the-top, un-doable project in the lot; the only sections that even approach are upholstery and window shades, yet the instructions there also seem manageable. Every project is illustrated in finished form; many also feature illustrations alongside the step-by-step instructions. I challenge anyone -- beginner, experienced, even an "armchair" crafter -- to look through this book without taking on a project :)

  3. Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts is, as the subtitle says, basic techniques. 88 pages are devoted to technique--with lots of photographs. The rest of the book is projects.

I think there is room for a lot more techniques. For instance, there is a handful of pages on quilting--even learning the basics of quilting lends itself to far more information.

The advance copy has photos in black and white (saving the publishers a fortune) but it makes the book difficult to review, as b&w in this application is basically worthless.

    Overall, not overly impressed.

  4. Let me start by saying I am reviewing a black and white copy without the CD. This is important because I have the Martha Stewar's Encyclopedia of Crafts and color is very important. Just like the magazine, the presentation is a large part of why you want the book. You really can't get the full impact without color. Without the color and CD what am I reviewing? What I can see from the black and white version. So what do you get?

What you will get is a beautiful bound copy of sewing information that is readily available on her website and in many cases in her magazines. But here is the selling point, you get all in one place, in an easy to browse and use format. Everything is here - from the directions, tools to use to additional techniques and suppliers. So the second positive is you can recycle all those magazines you have laying around gathering dust because there is one project in each magazine you know you will get to one day. You can also stop searching the web for that project you remember from some show you saw long ago on cat play toys. It's all here in the book. To me, that alone might be the best reason to buy it.

Let me warn you this is more a crafter's book than a sewing book. It is not for the serious sewer who want to turn out Chanel inspired garments and probably a little boring for the experienced sewer. So why should you buy it? It depends on what you are looking for. I found the Encyclopedia of Crafts a great way to plan projects with my granddaughters who loved looking the book at all the different projects. I'm planning to use the sewing book the same way. Seeing two little heads going throught a book and planning projects to do with Grandma, priceless.

  5. I thought to myself "Hey it's Martha Stewart" and since I love sewing and fabric crafts I wanted to grab this book

Unfortunately this would have helped more when I was a youngster.

Most of the things in the book liked

    baby bibs

    pot holders

    curtains

    pin cushions

handkerchiefs and quilts i can make without a pattern

It does say "basic techniques for sewing, applique", etc, and this is just what it is

  1. One thing I must have in any art book is visuals. The visuals should tell me most of what I need to know and the text should seal the deal. I'm an artist myself and I cannot understand why there are art books which seem to think last and least about the visuals which go into art books. I am not saying this is a bad book. If you feel like reading a lot of text and studying all white pictures demonstrating intricate sewing, this will do the job. Personally, this didn't do much for me. I have spent years painting and manipulating fabric but in a much freer style.

  2. I am sop very sorry I waited so long to pick this up. It looked dull from the picture. Recently, I was whipping up some Canadian smocking (ha - I don't whip up smocking:) I struggle the web searching for directions!)for a gown I designed, and the next evening, this was recommended to me by amazon. I broke down, and let me say I wish I bought it years ago! It is instantly inspirational for me. I visualized 10 different new designs the first browse through. And the challenge of doing some of these - I find it a relaxing as knitting. That zen-like state where you need to relax and do it for it to come out right. It is beautifully done. The reason it looks drab is because Colette Wolfe has taken thousands of yards of unbleached muslin and worked them into intricate design pieces usable for fashion, home dec or art. Awe inspiring and lit a fire under me. This isn't your basic pleating and piping book. It is the highest you can go up the ladder of fabric manipulation without the aid of beads, feathers, bells or whistles. When you see the plain muslin stand up all on its own as a work of art, you'll understand my excitement. Only criticism is when is volume II coming out? I know there is more to come!

  3. Incredible sewing ideas and execution. Would recommend to any person who can thread a needle. Now no material in my home is safe from being cut, pleated, folded, puffed, etc. Addictive.

