5 comments about The Last Ride.

  1. Disappointed in this book. Not A Patrick D. Smith book that's for sure.
Make sure he is the author only.

  2. This was a funny, touching true life story that I couldn't put down! Definitely a great book for anyone, whether you like rodeo or not.

  3. I loved this book. It was one of the only books I have read with such a real life country setting. Not only was this guy a wonderful bullrider but was and is a good person at heart. Being raised around cattle and horses made for a great start for a bullrider. I think this book is very enlightening to the life of a bullrider and how hard they work to become what they are. It takes a very special person to climb on the back of a bull, and try to hang on for 8 seconds. They are faced with life and death everytime they nodd there head and come out of those chutes.

I couldn't put this book down. I would recommend this to anyone. Please take the time to read this book and you will soon appreciate the courage these guys have in taking on a bull.

  4. The night my book arrived I burnt supper because I couldn't put it down. I found myself up at 2am reading it. I laughed, I cried and I laughed so hard that I cried reading the stories and remembering the people and places from this book. PeeWee, You did a wonderful job, I am soo very proud of you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a look into the life and character of a cowboy!! Hurry up and write us another one!!

  5. I met Pee Wee Mercer when I was a senior in high school and we became very good friends and we traveled the high school rodeo circuit in 1985.Only living 10 miles from each other,we did alot of things that year.I went on and served my country, while my partner cont. with the rodeo circuit. This book was such an excellent story of a great bullrider and a wonderful person.Rodeo is a tough life and there's many bruises and broken bones along the way and when you start reading it, you discover what it takes to be a professional bullrider.I went to the hospital just after the accident and as I looked at my little buddy, I just couldn't imagen what the future held for him,but I can say that he's taken something awfully and has done what few people could even dream about . Pee Thanks for all the memories and the stories, will be looking forward to another book soon. Your friend Rowland Cortese

3 comments about What Color Is a Butterfly.

  1. I found the author's lack of writing skill distracting. Many sentences were awkwardly written. At times it is confusing which character she is writing about since she assumes the identity of each character with the pronoun "I." The redundancy of information given is appalling. Information in one paragraph is repeated in another paragraph a few pages later, almost word of word. This happens several times in the book. Did anyone edit this book?

  2. "Your Mother was an admirable lady. She mastered her fate with determination, great willpower and a positive attitude and she was always aware that she was so fortunate to be born into this family, giving her so much love and understanding and support to develop her special talents. It was useful to me once to realize, what it means to be blind, because I really never thought of such a situation."

  3. A child without sight grows up to be a talented musician, complete homemaker, career woman and mother of three. The story of her training and over-coming visual imparement is an inspiration to everyone who reads this carefully crafted biograpy. What Color Is A Butterfly is an ispirational journey into the qualities of perception, courage and creativity. Humor softens the sadness and hope strengthens the drive to "be normal." A book that will give a lift to all who read this story.

1 comments about Sugar and Spice and Puppy Dog Tails: Growing Up Intersexed.

  1. I've read very few memoirs as utterly revealing and no-holds-barred as Katherine Connella's powerful coming of age story. Born intersexed at a time when the condition was a complete medical mystery (it's only now becoming broadly discussed in the medical community), Connella was raised as a boy, all the while knowing deep down that she was indeed female. Her tale takes you through mental institutions, violence, discrimination, and misunderstanding, yet she clearly tells this difficult tale from a survivor's perspective.

If you're curious about intersexuality and eager to learn about it from a personal rather than a clinical point of view, I wholeheartedly recommend Connella's brave, moving book.

  1. This book is very informative and heartfelt. Takes you thru day one and her sons recovery from a car accident that led to traumatic brain injury. Having had a brother in a similar situation it really hit home for me. Wish I had this book then.

5 comments about Of Moose and Miracles.

  1. We all know people who have survived seemingly insurmountable tragedy. We wonder at their strength, their ability to continue living through circumstances that would stop most of the rest of us dead in our tracks. For these types of individuals, one common denominator is frequently faith, which can often be an inspirational stepping stone for others.

Of Moose and Miracles (CMJ Publishers, May 2002, paperback, 175 pages) is the story of a family whose faith helped them through what is surely one of life's greatest heartbreaks: the death of a child, Kraig Frick. Written by Marion Lee, the story that unfolds before us is told in the voice of Karyl Frick, Kraig's mother. In Karyl's words, we meet her son, the youngest of seven children and learn of his fatal diagnosis.

Lee's book has the feel of a compelling religious novel, but its impact lies in the fact that this is a real story that happened to a real family. With compassionate empathy, she gives voice to a mother's love, pain and ultimate triumph over what surely is any parent's worst nightmare. The Frick family is a shining model for any family facing personal difficulties. Their ability to find the miracles present in Kraig's life and passing offer tremendous hope and encouragement.

Of Moose and Miracles is a quick read, but an incredible learning experience.

  2. A story of triumph over sadness. We all face sadness in our lives and many times do not know how to deal with it. The story of the Frick family offers much hope when confronted with adversity. It has been said that we do not choose WHAT we go through but we do choose HOW we go through it. "Of Moose and Miracles" is a beautifully written book illustrating one family's choice that led to many miracles. A MUST READ!!

  3. This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read! I laughed and cried with the Frick family. Everyone, no matter your denomination or degree of faith, feels the true presence of God in their lives when they read this book. I can't wait to read it again!

  4. This story is one of sorrows, hopes, and many graces. It a testament to one family's faith as they face the loss of their youngest member. It is a beautiful story of a faith community growing ever larger coming together with prayers, faith and love.

It a story of many graces and miracles.

  5. Life has a randomness that contains both good and bad elements, and the story of the Frick family embodies both. The bad for this family is the tragedy that befalls their youngest son Kraig, a vibrant independent child, who finds himself afflicted with an inoperable brain stem tumor. The good is the strong belief the family has in their faith and how this helps them deal with this unthinkable event.

The presence that Kraig has in his short life upon the people who come to know him is incredible. And, in his death, this presence is carried on through a Franciscan priest who gains courage and strength through Kraig to accomplish things beyond his own limits.

This is a story of courage, joy and adherence to belief that will stir readers' emotions, and help them deal with their own obstacles in life. Steeped in religion, the story is told in a very comfortable manner by author Marion Lee. She has a way with words that allows readers to believe they are sitting across from Karyl Frick as she tells the story of her son.

Lee brings to life the events surrounding this family in such a way that the reader lives along with the joys and sadness of this spectacular family.

Let us hope that we don't have to wait another twelve years to be show another story from this excellent author.
