3 comments about Chihuly Atlantis.

  1. The challenge was to bring beauty to paradise-and the Sun and Moon. Sol Kerzner asked Dale Chihuly to make dazzling yet approachable sculpture for the new Atlantis Resort Hotel on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Chihuly's answer: four sculptures that respond to Atlantis' architecture and the singular beauty of the site. The Crystal Gate is a glittering tower of crystal soaring nearly 20 feet into the air. The Temple of the Sun has more than 2,300 yellow, orange, and red elements radiating from a fiery globe atop a replica of a Mayan temple. The opalescent white and cobalt blue glass of the Temple of the Moon seems to glow and fill the room with a cool light. Finally, the magnificent Atlantis Seaform Chandelier displays the sealife forms of jellyfish, anemones, squid, and seaweed in delicate shades highlighted with silver and gold. In this extravagant book, designed by Werkhaus Design of Seattle, each piece is shown from concept through completion. Chihuly, working with a collaborative and creative team of artists, glassblowers, technicians, and installers, has created glass sculptures that dazzle with the magic of light.

  2. This book gives a behind the scenes detailing of the creation of the four Chihuly glass sculptures in the Atlantis resort and casino on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The sculptures themselves are amazing to behold, and I'd say that the photos in this book do them some amount of justice. While reading the book in the Atlantis gift shop, my girlfriend and I noticed several aspects of the scultpures which we had missed, and we went back to take a second look.

This is certainly not a book for someone wanting to read about Chihuly, or the sculptures he created for the resort. Aside from the acknowledgement section, you'd be hard pressed to find 1000 words in the whole book. But if you're interested in seeing the artwork, and you can't make it to the Bahamas to see it in person, each picture in this book says at least a thousand words, and many of them are "wow".

(The book would run you $45 in the Atlantis gift shop, so you'll save a few dollars here as well.)

  3. A good book that discusses the contreversy of the sunken city of Atlanti

2 comments about Collecting Antique Stickpins: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. This is the only stickpin book I am aware of, and I don't believe there needs to be another one. Great for stickpin collectors, jewelry enthusiasts, etc. Highly recommended!

  2. As a collector of all stickpins, I gained much knowledge from this book. It covers many catagories and types of stickpins and scarfpins from all eras prior to the 1940s. It was also fun to just see the quality pictures of this lady's collection. To a collector or dealer, this book will be well worth the price. I refer to it again and again.

1 comments about Sculpture of a City: Philadelphia's Treasures in Bronze and Stone.

  1. This is a great resource for anyone interested in Philadelphia art. Here's an excerpt from dust jacket, "...contains 23 major essays by leading art historians, dealing with important works created during 6 periods from the Revolution to the present. Shorter essays & illustrated notes cover several hundred additional works ... John Canaday, noted art critic for the NY Times, said ... 'These are some of the finest photographs of sculpture that I've ever seen.'"

1 comments about Frederick Hart: Changing Tides.

  1. Enhanced with an informative foreword by Frederick Turner (Founders Professor of Arts and Humanities, University of Texas, Dallas) and an insightful essay by Michael Novak (an expert on Hart's work and holder of the George Frederick Jewett Chair in Religion and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute, Washington, D.C.), Changing Tides is a 256-page monograph on sculptor Frederick hart (1943-1999) which is superbly illustrated with 128 color plates, 12 duo tones, and 83 halftones. Readers and art students will appreciate Frederick hart's working processes as renowned sculptor of the human form. Changing Tides is a seminal, core addition to professional, art school, community and university library 20th Century Art History collections with respect to the development of figural sculpture in America.