  4. All the techniques I've been wanting to learn all in one complete source. This book is awsome. I have read the other reviews and the negitive ones I have to strongly disagree with. I don't care that the pictures aren't in color or the lack of understanding is blamed on the book and not the person's own lack of ability. If you can hold a needle and thread you can use these techniques. If it's difficult to understand then please choose a different hobby. To me it's as easy as ready a McCalls pattern.

  5. Who knew there were this many possibilities? This book gave me so many design ideas I'll never be able to sew them all!

  1. This book is an excellent buy for anyone wishing to work with digital pictures and quilting. I commend the writers and publisher. Directions/instructions are easy to read and understand. I could never figure out the difference between software products, inks, fabric to use, etc and you told us what you use and what you recommend which is what I wish other book writers would do. They tend to stay generic and I want to know what "you" use and why. One of the best books I have bought in a long time.

  1. Loved this book. So full of useful information and other stuff you think you may not use but is good to know. I also loved the patterns in the book. In fact, I fell in love with the green cardigan and am now in the process of making it. The instructions are clear. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys knitting.

  2. I actually gave this as a gift. But skimming through it, i felt it was very complete.

  3. This is a must-have book for anyone who works with wool - spinning and knitting especially. The front of the book talks about the basic structure of wool - a textile lesson. The second part has a directory of different types of sheep and their uses, and the third part has patterns.

This is a great book if you are a handspinner, because it talks extensively about the different uses of different types of wool. Never pick the wrong fiber for your project again. Know the perfect wool, every time.

  4. I have a large collection of knitting books - both pattern and technique. I LOVE this book, and have learned SO MUCH about the different attributes of various wool breeds and the results that can and do impact the yarns, and hence the knitted products. Even looking at the drawings of the various breeds - it is sometimes difficult to believe they are all sheep.

In addition to the great education about wool, which has already helped me in making better choices for projects, there are some wonderful classic patterns I am enjoying.

A great addition to your knitting or fiber library!

  5. I won't look at a skein of wool in the same old way ever again! If you want to ramp up your knitting and your knowlege of wool, this is the book. The author's appreciation and love for wool fiber is contagious. The included patterns are beautiful and I plan to knit several. I will never own sheep and I am not a spinner, but I appreciate the process that gets the finished skeins into my hands; I have a better understanding thanks to this marvelous book.

  1. All kinds of fun and creative ways to break into dyeing are presented in this amazingly comprehensive and easy to read book. I love the logical layout of the book as it has chapters on equipment (readily available in most homes), fibers, types of dye, colors, huge section of techniques (my favorite section) and some lovely patterns for small items on which to practice. I would say the focus is on dyeing animal fibers and yarn, especially wool although others are discussed as well. Numerous full color pictures throughout reinforce the directions and text. The book has a nice enclosed spiral binding so it lays flat and the text, headings, highlights are printed in such a readable font with nice contrast to the background--so eye friendly! Most importantly, the author encourages fearless creativity and very practical, hands-on methods with readily available supplies. A novice would feel comfortable getting started, but I also think there is much to be explored by a more experienced person. I can't wait to dive in!

  2. I have been dyeing yarn and fiber for a few years and have many books about dyeing. I just received this book and was VERY surprised! It have become my favorite dyeing book. The book has excellent step-by-step directions for many methods of dyeing. The photography is great. There is a small section on color theory that is excellent. The spiral binding allows the book to be open flat allowing you to refer to the directions as you are dyeing. I have never reviewed a book before, but had to make a review for this one. If you can only buy one book about dyeing, buy this book!

  3. I have been curious about dyeing yarn in the past. Since I picked up this book, I am now dying to try it! The colors and pictures are absolutely beautiful and make me want to start right NOW. It's one of those books that you loose time looking and rereading through it...it draws you in and you just want to keep turning the pages. And when people are visiting and they see the book, THEY have to look through it too! I did not anticipate it also being a great coffee table book. I couldn't be happier.

