1 comments about Carved Gifts for All Occasions: 100 Simple Projects for the Woodcarver.

  1. "Carved Gifts For All Occasions: 100 Simple Projects For The Woodcarver" by James E. Seitz (founding president of the Shelby Woodcarvers Guild and author of several previous woodworking books) is an impressive compendium of woodcarving projects that range from walking sticks, bowls, and pencil holders to earrings, bracelets, and brooches. There are woodcarving ideas appropriate for specific holidays and special events, as well as 'anytime' gift giving to family and friends. Each individual project is illustrated with photography and accompanied by detailed, step-by-step, do-it-yourself instructions so complete and methodical that even the most novice carvers can succeed, and which even the more experienced woodworker will find inspiring. "Carved Gifts For All Occasions" is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, and highschool woodworking class reference collections.

1 comments about A Century of American Sculpture: The Roman Bronze Works Foundry.

  1. Interested in American bronze sculpture? Well, look elsewhere. This book will only serve to frustrate collectors, dealers, scholars with a serious interest in a field which has only recently received serious attention. The book starts off well enough with a brief, though undocumented, history of this important American bronze foundry. However, the bulk of the book is devoted to a picture album of sculptures supposedly produced by the firm by about one hundred sculptors. Each sculptor is given a brief biographical summary accompanied by a page or two of reproductions. That would be useful but, in typical Schiffer indifference to reproduction quality, the photos are often grainy and/or blurry. Furthermore, not one piece is identified with its dimensions. In fact, you will find no useful documentation of the pieces exhibited. There is not one foundry mark used by Roman Bronze Works reproduced in this book. This is a fatal flaw since collectors are hungry for such information to identify and authenticate works. There is a need for serious scholarship on American bronze foundries, but unfortunately this book does not fill the bill.

4 comments about Lefton China: Price Guide.

  1. It lists good marks so you can date the pieces and is easy to understand. This is not a history book and doesn't do much for detail. I was able to find similar items and get a general price. My understand is that I will need to get the other books as each volums supposedly has more items. I will purchase the others, too.

The worst thing about this book is the binding. The cover came off and I had to hot glue it to keep it together.

  2. I found this price guide to be a bit skimpy. I was not able to find any of my Lefton pieces listed. I was very disappointed. They also could put the listings in better order.

  3. The book is not too bad for a paperback price guide. But it seems the idea is to get all of her books. I couldn't find more than one reference to my Lefton collection. I look forward to seeing a whole-extensive book on Lefton China. Maybe writing books on different categories, such as dinnerware, figurines, etc.

  4. I found this book to be a very useful resource for adding to my Lefton collection. The pictures are good and the preliminary information on the company along with its trademarks is helpful. I question some of the values that are given, but the author explains her pricing difficulties in the preface.

The recommendation I would give for the next edition of this booklet would be to organize the listings in a better way. The categories are alphabetized but the listings in the categories are not organized either by number or description. The listing for figurines, for example, is very long and having to run through all the listing to find one item takes awhile. I also hope that the next book will be more inclusive and include all the pieces from all the patterns and not just a few selected.

In the meantime, I applaud the author for her efforts in putting together a much needed resource on this area of collecting that is becoming extremely popular.
