5 comments about Steffi Public Power Private Pain: Public Power, Private Pain (Virgin).
- This book was not only boring but horribly written also
- Being the craziest fan of Steffi, I was really thrilled to get a book on her. Reading it was a pleasure and brought back a lot of memories where I cried when she lost and I jumped with joy when she won. As far as her tennis carrier is concerned I can remember every bit of her victories and this book is perfect with dates and details. It hurts to know her private life is not as fanciful and bright as the great ladies 22 grand slams are. I wish somehow I could reach out to her and make her happy. The book is well written and not biased on any angle. Her anger and dissentment towards the press could only be best understood by people who have been tortured by the media. Her anger is justified cos after all she is human and needs her breathing space away from the lights of the cameras. All I have to say is Steffi is a great inspiration not only in terms of her Tennis but also as a good daughter, good sport and a good human being. Hats of to my "Shining Star"
- I only give it three stars cause most unauthorised biographies only deserve that and even less perhaps. This book if full of presumptions made about a person and her family that the author does not know. She is a fan, I will give her that but how she is then able to write all the unsubstantiated rumors she fills her book with makes me wander what sort of fan she is - obviously one who wants to make a lot of money. If she was really a fan she should have gone out of her way to win Steffi's favour and have Steffi consult on the book. From what I have read the Graf family and their associates went to great lengths to make it very difficult for Heady to write the book and the final result shows this.
Heady has depended on other peoples version of events. People who either don't really know the Graf's or have something to gain by making up wild rumors concerning Steffi and her family. I am sure Heady had good intentions when starting out but all she has ended up with is a book full of speculation and and slander. A real fan would have tried harder.........
- The book seems to consist of little more than recycled old newspaper and magazine articles coupled with bizarre personal attacks. It contains a lot of undocumented allegations when it comes to Steffis personal life, and when it comes to her tennis there is very little insightful information. It appears, the author has not bothered speaking with annyone close to Graf, and it shows all too clearly. Frankly, one does not get the impression that too much effort was put into this book.
- From a fan's point of view, the world of super sports stars seems to be full of glamour and glitz and one forgets that their is a humanness hidden beneath all the fables. This book was certainly unbiased on all counts. In fact, I felt rather sad because of the seemingly lost childhood and adolescence Steffi missed. The book made me feel that this was Steffi's destiny from the moment she could lift her father's tennis racket. Peter Graf latched onto a prodigy to carry on his unfulfilled dreams and ambitions. However, his extremeness in handling Steffi's career and lack of sensitivity in letting her just be a child certainly left its mark even today at 30 years old. Yes, he did in fact give her a career but somehow the 'everything in moderation' translation got loss in the shuffle. I thank God that Steffi is finally emerging from her cocoon, really enjoying her craft by learning to share it with others and reaching out to attain the happiness and contentment that has been so elusive throughout her life. This book makes you want to put your arm around her and tell her that all is well in the world and no matter what she does beyond the world of tennis is really okay as long as she is happy doing it. Lift your head high and go for it all, Steffi! You certainly have earned it!

1 comments about '63: The Story of the 1963 World Championship Chicago Bears.
- It has become fashionable in the last several years to write books about a particular year in sports whether it is baseball, or in this case, football. David Halberstan wrote "October '64", and "Summer of '49", both of which do justice to the subject at hand. Unfortunately, this effort on the Chicago Bears' 1963 championship season is a short read, and certainly not an in depth study of the topic at hand. At times the authors seem to fill in space on matters that have nothing to do with the Bears' season. An example is when we are told about ex Baltimore Colt and Pittsburgh Steeler Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb's death which took place after he was not only out of football, but after the Bears' championship. Short anecdotes are told by various players on a variety of subjects throughout the book and appear to act as a filler. I had a local bookstore order the book for me. If I had a chance to leaf through the book in a bookstore to see the format of comments jumping from one individual to another I probably would have put it back on the shelf. The subject matter of the Bears 1963 season is a worthy subject of a book, but we need someone else to tell the story. This book appears to have been hastily put together.