  4. Gail's book is a treasure and is written for the timid adventurer. It inspired me to try my own hand at something that has seemed so technical and picky. She writes in a very matter of fact way, taking into account all of our fears and talks more about the wonders of the process than about achieving some specific end. She makes the journey into color and all the joy that can bring into something magical and fun.

  5. I bought this book out of curiousity and absolutely loved it. The ideas were easy and fun to do and I continue to enjoy it very much. I was so impressed with the material that I bought a copy for a friend of mine who's an artist as well as a knitting teacher. I am certain it will make a wonderful addition to her knitting library. Thanks Ms. Callahan for this wonderful work!

  1. I first requested this book from my library to see if I liked it, and I immediately ordered it! I love the projects. Even though there is not a "pattern" for every project, you can enlarge a photo in the book on a copier and using a transfer pencil and tracing paper. The stitching instructions are nicely done as well, including actual photos of the stitches, instead of illustrations. Enjoy!

  2. I bought this book over the Christmas holidays because I have always liked the look of embroidery and I thought the designs were really cute. I am no crafter, I don't know how to sew ( though I have wielded a needle to mend things), or knit, or crochet and I had never embroidered. But I bought this book, some basic supplies (6 in hoop, embroidery needles, thread) and set to work on an old pillowcase and I taught myself all of the stitches presented in the beginning of the book in about 2 hours. The instructions were mostly quite clear and the illustrations helped, I had no problem picking it up. For my first project, I picked the stuffed felt owl, and I was able to finish it over the course of two days. I followed the directions and I had great results, and was happy that I could start and finish a small project. I was really pleased with the results, and now am feeling ambitious enough to tackle the lap quilt for a friend's baby. This is an excellent book for beginners and has really inspired me.

  3. I received this book for Christmas. It is ok at best. I was very sad, as I thought it would have transferable patterns to tear out, like the Sublime Stitching books. There weren't many projects, and they were just ok. I was really excited because of the pictures, and reviews.

  4. Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. I browsed through it and I'm sure she's going to love it. Definitely for beginners...

  5. I grew up on counted cross stitch. I loved the meditative little XXXXX patterns I made, but ARGH, what if I don't like DMC 307? Do I really have to follow the pattern? And what if the stupid pattern turns out to be WRONG?!

But oh, embroidery. How do I love thee? Let me STOP counting the ways and just stitch for the joy of stitching! Aimee Ray introduced me to free-form stitching at its best. She gave me the tools and some fun ideas, but if I don't like a split stitch or just don't feel like chain stitching today, I don't have to! The Embroidery Police (*cough* or Mom) won't come knocking down my door!

The book is full of close-up photographs of projects, so it's easy to see how she varied colors and stitches to achieve certain looks. My favorite page is 13 where she shows the same pattern (the bird on the bottom left of the front cover) done three ways to illustrate how different stitches can affect the final product.

My only criticism is that there isn't a discussion on needle size... perhaps I'll discover that I only need one type of needle, but can I really do satin and denim with the same thing? I'm dubious. That said, it's not enough for me to dock this book even half a star. Some folks have complained that the book doesn't contain the instructions/patterns for some of the cute, complete doodle projects she's done. Yes, you can get them from her [...] store, but I think including them in the book would've defeated her purpose - make your own doodles and embroider those instead!

  1. It's exactly what I needed to get started and I received it in good condition and in a short amount of time!!!

  2. I'd bought this book because of reviews I'd read on the sewing forums. It was more difficult than I thought to find the cotton clothesline than I expected, but once I found some, I haven't stopped. It's really addictive - wrapping scrap fabric around the clothesline, then sewing the coil to form baskets of differing shapes. The book is well-written, with lots of illustrations, to make it easy for sewers. Even beginning sewists can be successful - essentially you only need to be able zig-zag to construct your baskets. These baskets make really neat gifts as well - much better than "Amish Friendship Bread"!

