1 comments about Education Of A University President.
- The book's author is Marvin Wachman. Not James Hilty, who wrote the extremely sensitive, erudite and felicitous foreword.
Wachman's life story is fascinating, particularly for those of us who shared a portion of that life. Like the man, the book is ego-less and straight-forward. That is not to suggest that he hides his achievements; he just doesn't crow about them.
Of special interest to this reader is the account of his early life. His life as a child in Milwaukee built the intellectual and moral base that guided him as he made tough decisions in later life.
This account of an interesting and contributing life should be especially of interest to those who are interested in academe-its substance and its structure.

1 comments about Henry's Daughter: My Journeys Through the 20th Century.
- Mildred Norman has written a very informative and entertaining book about the mid-20th century. As baby boomer whose parents lived through this amazing period I found the book full of new insights. Norman's optimistic outlook, humbleness, and sense of humor give the book a personality not usually found in such memoirs. I highly recommend this book for those who want to get a sense of the Great Depression, WWII and the post war period. Definitely not a history oriented book -- just a great read.

2 comments about A Will of Her Own: Sarah Towles Reed and the Pursuit of Democracy in Southern Public Education.
- I just devoured every delicious word of this book. Sarah Towles Reed was an amazing woman and this is an amazing book. Parr skillfully tells the story of Reed's life long work --45 years as a classroom teacher, almost 70 years as a local union activist and nearly 50 years lobbying the state legislature. The spirit and spunk of Reed jumps from the pages. This book is a must read for anyone interested in 20th century teachers, union activists, feminists or history in general. Thank you Leslie Parr for paying tribute to this fine woman with this page turning biography!
- The woman this book centers around was probably a very interesting person, but the author just failed to capture her spirit and energy; it is loaded down with lengthy academic passages and enless scholarly rambling--this must have been Leslie Parr's PHd thesis before she turned it into a book. Boring and way too wordy.

1 comments about Forget the Novocaine, Doc - - I was a Teacher.
- Bob Calimeri taught biology and mathematics for 33 years in the Auburn school distrct. He coached football, track and cross-country for 22 years. His cross-country teams won two New York State championships.
He has taught part-time at Auburn Correctional Facility and is an adjunct profeeor at Cayuga Community College. He currently teaches part-time at Tyburn Academy, a small private school in Auburn.
He earned a two year degree from Auburn Community College and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from SUNY, Albany.
He and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 40 years. They have two grown children, Susan and Christopher.
The book was written as 44 vignettes and anecdotes gleaned from the author's many humorous moments and experiences.
1. The pursuit of teaching credentials - those carefree college days in which the main goal was to receive money from home in order to be able to go out on week-ends and relieve the stress from the academic grind.
2. Personal experiences that are not directly related to education, but which helped to shape an insight into human behavior and the absurdity of it all.
3. High school days - those days as a student-athlete which helped to demonstrate that the more things change, the more they remain the same.
4. Teaching days -- the humorous moments provided by the students, the true protagonists in the daily theatrical performances called American education.
5. Coaching days -- the fun and foibles of coaching.

1 comments about Some Forever, All for Better.
- Intended for limited circulation among family and friends, David Waters' autobiographical essays are, nonetheless, well worth reading, even if you've never met the man. For one thing, the short essays give a model of how one might go about writing one's own memoirs. For another, David Waters has been places and done things that are interesting in themselves and, here, well-described.
