2 comments about Paul Robert Hanna: A Life of Expanding Communities.
- I am a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and stumbled upon Paul Robert Hanna when reading his Clients' Report about his Wright-designed Hanna House. Wanting to know more about Hanna, I discovered Jared Stallones book on amazon. Being a teacher, I was particularly interested to read about Hanna's life and works. To that end I was not disappointed; Stallones supplies much information and detail. However, reading his book felt like reading a thesis or dissertation. Stallones writing style is dry; he does not paint pictures or tell compelling stories. The book would have been improved with some photographs of Hanna and Jean, his wife. I rate this book a 5 for information about Hanna and a 3 for the writing style.
- Stallones, as always, produced a winner. Great stuff.

2 comments about Quest for Antarctica: A Journey of Wonder and Discovery.
- What a wonderful book, I couldn't put it down. It is a masterful
combination of Antarctic History, the story of icebreakers and life
on the ice and a family tale. The snippets of history are a great
addition, It demonstrates a lot of research on the Antarctic.
Ross Hatch, Captain USN (ret)
Operations Officer USS GLACIER (AGB-4) 1959-1961
Fellow of The Explorers Club
- This is a moving account of one man's journey -- both literal and figurative -- a journey of exploration of the earth's last frontier to fulfill a boyhood dream and discovering truths of a secretive continent as well as uncovering surprising revelations about his roots and finding out who the true heroes are in life.
From the shock of a bad Navy report ("marginal imagination") to his subsequent leaps of imagination connecting the dots of his life's stations and his own most influential teachers, Barell reveals through experience, poetry and science his path from youthful dreamer through the frozen icepack of inner turmoil to becoming the inspired education professor urging teachers to take their own leaps of imagination in mentoring and nurturing inquisitive minds.
This is a deeply personal memoir which brings the reader in to a cozy wardroom to hear Navy and family stories, confront memories as turbulent as the seas on the way to Antarctica, overcome obstacles, learn from them and forge a hard-won way of fulfillment.
In full disclosure, I am the author's younger sister mentioned in this very personal account. I am so proud of his conquering the mysteries of Little America to establish his own base, creating a path of inquiry which encourages others to follow their own quests and discover their own Little America community. -- Robin Beck

1 comments about The Memoir of Marco Parenti: A Life in Medici Florence.
- This doesn't actually have the actual ricordi of Marco Parenti, the son-in-law of Alessandra Strozzi and a diplomat and merchant of Renaissance Florence, which would have been great, but it IS an excellent resource for learning about how one part of Florentine society worked. There are chapters here about his early life, education, and what Florentine politics were like at the middle of the 15th century. Along the way we learn about the Strozzi, the Medici, and a host of other families. We also learn what exile was like, and how letter-writing worked in a world without a post office (also some fun stuff about ciphers). While I definitely wish it included a straight translation of Parenti's personal logbook, this is a tremendous resource. Don't miss it if you're studying the Medicean period at all.

1 comments about My Many Selves: The Quest for a Plausible Harmony.
- My Many Selves: The Quest for a Plausible Harmony is the autobiography of author Wayne C. Booth, modern literary critic and English scholar, and author of numerous required reading college classroom texts including "The Rhetoric of Fiction", "Essays and Ironies for a Credulous Age", "Critical Understanding" and many more. My Many Selves lives up to its title in its in-depth examination of Booth's numerous personal aspects; in writing his autobiography, he sought to bring harmony to the distinctive and at times oppositional parts of his own identity, as well as resolve conflicts in his own thoughts and beliefs. His life story begins with his youth in rural Utah, a background he values highly; throughout his life he identified himself as Mormon, even though he renounced many Latter-day Saint doctrines. His lifelong concerns with ethics and rhetoric were shaped from years of observation and study. Chapters narrating phases of his life include "Ambition vs. Teaching for the Love of It", "A Wandering Generalist Longs to Be a True Scholar", "The Man of Peace Tries to Tame the Slugger", and much more. Wayne C. Booth passed away in 2005, only a number of months after completing My Many Selves; his life's wisdom from multiple perspectives is preserved between the covers. Highly recommended.
