2 comments about Thaddeus Mosley: African American Sculptor.
- The fusion of art and music sets the tone for the fine examples of sculpture created by Thadeus Mosley. This short book(86 pgs) is a masterful presentation of a postal worker turned sculptor, complete with other sculpures by such masters as Isamu Noguchi and Brancusi who influenced him. The influences of these artists and African art is evident in the works of Mr.Mosley. The book gives tremendous insight into the trials and tribulations of this particular artist, beginning with his humble roots and concluding with his retirement from the post office and full dedication to his art. His works are superb creations, using various media to create sculptures that defify tradition. Thadeus has used avariety of means to express himself in art , often using wood that he acquired from city workers or stone that he collected from demolished buildings. His works in stone are impressive as well as his wood carvings. His leaving of chisel marks accentuates the rhythmn and texture of the mans soul. He often uses jazz to inspire him while he works and the results are marks left in the wood or stone that are highly rhythmic patterns that dance. This is an excellent book for anyone interested in understanding the mind of a sculptor, and seeing the path and works that define the experience. Undoubtably Thadeus Mosley is an American original contributing to the African- American experience with his tremendous art. Anyone interested in art, particularly sculpture will benefit from this book, I know I did. Easy to read the text can be read in one sitting and the photographs can be viewed over and over, they are truly marvelous and quite inspiring. Highly recommended for art enthuisiasts or those interested in the African-American experience.
- This book is incredible. An interesting saga of one man's journey through life an art. A must read for all aspiring artists. An inspiration for young African-Americans and people on a whole about the rewards of dedication, discipline and self-faith. The art at the end of the book is breathtaking. It is like two books in one. I really enjoyed it. I not only learned about art per se, I was enlighened of the trials and tribulations of the African-American experience. A must read!

1 comments about The Shipcarvers' Art: Figureheads and Cigar-Store Indians in Nineteenth-Century America.
- I collect figures. I have read the books that are used for reference. I have seen the exhibit that was chaperoned by Mr. Sessions (Sandwich,MA., NYC,NY & Baltimore,MD). I am a student of the art he describes! I was impressed by his scholarship, his easy east coast art scene style of writing, his photography/graphics, his hommage to Ms. Sanburn, Mr. Pendergast & Mr. Fried (I knew him). This is not a picture atlas. This is not a coffee table book. I would have liked to seen/read more especially regarding the social relevance of color race &c.(the folly of the time theirs & ours) but this is another matter! I RECOMMEND this book to all who treasure american sculpture. The vulgar artist is finally getting his place(WELL DONE Mr Sessions! What is next?).

5 comments about Woodcarving In The Scandinavian Style (Woodcarving).
- This book inspired me to start carving again. The history in the book as well as the great pictures of works by the masters of this style including Harley Refsal made this not only an interesting read but also an excellent how to guide.
- Anyone who wants to try their hand at figure carving...get this book!. It has a few pages giving a background behind this style of carving, but has an EXCELLENT step by step project in the back. I thought I could never do it; all the figures I have seen looked like it took someone years to learn the trade. This may be so but I was able to finish my first figure over about 3-4 days and everyone is astonished at what I have done. Seriously, this book is one of the best Ive seen. Its a "must-have".
- I have long wanted to learn how to carve, and jealously watched a friend develop this talent. He recommended this book to me. A weekend's worth of following the instructions in the book produced three carvings each a little better than the other. This instructive book also mixes the history of Scandinavian Carving along with rich color pictures of completed carvings. Take your wood working to another level. You to can create a masterpiece.
- This is the book I have been looking for! It clearly teaches step by step technique with GOOD photos. The many patterns are all easilly adaptable to whatever kind of character you wish to create. If you like to carve interesting characters, this is THE book!
- Harley's book leads off by providing a history of Norwegian
wood carving, he then provides a large number of examples
that represent not only his work but also the work of many
leading artists in this field of wood carving.
Harley then provides a step by step, easy to follow, lesson
on carving Oskar with over 80 pictures.
The final section of the book is a large number of patterns
that can be used to carve some of the characters highlighted
in the many high quality pictures included in the book.
This book will become one of the most used books in my
collection of wood carving books.

2 comments about Designed & Signed: '50S & '60s Glass, Ceramics & Enamel Wares by Georges Briard, Sascha Brasto (Schiffer Book for Collectors With Value Guide.).
- I am quite surprised to see that there are not more reviews on this fabulous book. Not only is it beautiful and chock full of fabulous photos and estimated values, but it seems to be the only solid reference for Georges Briard and his equally talented peers. Expect to find nearly every pattern that Georges Briard ever designed and also some wonderful photos and information on: Higgins, Sasha Brastoff, Marc Bellaire, and even a few photos towards the back for Couroc, Fred Press (one of my faves), Ned Harris, Gabor, Gay Fad, etc...I probably refer to this book every other day! A must have for the mid century collector and especially for the fan of Briard and his designs. Thank you, Leslie Pina, for putting this book together!
- This is the only book I have been able to find on George Briard glassware. Chapter 1, over 50% of the book is devoted to George Briard collectibles. Chapter 2, about 20%, is about Sascha Brastroff. Chapter 3, about 10%, is about Marc Bellaire. Chapter 4, about 15%, is about Higgins. Chapter 5, about 5%, contains more designers and a section showing all of the artists signatures. Each chapter includes the history of each designer. The pictures are absolutely fantastic and include a price range for each item. I have been able to identify and purchase many of the items included in this book. Obviously, this is one of my FAVORITE books. I highly recommend it to any one collecting 50s & 60s glass.

- Probably the most well researched book about Charles M. Russell. Even if one is not normally drawn to sculpture, this book could possibly be the one to change your mind. The subjects are varied, inspiring, and beautiful.

1 comments about Oriental Cloisonne and Other Enamels: A Guide to Collecting and Repairing.
- This book is a good basic reference source, as well as a good intro for beginning collectors. It discusses the various types of cloisonne, techniques, and symbols, plus has a wide variety of illustrations. It even gives instructions for repairing damaged pieces. There is also a price list, tho that changes so is not up to date. Highly recommended.