  3. This is a beautiful book with lots of color pictures of many samples to give you many ideas. The diagrams are clear and the text is well written. Two of our local quilting groups are having fun making these. Now if Accuquilt GO would only make a cutting tool for the 3/4" strips, this would be a fairly fast technique.

  4. Caution!! this craft is very addictive, I've made more baskets, purses & bowls than even a crowd could use. There is no end to the color combo's and shapes you can make with this craft. The great part is when you start something you actually finish it!! I just love the art & will continue with it till the neighborhood asks me to move.

  5. Great product. I use it in teaching my fabric classes. Well written with easy to follow
    instructions.

  1. A beautiful book with clear step by step instructions, and wonderful projects!
    Thank you Ruth Rae!

  2. This has become one of my favorite books in my craft library. For the first time ever, I actually read an instructional sewing book cover to cover rather than just browsing the pretty photos. And then I started trying the projects.

Layered, Tattered and Stitched: A Fabric Art Workshop has 20 different projects by mixed media artist Ruth Rae. In each project she steps you through making collages using materials such as fabric, transparencies, paper, rubber stamps, paint, wire, beads, lace and metal. Her style has the elements I adore in fabric collage - frayed edges, burns, lots of stitching in messy rows, along with fabulous texture and color combinations.

She starts out with a brief 2 pages on materials, but it's enough for you to figure out what she's using and where to buy your own. She also explains how she dyes fabric or cuts certain materials. It's not in-depth, but experienced crafters and sewists will not need that level of detail.

The 20 projects include things such as cards, gift wrap, a journal, wall hangings, doll & clothes, banner, apron, wrist cuff, and a photo frame. I loved her construction techniques for the apron with buttonholes rather than ties, and her book binding techniques are next up on my list of things to try. The instructions are easy to follow, although she focuses more on the techniques, not the actual materials. She expects you to create similar projects in your own style, rather than making things exactly like hers. I love that idea. But...she does provide patterns and even a couple of pages of clip art if you want to closely emulate items as pictured in the book.

I was so inspired by this book, I have already made several of these projects in my own style and plan to make more stuff using techniques from the book.

    What I liked:

    * gorgeous photos of art quilt and fabric collage items
    * simple instructions
    * excellent techniques using various materials
    * encourages your own creativity - use the projects as a jumping off point
    * unique yet practical projects

    What was missing?:

    * doesn't discuss layout design or color theory of collage

    Other things to know:

    * sewing techniques are not covered, it is assumed you know how to use your machine already
    * If you like the style of Ruth Rae, you will love the book. But if you're not a fan of the tattered style, this may not be a good book for you.

  3. The first thing I noticed about this book was the matte pages. Unfortunately, this does not allow for a great reproduction of colors in the photographs. So, as a source of inspiration it is lacking for me. I wasn't excited about the photography.

The projects are very fully explained with stepped out directions so if you're a beginner, interested in working in fabric collage and need a step-by-step I think you'll find this book helpful. There were a few projects that appealed and I may find myself jumping in to try one or two, but as a source of inspiration beyond the projects Ms Rae presents? This will not be a go-to book for me.

  4. Layered, Tattered & Stitched by Ruth Rae is perfect for both the beginner and advanced textile artist. The book itself is put together beautifully, balancing the technical with the aesthetic. With over eighteen projects, Rae guides the reader with clear instructions and photographs to not only complete the projects presented, but to learn new skills and artistry to incorporate into their own artwork. The author generously shares a variety of techniques with the reader, drawing upon her experience in not only fabric, but mixed media and jewelry design. Additional tips and wisdom are sprinkled throughout the book to include safety guidelines when using certain materials, effects and products as well as a thorough list of specific tools and supplies which are needed to complete the projects. Rae also gives insight into breathing new life into the artist's existing cache and methods of up-cycling substrates into new art. Layered, Tattered & Stitched is a must have for anyone who would like to or currently works in the mixed media and fiber arts.

