4 comments about Sports Immortals: Stories of Inspiration and Achievement.

  1. "Sports Immortals" is a fantastic nonfiction novel writen by Jim Platt. Sports Immortals has the best collection of sports items ever.If you look in the book and see all the valuable items, they are all owned by one person, his name is Joel Platt. He started collecting them when he was in the hospital and Babe Ruth came to visit him. Some items were Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves, Oscar Robinson's basketball jersey, and Bade Bruth's baseball jersey. There are many different characters who were the best athletes in the world.

Sports Immortals is a collection of stories about some of the greatest sports times and athletes of all time and discribe the lives and challenging times they had to go through. For example, when Michael Jordan won his forth NBA title he cried because his father had been killed that summer. I also liked when it talked about the 1980 U.S. hockey team and how their whole team was made up of collage players, and then they won the gold metal in Lake Placid, NY. This is a great book because it shows all the things that athletes have to go through to achieve their goals and accomplishments.

I would recommend this book to people who want to learn about sports history. I loved this book because it showed how hard it is to be an athlete and what difficuties they have to conquer. This book was a fantastic book that I loved and I think you would too.

  2. Wow! What a great book. Inspiring stories from the greatest athletes in the world. The stories are well written and enjoyable to read. It is quite evident that the book is a result of many years of hard work, dedication and a labor of love. The layout is awesome and the pictures are even better. It is a great gift for all ages.

  3. Truly an exceptional gathering of sports legends and their respective histories, Sports Immortals takes us on a tour that even sports-phobic individuals will love. From baseball and football, to skating and NASCAR, the pages capture the essence of the cultural phenomenon that we take for granted today.
Unexpectedly, most interesting are the pages which highlight not the obvious modern-day heroes, but rather the legends of yester-year, such as Jack Johnson (1910 African-American prize fighter) or Don Budge (1930's tennis champion).
Although some of the accompanying pictures are seemingly boring at first glance, they take on new life when you realize that these are actual items in Joel and Jim Platt's museum collection.

And that, of course, is the point of the book--to make us realize that these individuals are real and not simply the intangible "stuff of legend." In particular, the photos and supplemental annotations at the end of the book illustrate not only the diversity and amazing progress of the sports world (check out the 1864 ice skates!), but also the incessant controversies that accompany it (must-see letter of Jack Johnson's confession of throwing the big fight).

I now display the book proudly on my coffee table for all to view. What more can I say....the only thing better is to go to Boca Raton, FL to see it for real.

  4. I received a copy of this book from my friend. This book is full of great stories and photographs of the greatest athletes of all time. The book goes beyond the typical information you have seen in the past and opens the door to interesting stories about the author's father, who has collected an amazing amount of incredible memorabilia. The photographs of the items in Joel Platt's collection amazed me. His story and moments with these athletes is also very inspirational.

I recommend this book and hope to one day see Joel realize his dreams of opening his Sports Immortals museum so that I can enjoy the full extent of his collection.

1 comments about NASCAR Die-Cast Collector's Value Guide (Collector's Value Guides).

  1. The book was very well written, with much research. Very useful for for all Nascar cars collectible's fanatics. Much information on each Nascar driver.A good source to keep track of value of current and older cars .Being able to keep track of your own cars with space provided for each car with driver . It also has a lot of history about Nascar Legends , living and decseaed . The only part that disappionted me was, that ther where only NINE drivers listed, with pictures of there cars. Granted these were the Top ones , I was still not 100% happy with the book .To me ,there are way, way more than NINE great NASCAR drivers that sould have been mentioned .

5 comments about Bobbing Head Dolls: 1960-2000.

  1. Excellent book, well written on a collectible that has received no coverege for too long.Everything you need to know about old bobbing head dolls.

  2. This book is THE guide to get to help you start your bobblehead collection! It has all the old nodders listed, how tough they are to find, variations, and prices. (...)

  3. Anybody who collects vintage 1960's Bobbing Heads needs to have this book. Tim Hunter is the foremost authority on Japan made "nodders" from the 60's and has spent decades researching them. This book has become the "bible" for Bobbing Head collectors, combining a history lesson, detailed price guide, and helpful hints for collectors. Whether you are a veteran collector or a beginner, this book is a must!

  4. As a long time BB card collector, my parents stumbled onto a bobbing head, an item I didn't have. Needless to say I have gotten hooked, with my collection now over twenty dolls. I read the large print on the cover, and thought it would be just what I needed, but the book is really about dolls from 1960-1972. The author simply blows off the newer versions as being too manufactured and barely covers them. A better detail history of the newer dolls and more aggressive price guide would have made this book a 5star.

  5. I just start collecting bobbing head dolls without any knowledge.I wasn't sure where I can learn about.this book helps me a lot.Gives me lots of info etc....I wish this book had a lot more color-photo of dolls.

3 comments about Warman's Sports Collectibles: A Value & Identification Guide (Encyclopedia of Antiques and Collectibles) (Encyclopedia of Antiques and Collectibles).

  1. One thing that is not immediately obvious is the year published.
I was a little dissappointed that the information I was given did not include the fact that it was a 2000 issue and not 2001.

5 comments about The Sports Address Book: A Collector's Guide to Free Autographs.

  1. I am really enjoying this book - it's a lot of fun to have the chance to write to my favorite sports personalities. It's nicely organized in alphabetical order and makes for an interesting guide. Nicely done!

  2. I purchased this book as a beginning collector of sports autographs. In no time, I received signed photos from Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky and Muhammad Ali. I'm still sending out a lot of requests and look forward to going to the mailbox every day! I'm really happy with the results of this book and would much rather have this guide to refer to as opposed to spending hours upon hours trying to piece this much information together myself. I think the author did a fantastic job and should be recognized for her hard work. Looking forward to future projects from this talented young lady!

  3. I bought the Sports Address book for my 14 year old son for the Holidays, and we were both greatly disppointed! I could have authored this book! 99% of the addresses are in care of teams, or in care of organizations! Anyone can find the address of a team! It must have taken this author less than 2 days to write this book! The title is deceiving! It should be titled, Sports Autographs-Care of Teams! We are trying to find a way to return this book!It was a waste of over thirty dollars. It was an insult to the true autograph collector! The author, if she had any decency, should buy this book back from us, and give it to a member of her family, as a Holiday present!

  4. All of the addresses are C/O a team or Association. You could spend 10 minutes online and get all of the addresses in this book. Very dissapointed!

  5. I purchased this book as a gift for a member of my family who primarily collects sports autographs. After receiving it, I looked through the pages and found that there are listings for so many favorites! We are really big racing fans and I was pleased to see so many addresses for drivers - this book will make a great gift for my cousin!

4 comments about Antique & Collectible Fishing Reels: Identification, Evaluation, and Maintenance.

  1. The book was very nicely done. The photos and detail were displayed to easily compare your product. Recommend highly.

  2. Without hesitation I highly recommend this book. Mr. Jellison clearly provides a general primer on reel collecting and patent history. He includes thousands of value listings and I feel that the coverage of the subject is substantial, particularly in the area of reel repairs and evaluation of reel defects. A good reference for anyone interested in fishing reels of the past!

  3. The book is very general! There are not very many specifics about any of the reels. In fact,I personally own several reels from manufactors of reels listed in the book that are not even listed. I was very disappionted. If I would have been able to review this book in a book store,I would have not purchised it!

  4. This book is of great value and interest to the collector of fishing equipment. They will know what to look for when attending swap meets and yard sales. It will also help them to make repairs if needed to their finds.
