2 comments about Rebecca Horn: Drawings, Sculptures, Installations 1964-2006.
- I agree with the previous review. This book is missing some of the critical works and powerful discussions generated by Rebecca Horn, the book is incomplete.
- I was hoping for a more thorough compendium of this powerful artist's work. This book is good, but it's missing some important pieces in Horn's portfolio. Still her work is profound and makes me want to see it all, in person. The art is installation, drawings and performances of a very experiential nature, somewhat akin to Bruce Nauman.

5 comments about Stone Circles: A Modern Builders Guide to the Megalithic Revival.
- Any one interested in Stone Circles should read this book! It is just not another coffee table edition. This is an excellent study in circles, their meaning and how they were constructed.
There are detailed accounts of travelling to many stone circles around the world - new and old, with even chapters on how to build a stone circle and the alignments. An excellent new, fresh look at the stone giants that haunts us today and their relationship with our lives.
- I can hardly wait to start laying out my own little "stone henge" and with this book I now know how! I always wondered how they did it, now thanks to Rob Roy, not only do I know how they did it, but now I know how I can do it too! Rob provides history, lore, safety tips, labor saving "secrets" of the ancients, great anecdotes and practical and technical instruction on site selection and preparation, stone selection and preparation, constuction of safe and durable megalithic structures, and even a human and spiritual side of the subject that can be quite energizing. With this book anyone can find their own connection to our ancient ancestors! In addition to all the information provided, this book also harbors some very phenominal photographs of both ancient and modern megalithic structures around the world. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one...if your disapointed then you have no soul!
- Rob Roy's book, Stone Circles, is perhaps the most comprehensive and masterful work on the topic of stone circles by a living author today. There is much more to megalithic stone circles than just the movement and placement of massive dormant objects. When properly placed, they become permanent monuments to a timeless spiritual perspective. Considering our fragile and tenuous hold on life, we humans, especially in modern times, would do well to learn about and understand these marvels of engineering, determination, and dedication. Rob Roy's book gives us all a good place to start.
- Here's that book on engineering that bridges the gap between the left and right brain. Rob Roy captures you with an engaging writing style that'll accidentally open the secret door to some other very intriguing dimensions. Go for the science -- stay for the spiritual rousing. Well thought out and perfect for any awareness.
Genuine magic. Rock on, Rob -- in every sense.
- Years from now, when I'm asked what books impacted my life in major ways, I'm sure I'll immediately list "Stone Circles" as one of them. This is partly because the book came along at a time when I was developing an interest in standing stones and sacred places but mostly because it treats megalithic architecture as a living art: not just a phenomenon from the past to be studied, but a way to connect, as the ancients did, with the earth and with the cycles all around us. This book truly is a "modern builder's guide to the megalithic revival." It speaks of ancient standing stones at Stonehenge, Avebury, the Orkneys, and other sites, but concentrates primarily on contemporary stone circle builders and on practical information for doing this ourselves! It's filled with incredible photos and the stories of contemporary megalithic architects and builders, as well as a wealth of technical information. Thank you, Rob Roy, and thanks to all of your colleagues for lighting a flame in me - before, I had an interest in megalithic architecture, now I am an (amateur) "megalithic anthropologist." That means that I have an interest in the study and application of how human culture and big stones interact - not just in the context of the past, but here and now. I have a small circle of stones on a shelf at home that I rearrange, am going to build some temporary circles at the beach in a couple of weeks, and I can hardly wait to go to work in the back yard this summer! Two thumbs way up for Stone Circles!

1 comments about Silver Masters of Mexico, Hector Aguilar and the Taller Borda: Hector Aguilar and the Taller Borda.
- This book is well done. But, it is not a Morrill and Berk book on an overview of Mexican Silver and Taxco. It is more narrow in scope that its title would suggest concentrating in depth on Hector Aguilar and making him much more a personna than Morill and Berk do in their book, where he is dwarfed by Spratling. The photos in this book are of homes and people. The photos there are of silver of the Taller are good but do not again expect the detail to the Morrill and Berk book. This is a supplement and to lovers of Aguilar and those who wish to know more about the man and his life both personal and professional.

2 comments about Making Mobiles (Schiffer Book for Artists).
- Purchased for a customer without internet access. Exactly what he wanted.
Thanks for the quick delivery.
- MAKING MOBILES by Bruce Cana Fox is the best book on that art/craft that I have encountered. I made a mobile in the many years ago using John Lynch's How to Make Mobiles as my guide. When I wanted to get back into the practice I did a lot of research on the net. The truth is: there just isn't a whole lot out there for the beginner. I used Making Creative Mobiles by Timothy Rose to get me going. But then, thank God, I discovered MAKING MOBILES by Fox. It is brilliant in every facet of instruction. From steering you to the best tools and materials to explaining which techniques work best and in what order, Fox is an artist willing and able to lead you through the steps of his craft in a way that sticks. The photos in his book surpass anything else I have found in my research. The reader sees how the elements of a mobile are cut, connected, finished and hung in large photos that, like Fox's commentary, anticipate the junctures at which a novice can easily go wrong.
A word about Fox's commentary--his is a wise and witty voice, cajoling and encouraging the novice who fears making a mistake; or challenging the mobile maker stuck at the designing stage with new ways of creating mobile designs. I found myself laughing at several points in the text and wishing that I could meet the man behind the words, an artist whose humanity is woven throughout the contents of this terrific book.

1 comments about Metal Corrugation: Surface Embellishment and Element Formation for the Metalsmith.
- Metal Corrugation by Patricia McAleer is an excellent tutorial on the subject of metal corrugation. The projects in the book have complete and detailed instructions and are very easy to follow. The projects can easily be completed by anyone with the most basic metalsmithing skills. Some of the projects can be done with inexpensive corrugators from craft supply stores. That is a real advantage for those that want to learn the techniques without investing lots of money. Ms. McAleer's source directory is excellent. The project photos and gallery photos are very well done and meant to inspire. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in metal work, from jewerly to sculpture.

2 comments about Turning Pens and Desk Accessories.
- The book is adequate if you want a brief, step by step, follow the picture book. If you want any real information the I sugest that you find a copy of "turning pens and pencils" by Christensen and Burningham. It covers the topic in much greater detail, with a much larger gallery.
As for the details of this book. There is four pages of text, followed by a short and basic lathe section (how to use tools and the lathe) and then a 40 page section on turning the various items. This sounds impressive, but each page contains 2-4 photos with very little explination. With this book, you will be able to turn a pen quite adequately, but you will only have "enough to get by with." Basically, it is a nice addition to your library and a good primer, but if you can have only one book, go with something else.
- I am researching information on pen turning on the wood lathe. This book is short on words, but long on beautiful full color photographs that show you how. There are pictures showing each step in the process along with a brief caption that explains the steps. The finished product is shown to depict the end result. Instructions are shown for various types of pens as well as letter openers, perfume dispenser pens, and magnifying glasses. Short sections also explain the tools and lathes that are best to use for the projects. Highly recommend this book to the beginner pen maker, or someone that wants to see the beauty of various materials used.
