1 comments about The Fox In the Cupboard: A Memoir.

  1. As an American horse-mad child I consumed all the Pullein-Thompson and "Jill" pony books I could get my hands on, but the culture of riding to hounds, with its arcane language and fastidious customs, remained opaque and perplexing. Jane Shilling is an outsider herself, bringing the reader along on her journey as a middle-aged single mother attempting to learn to ride and join a hunt. While the politics of hox hunting cannot be avoided, Shilling wisely does not make them the center of her story, but rather lays out the situation as she observes it and ultimately lets the reader decide for herself.

2 comments about Jim Bunning (Baseball In America).

  1. My name is Chad, and I'm a Philadelphia Phillies' fan. Yes, that's correct. I'm the one.

Having followed the Phillies my entire life, I was already a fairly big Jim Bunning fan. So, I went into reading this book slightly biased. Unfortunately, the book leaves a bit to be desired as far as a biography goes. I would say it's more of a baseball memoir.

There was very little about his private life, and his childhood and early life was practically skipped. However, the professional baseball chapters were, by far, the best. Bunning has an incredible knowledge of the game of baseball, and he was one of the smartest pitchers in the history of baseball. His hard work ethic could not be matched, and he truly did a lot for the game.

His pitching days are nicely summed up in the book. I was captivated by his recounting of the perfect game against the New York Mets. In all of the baseball chapters, the detail was phenominal. I could almost feel myself being at the game in person. The personal stories (i.e. - Ted Williams' 3 strikeouts)were nicely mixed in.

His minor league managerial career is also nicely documented, and I liked getting a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in a professional baseball organization. I was amazed at the amount of politics involved in the front office.

I realize that the chapters on his politcal career had to be included, but they seemed a little long winded. There also seemed to be too much of a do-or-die situation involved every single time he ran for office. It was made out to be more dramatic than it probably was. In all honesty, the end of the book (the politics) got quite dry and I had some trouble staying completely interested like I was with the exciting baseball sections.

Overall, Jim Bunning's book is a pretty decent read. The flow for the first 3-quarters of the book is really smooth, and fairly exciting. The personal stories peppered throughout the book keeps you wanting to read on. It is a must for any fan of the game of baseball.

  2. Perhaps my view can be attributed to the inherent skepticism of being a Philadelphia sports fan, but the tone of this book rings more like a political endorsement than biography. It's very thin on Bunning's early life, devotes very little space to his time with the Pirates and Dodgers, and spends an inordinate amount of time on the campaign trail. About the only time I got a sense of the real Jim Bunning was in the chapters devoted to his minor league managing career. As the Phutile Phillies were apt to do during Bunning's career, Dolson doesn't get enough run support and does an admirable job with very thin material.

2 comments about Tales from the Kentucky Hardwood.

  1. I got this for my dad on his birthday in October and he recently finished it and told me how much he enjoyed reading it, SOOO, I can conclude it makes a nice gift for a Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan. (Although `fanatic' better describes my dad every March.) The stories in Tales from the Kentucky Hardwood ranged from thrilling recountings of games where microseconds counted, to tales of the colorful coaches, Adolph Rupp to Tubby Smith, who led the Wildcats to so many successful seasons down thru the years. This is a well-written, respectful trip into the distant and not so distant past of one of the most storied athletic programs in the NCAA, and what makes it so special and separates it from the dry, praising look back it could have been is the extent to which players, staff and coaches from a half-century of teams stepped forward to lend their support in the creation of this book. Their input was invaluable and went a long way toward elevating Tales to a work of cultural importance in a region where basketball outranks perhaps even horse racing as the state's most cherished institution.

  2. I thought this book was very good. Lots of nice, short stories of UK basketball (players, coaches, etc.). A great read for any UK fan.

5 comments about Peyton Manning: Passing The Record.

  1. 2004 was a season with a great deal of memories for Colt fans, and this little book is a fitting tribute to their season. It's a detailed account of the Colts season. Each game is described in detail with a couple of pages of summary and two or three pages of statistics. This is combined with a section of beautifully printed color photographs of Manning in action along with other information on Manning and the season.

The focus of the book is, of course, on breaking the Dan Marino record of 1984, a record that was expected to never be broken. This book recaps each of the touchdown passes thrown during the season.

  2. This book is great for any Colts and/or football fan. I loved reading all about this year's season. It not only focuses on Peyton Manning but the entire Colts' season. There are some great charts in it that compare Peyton's season with Dan Marino's 1984 season. Loved the picture insert! I will keep this one for years to come!

  3. Very interesting book, I enjoyed the play by play, game by game summary.

  4. I was given the book by a friend and can say it is great for anyone (not just football fans). It has a good mix of text and stats to help everyone understand what really happened during the season. This is a type of book that you can pick up in five years and further realize that Peyton Manning had a great season as well as how he has impacted his community on and off the field.

Could be a collector's item one day too!

  5. This book is a great 2004-2005 season play-by-play review of the best quarterback the NFL has known. It is complete with game stats and summaries for every game of the regular season and the playoffs.
