2 comments about The Bulfinch Anatomy of Antique China and Silver: An Illustrated Guide to Tableware, Identifying Period, Detail and Design.

  1. This book is organized well, easy to understand and nicely illustrated. Provides a picture time line of the evolution of tableware and eating customs. Very interesting and helpful to the novice in developing an understanding of manufacture, style and utilization of table ware Readers shoul have an increased ability to identify pieces as to their origin, era and use. Only short coming was the book did not provide illustrations of the manufacturers marks. The author talked about them but should have shown them as they can help with the identification of the piece.

  2. The reader is taken on a tour through the ages from the 16th century to the Retro period. Each general period, representing changes in design, style and use, begins with a table setting demonstrating functionality. Feature articles focus on important changes or developments in each period. A new perspective and understanding is, indeed, imparted.

1 comments about Faberge: Lost and Found : The Recently Discovered Jewelry Designs from the St. Petersburg Archives.

  1. This book reproduces 2 original faberge design books found in St Petersburg. They cover the years 1909 to 1915. Before Faberge sold an item they drew it in these ledgers in watercolour and noted all the details of the stones and materials it was made of.

Many of the designs are for tiaras, fans, broaches etc. In some cases they have been matched up with the original pieces so you get to see both the drawing and what was actually made.

This book is interesting for the different view it gives you of faberge objects. It is also a new source of information. It is not heavy on text and instead concentrates on reproducing the ledgers in colour.

2 comments about Newcomb Pottery: An Enterprise for Southern Women, 1885-1904.

  1. Professor Poesch has done a wonderful, scholarly work which is both readable and "reference-able". I was lucky enough to see the Newcomb Pottery retrospective exhibition (many years ago) at Tulane during an architectural history meeting and hear a few words from Prof. Poesch. This author's humbly priced volume is a priceless record of some very important research and history on the topic of Newcomb ceramics, as well as an insightful report of the enterprise and its craftsmen and craftswomen during this interesting period. The collection of pictures is a rare treat to the eye, given how far-flung are the presented examples.

  2. This book gives an excellent history of the Woman's role in decorative ceramic Pottery during the early 1900's. It is a beautiful sourcebook that introduces not only a destinctive Art form, but highlights the individual Artists involved. The Art reflects a respect for the South and Southern enviornment showing designs of animals and plants found in the Deep South. It is a true American history of Pottery displaying a unique, refined Southern Style.

1 comments about The Shipcarvers Handbook: How to Design and Execute Traditional Marine Carvings.

  1. I am very impressed with the content and the overall knowledge with respect to marine carving by the author. His focus on design and project dimensions would make a huge difference on whether your carving looks good or improperly sized. He also covers techniques in wood bending and mounting scrolls and other objects over curved transoms. I can't wait to build my first nameboard for my boat after reading this gem.

1 comments about Facing the Other: Charles Cordier (1827-1905) Ethnographic Sculptor (Exhibition Catalogue).

  1. An extraordinary companion book to exhibitions of the work of Sculptor Charles Cordier(1827-1905)as exhibited in 2004-05 @ Museums in Paris, Quebec and New York. It is the finest display of Ethnographic Art in the form of lifelike busts that I've ever witnessed. It forever emphasizes the universality of beauty and nobility displayed in the human form across all divisions of race and ethnicity.
