4 comments about When You See the Emu in the Sky: My Journey of Self-Discovery in the Outback.

  1. A beautiful book about Liz Fuller's spiritual journey to Australia and the lessons she learns in the Outback. I could hardly put it down and was disappointed to have it end. The simple beauty of the wisdom shared by Max, her Aborigine friend and teacher, and the other people of his village, brought me to tears more than once. We should all be so lucky to take such a journey.

  2. I read the book and then had the opportunity to meet and talk with the author at length. In and of itself, it is an easy and entertaining read. The story does seem a bit fantastic, but after speaking with Ms. Fuller, it is clear that these events did take place and had an impact on her life. (And yes, I did get to see the egg...quite fascinating!)

  3. Elizabeth doesn't feel good after the dead of her husband. She decides to go to Australia and there she meets an aboriginal. She tries to live the way they live and starts to understand the meaning of life. Before I read this book I had problems with stress, but while reading it, I felt the stress falling of.

  4. Fantastic story of someone that makes a journey in Australia. You would want to go there directly.

1 comments about W. E. B. Du Bois: Black Radical Democrat.

  1. What makes Du Bois so interesting is not only his intellect but that there were many intelligent people around him that challenged his mind. Booker T. and Garvey are the obvious ones but E. Franklin Frazier, A. Philip Randolph, Alexander Crummel and a host of others did as well. Manning does an exceptional job detailing one of the greats of the 20th Century. Black people should search this book to see not only what liberation requires but also as a tool to be used in order to filter through the many quasi leaders parading around today. "Any education that black people receive must be centered around solving their political, social and economic problems. It must start in Africa and come right up to the present day Negro." I'm para-phrasing but has anyone heard anything near this insightful from the characters of the last 25 years?

1 comments about Fairbairn's Journey into the Interior.

  1. William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn made an enormous contribution to psychoanalysis in the early part of this century although he was little known in his own lifetime. This fascinating psycho-biography of a great man of the mind gives insights into his own development and the reasons why he gave up ideas of working in the clergy, to study medicine and arrive at his Object Relations Theory, which is now receiving much wider attention around the globe. It is a fantastic book - but then I would think that: WRD Fairbairn was my grandfather.

2 comments about Tony Pastor, Father of Vaudeville.

  1. This is a major book about a man at the very heart of vaudeville -- a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American entertainment.

  2. Our most important theatrical biographer of American historical stage figures has written the definitive biography of perhaps the most important nineteenth century theatrical impresario. Armond Fields, who previously has written books about Weber and Fields (Lew Fields, a distant relative), Eddie Foy, Lillian Russell, James J. Corbett, Fred Stone, Sophie Tucker, Maude Adams and Women Vaudeville stars, adds "Father of Vaudeville" Tony Pastor to his growing shelf of valuable books.

This is not merely a biography of Pastor's eventful life as child prodigy entertainer and theatrical impresario (1837-1908), although it is that too. Pastor's story encompasses a social and cultural history of the New York theater, and by extension, of New York itself, from his father's time in the early nineteenth century to Pastor's death, and the author is more than up to the task. Pastor's story coincides with the growth of Vaudeville and other forms of stage entertainment- minstrelsy, musical theater, et al, and how New Yorkers of different classes and immigrant origins responded to each. The result was to make the theater-going experience part of American's entertainment. Factored into the story is a capsule history of the effect on theater of economic conditions and labor troubles. Along the way Fields explores American popular song, variety entertainment, operetta, pioneer black entertainers, women patrons, the Civil War and New York City draft riots, and theatrical patriotism.

As in other Fields books, there are ample period photographs and delicious side portraits of other important stage figures. The author has the ability, not always present in serious studies in this field, of combining prodigious research with a breezy and accessible reading style. Tony Pastor, a major figure of American theater, has finally achieved, a century after his death, a fitting biography.
