3 comments about Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers.

  1. I have used this book extensively to search for antique fly rods. A very comprehesive study of the craft. As the author of I Never Liked Those C-130's Anyway I found the history and detail very useful while working on a new book about fly fishing.
Very interesting read. I now have a whole new appreciation for the art of rod making.

  2. While the book generally does an outstanding job of deftly balancing good resarch and an entertaining style, it stumbles badly when west of the Mississippi. What happened to (at the least) Winston, or Powell? Neither one is in the index, and I could not find them in the text. The eastern U.S. bias is quite clear.

  3. This is by far the best book that I have read and read and re-read on fly fishing tackle. The history of early bamboo fly rod makers is extraordinary, very informative and extremely interesting. If you are interested in fly fishing rods and reels, this book is well worth the price. This is a large book with lots of information on rods, reels, collecting, tackle manufacturing, tackle value, etc. etc. the list goes on. You won't be disappointed!

5 comments about Modern Fishing Lure Collectibles Identification and Value Guide.

  1. Definitive collections for avid collectors of fishing gear will not be complete without adding the fifth volume of Russell E. Lewis's Modern Fishing Lure Collectibles, which continues Lewis' prior volumes offering identification and value guides to lures from the 1970s, 1980s and modern times. Packed with color photos of lures often in their boxes and new, paired with prices and including text descriptions and lure history, it's a top pick for any with an avid interest in fishing lures.

  2. I wanted to know more about the value of fishing lures and more about the specifics regarding their history, makers, models, and materials. This book hit the mark on almost all points. It is an excellent adjunct to a fishing lure library and if a person has such a collection it would be remiss not to include this. That said, this is not the penultimate fishing lure book. That is another.... and you should be sure to find it.

  3. The great variety of fishing lures with the differences in their bright markings and sizes can be disarming to even experienced collectors. With his 20 years experience as a collector, Lewis makes sense of this area of collecting by classifying the lures by their makers, and with introductory essays on "Dating Techniques" and the "Modern Era." The chapters with the classifications are more than simple listings of numerous lures. Besides sharp color photos with annotations, these chapters also include information on the manufacture of the respective lures and details of them to look for. Advertising and promotional literature and displays are shown as aids in identifying different lures and understanding their design and features. A serious collector or dealer of lures could not find a better guide than this for what it does cover of this incredibly diverse and constantly changing field.

  4. A great book for someone not interested in the "old"
    pricy lures.
The lures described and photographed in this book , can
still be found and collected without breaking the bank. The many size & colors of Modern Era lures , make them fun and affordable to collect. This is Vol #1 and there is now a Vol # 2 published.

  5. I wound up returning this book as it proved to disappoint me similar to the other reviews. Their were very few prices and there are much better books available.

3 comments about Classic Hunting Collectibles: Identification & Price Guide.

  1. "Classic Hunting Collectibles: Identification & Price Guide" is an excellent and much overdo work in the field of sporting collectibles. The images are in color and covers a vast number of the most desired items sought by collectors. It is a must for any collector and/or hunting/fishing enthusiast.

  2. Knowing author Hal Boggess, I know his knowledge is second to none in the field of hunting collectibles. The photographs are just super and the price of the book is very reasonable. Books in this same field sell for double or triple the price and not nearly as well written as Mr. Boggess.

All photographs are in COLOR. Amazing. This is just what we in the sporting collectible field need. I have read this book over and over. This is just the book needed by the hunting collectible community.

His current listed item values is certainly in line with the current sporting collectible market. The values are listed below each of over 1100 color photographs.

  3. The book is well planned and organized and does an excellent job revealing Mr. Boggess' knowledge of hunting collectibles. Expert photography in combination with high grade paper stock do an outstanding job of detailing the presentations for easy identification. What a great combination if there were a follow-up book highlighting fishing collectibles!

5 comments about The Complete Book of Frisbee: The History of the Sport & the First Official Price Guide.

  1. Being an old dog, I was around for much of the late 70's, early 80's history that Victor alludes to. It was great to take this look down memory lane, as well as find a lot of new information. The disc trading guide has already proved itself helpful. I strongly recommend this book for any flying disc enthusiast.

  2. I love this book! It's the only one I have as a reference as to the history of Frisbee/Frisbies. I admit, the prices in my edition (1998) are out of date--they continue to go up!
I refer to this book all the time and each time I pick up something new. It's loaded with tons of great photos. It's a MUST for any Frisbee/flying disc lover.
I'm disappointed in the direction Wham-o has taken lately and the quality of the product they are now producing, but the history of Frisbees and the people involved along the way make this book a must-have!
One will have a much greater appreciation for those little flying discs (no matter what they're called or whose name is on them) once they have read this book.

  3. This book is a must for anyone associated with or interested in Frisbees, golf discs and Frisbie Pie Tins. Not only does it provide a guide for determining value of many highly collectible discs, it's entertaining, well-written, and well-designed. A collector's item in its own right and I highly recommend.

From a Frisbee professional, and the author of "I'm Living Your Dream Life," and "The Things I Wish I'd Said," McKenna Publishing Group

  4. If you're buying this book as a priceguide to old or collectable frisbees, you should know this. Since the advent of online auctioning after 1998, many more frisbees have come out of the closet. Therefore, the priceguide part of the book is woefully out of date. Most collectable Frisbee prices as stated in the book are overvalued by 30-60%. I hope a revision of this book is printed soon.

  5. Don't be fooled by the title, this is not the complete book of frisbee. Ultimate only rates a couple of pages, for starters. There is nothing to speak of on throwing technique. It is not particularly well edited, either - many assertions and heresay have slipped through the net. Lots of nice pictures of collectable discs, if that's what you're into. A bit of a disappointment given the dearth of books-in-print about throwing technique and ultimate.

1 comments about Heddon Catalogs 1902-1953: Over 50 Years of Great Fishing.

  1. I read through this at the library. The Heddon heritage is kept well alive with this book and any fisherman or collector would be missing out if they don't read about Heddon's legacy. Because of the Heddon family, we now have a $30 billion dollar recreational fishing industry supporting over 300,000 jobs.

1 comments about Warman's Fishing Lures Field Guide: Values And Identification.

  1. This book is a great little resource. I purchased it for my Dad for Christmas. He is an avid fisherman who has started collecting vintage fishing lures for the past few years. When garage sale season comes around, he and my Mom like to go look for treasures. When he opened this little book for Christmas, he was so excited. He did not put it down for hours. He said the descriptions and illustrations were great. He also stated that there were a lot of lures in this little field manual that he did not have in his larger resource books. He loved the fact that it was small enough to keep in his pocket when he's going to garage sales!

2 comments about Pinball Perspectives: Ace High to World's Series.

  1. I bought this book to help me understand pinball playfield design. While it has been a great resource to learn about machines, it is not as in depth as I was hoping. Each chapter has 1 full photograph of the whole machine (like on the cover) and several smaller close up shots showing important features. For my purposes, as I read about the machines features and rules I had to keep skipping back to the beginning of the chapter to see the full photo to get a better understanding.

I would have liked to see more pictures and perhaps some diagramming of ball movement on the playfield.

A definite plus is when you get a chapter with comments from the artists or designers involved and they share with you a bit of what was going on in their industry at the time. Also the snapshots of people playing pinball in various locations as well as Marco Rossignoll's snippets of personal life add charm to this book.

  2. Pinball Perspectives: Ace High to World's Series
This is a fantastic book! Hundreds and hundreds of beautiful photos accompanied with great text describing these nostalgic machines. This book is a "must have" for all pinball collectors or anyone who has an interest in mechanical marvels!
