2 comments about No Time Out From Grief: Surviving the Death of My Son.

  1. No Time Out From Grief is an exceptional book and valuable contribution to grief literature. I highly recommend it for the newly bereaved, and especially for newly bereaved parents. Terri and John Huber offer testimony to the healing power of love and hope. One minute at a time, one foot in front of the other, this family learned to survive the tragic death of their son, and readers will gather strength from their story.

  2. I found the book very compeling and my heart went out to the author and her family. The main point I received from the journels were don't forget our family and don't forget my son. I see how very important it is for the families to discuss their loss and remember to them their loved one. Don't be afraid to talk about someones life, they love knowing that you remember.

The book was very emotional but every bit worth reading. It helped me better understand the griefing process and the overwheming pain of loosing a child.

4 comments about Limbo on the Yalu...and Beyond!.

  1. Mr. Sprouse's story is told is plain language, and holds a reader's interest. That means, unfortunately, that there were too many sad, scary, miserable, mistreated days to get through. The POW experience, particularly as a sample of the (under-reported and under-represented) Korean War story, is well-documented. The issue of "progressives" or collaborators is looked at without apology for naming names. The "and Beyond" part of the book is often forgotten more than the Korean War itself; Ted Sprouse and the authors speak for too many men. Not always uplifting, but a seriously good read.

  2. This book is one of inspiration and courage... it is one you can not put down... The events these men went through makes you realize what you have in life and how friendship really can overcome all obstacles... I recommend this book to everyone... once your done reading, the triumph of all vetrans will stay in your heart and mind for a lifetime!

  3. This book is EXCELLENT! It is one you won't be able to put down... It is remarkable that this is a true story it just shows what our soldiers have truly done for our freedom... This book is one of inspiration and courage... and once your through you will look at life in a whole new perspective!

  4. This was a very inspirational book, about a man who had to sacrafice alot for this great country of ours! The tellings of what he had to go through, and how those friends, he met along the way, helped him get through it all, is just very touching! It tells apart of our history not many people know about, and gives the deserved recognition to those men who fought in the Korean War. It certainly deserves 5 stars! I could not put it down, once I started reading it!

1 comments about BREATHLESS CL.

  1. I loved Desalvo's Crazy in the Kitchen and was very eager to read this book, as both my sons have asthma. However, I found this read extremely irritating. Of course, one can only write from one's own perspective, but Desalvo's perspective on asthma is so very different than that of so many asthma sufferers, young children. She seems overly involved in her own illness, and fascinated by her own symptoms, which do not seem terribly severe to me. Mainly, however, I was annoyed by her view of asthma as a illness caused by emotional trauma---a view that has long been discredited. Certainly it's a more interesting topic to write about than it would be to attribute asthma to traditional medical causes, and it allows her to explore asthma in literature, but it also reminds me of those bashing "refrigerator mothers" for autism. I think her asthma could be quite easily explained in part by living near NYC and driving through polluted air each day, and working in a closed building near smokers.

I think this book should be seen as a survey of asthmatics in literature, and not in any way as a depiction and explanation of asthma as a disease.

1 comments about My Father Was Bipolar.

  1. This is a terrible book. The story is very boring. Her father is barely mentioned because he isn't even living in the home most of the time. Its more about what goes on when he's not there. Her father was also never diagnosed as being bipolar, and the author is very unconvincing when explaining why she thinks he was. Anyone who knows anything about this disorder will be very disappointed in this book.

1 comments about Yes You Can!: Commitment and Strategies for Overcoming Bipolar and Unipolar Depression.

  1. The sentences in this book are disjointed, as though the author was writing down random thoughts. I found this very disconcerting and it made the book difficult to understand, even though the author writes in layman's terms. There are some pages towards the end of the book where the author gets lost in thanking his peers, and this throws the book off kilter as well. His coping mechanisms are not very helpful either, since most of us cannot be world travelers or sing in nightclubs when we are depressed, but there are a few good pointers. The difficulty lies in selecting the pointers out of the jumble of words. I got the feeling the author needed to write for his own sake, and was not targeting any audience. As a result, we have a journal of random thoughts and a cocktail of suggestions here and there. I got a few good tips from the book, however, and so I cannot count it as a total loss.