  5. Wow, this book is filled with wonderful ideas, tips, and techniques no matter what your skill level is. I've been sewing small projects in this "tattered" style for the last few years, but I still found this book amazing, inspiring, and a pleasure to read. For those of you who really like "how to" books, Ruth has some great instructions for acheiving your own inspiring projects. And for those of you who are visual junkies, you won't be disappointed with the lovely photographs and imagery. I've continued to look at this book on almost a daily basis, because it is just beautiful...A++ Money well spent in a market that is flooded with sub-par art books, this is a gem. Thanks Ruth Rae! love it-amanda

  1. be as talented as Amy Butler. I checked "In Stitches" out from the library and am now very interested in purchasing my own copy. Her use of fabrics - both patterns & colors - is awesome. I even want to try making the apron in the book! Amy makes sewing fun and interesting again.

  2. I love this book! "In Stitches" is one sewing book I return to over and over. Plus, the book looks so pretty sitting on my coffee table! There are tutorials in this book for throw pillows, quilts, placemats, an apron, lounge pants, sleeping mask, bathrobe, a few bags, some organizers, and more. There are several items that make perfect gifts and I return to this book over and over for that purpose! I just wish I could convince myself to make ME some of the things in this book!

  3. I love this book. I have already make a bunch of stuff out of it. Directions are very clear and comprehesive. Great book to add to my sewing stash. Will use it for years to come!!

  4. I found Amy's name on the web, after searching for sewing templates. I saw her stuff and HAD to buy her book. She has some really cute and different ideas. Not too complicated and it comes with paper formats. I am new to sewing and have enjoyed doing some of her projects. It's a MUST get!!

  5. This is a beautiful book. But if I had been able to look through it first, I wouldn't have bought it; many of the projects are things I will never make (for example, a sleeping mask). I find it easier to buy the individual Amy Butler patterns for the things I really want to make.

5 comments about Kanzashi in Bloom: 20 Simple Fold-and-Sew Projects to Wear and Give.

  1. I was so excited when I received this book, Having never attempted these techniques I was initially worried it would be too complicated. Me and my nine year old daughter have been making flower after flower, enjoying some time together and following the easy clear cut directions. The instructions were so easy, she didn't even need my help! We have made a few of the projects and all the petal designs. Now we are having fun creating new looks with different embellishments for the flower centers.

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning beginning Kanzashi!! Just eb careful.... it's addictive! :D

  2. I was hoping to learn more varity of flower making and traditional Kanzashi. But the title is consistant with the content of this book. There are a few cute items to make some are not practical.

  3. When I ordered this book I thought it would have instructions for traditional Kanzashi. Unfortunately the folds are not traditional, most of them are mock Kanzashi folds and 1 of them is a fold that a student in the authors class accidentally invented. That aside, the projects were very nice and fun. Before starting a project you can see the difficulty level, supplies needed and size of fabric squares.

  4. I bought this book because I was interested in kanzashi after seeing so many beautiful flowers a a website called kanzahi core. Don't get me wrong, the book is a good step by step guide for 2 or 3 basic petals and flowers. I was looking for instruction on creating different flower types like the chrysanthemum, wisteria, iris, kusudama etc.

The main flower creating parts of the book is very small (only about 20 or so pages of actual flower creation). From page 39 to the end of the book (141) is all about applying the kanzashi to belts or bags, brooches, and other items.

I can think of a million ways to put a kanzashi somewhere without a book! Gimme some more flower varieties!

  5. I would rate this review higher, if I would have had a chance to get started on making these flowers. However, I have not yet had an opportunity to do anything more than glance through the book. The instructions are clear, with detailed photographs so you can see how each step is done. I am anxious to start making these great little flowers soon. I love making things for friends and family and I am certain, once I get going, I will LOVE this new craft.

I am excited to start decorating my handbags and other items.
