1 comments about The Parthenon Frieze.
- I bought this book because I took part in an art restoration project. Although the author is a bit wordy, she does a good job in presenting the material. The historical context is moderately strong and I like the inclusion of photographs.

1 comments about Carl Faberge: Goldsmith to the Imperial Court of Russia.
- This book has 185 photographs of various pieces of Carl Faberge's studio's work. A majority of the photos are in color. The focus is on the pieces themselves with text accompanying each picture that describes the object and lists the materials used. There is additional text that describes the generic materials used and gives an overview of the studio and the process of enameling. It also discusses the general categories of objects that the studio produced. This book is excellent for someone who wants primarily to see pictures of Faberge's work and wants some additional background information.

4 comments about I Shock Myself: The Autobiography of Beatrice Wood.
- Being a potter and a Beato fan, I truly enjoyed the time I spent with this autobiography. I was fascinated by how her life unfolded from her relationships with those in art to her own creation of art. How her world which was largely centered around the men she knew, changed as she found herself in clay.
I loved how this story unfolded and I was sad when it ended.
- I am going to be honest and say what this autobiography meant to me.... Starting with her early days as an artist to an actress breaking from her mother's shell. To her associations with Duchamp,Roche,Varese,Reginald Pole,Krishnumarti and other well-known men. And it tells of the struggles she went through in paying the price to learn of life and her amazing stories in India,France..etc; were very interesting to read. I enjoyed her stories with the beloved Arensbergs' for they were very important in her life. Before this book I didn't have knowledge of most of the artists in her life. She has opened new doors! I laughed hysterically at her descriptions of her years with Pole and Steve. She is a riot!
An amazing woman really. This book will remain with me forever and I will read it again and again. For someone like myself can't beleve there is so much adventure in life. She died this spring at 105,in her heart 32. I would have loved to meet her.All I can do now is remember her and try to learn more about her life and art. I loved her and she is an inspiration to all humanity with her marvelious statements on the facts of life.Afterall, she lived 105 years and paid the price. A definate book to add to a collection for any Beato fan or curious book reader!
- As a potter, I'd hoped to learn more about her art. However, there were some gems to be found in the text. I really enjoyed the stories about several other famous people in her life. She is brutally honest in her opinions and I like that. On the downside... it was a bit too "socially conscious" in places, for my own taste. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will read more by her. I wrote a personal letter to her, regarding her book and she answered me promptly... twice! Great lady! Wonderful clay-artist! :-) An interesting read, for sure.
- Highly recommended, artist Beatrice Wood's autobiography, "I Shock Myself" gives the read a glimpse into her illustrious life and art. I could not put this book down

4 comments about Sanfords'Guide to McCoy Pottery.
- I never buy these guides for the price guides. This one has the price guide in the back of the book and in very small print. I discovered years ago that price guides were mainly for bragging rights: "I have this piece and it's worth umpty million dollars according to Sanford's". However they are good for relative value. And it would be a really good idea if more emphasis was placed on condition and it's effect on value. McCoy Pottery after all was mass produced and finding glaze pops, glazing defects and glazed over errors in production is just part of owning McCoy, but still the perfect piece is far more desirable than the imperfect, all else being equal.
Lots of good pictures and pictures of the bottoms of some pots-- oh, yes, this is very helpful because how items are finished on the bottom is some very valuable hints to who made it.
The only think I would like to see more of (given the fact that McCoy has become the target of fakers) is pictures of reproductions and fantasy pieces with the McCoy mark that are currently in circulation.
- this book tells you all the things you need to know about mcoy pottery
- This is the best book I have seen on McCoy pottery. It is very complete and has great pictures. I do not like the pricelist in the back of the book, alot of page turning needed. I copied the price pages to use while browsing the book. Highly recommended.
- This book is the most complete book written on McCoy pottery. Over 4,000 pictures referenced to line/type, a picture line finder, glossary of terms, complete index and table of contents, it is easy to use for the novice as well as the expert collector. A great cross referenced guide to all McCoy Items including 500 Cookie Jars, Kitchenware, Dinnerware, etc. A excellent in depth history of McCoy pottery from beginning to present, original catalog sheets, personal Quotes from Nelson McCoy. Absouletly the most you can get for your money. Truly a complete collectors guide.

1 comments about Colt engraving.
- This book is a classic among Firearms Engravers, and it well should be. However, for most people the poor quality of the photographs, mainly black and white, are worse than smoke pulls and it takes a fair knowledge of engraving and techniques to be able to distinguish exactly what the patterns are and where they go. R. L. Wilson is to be commended on this historic compilation, but it is not a coffee table book as Steel Canvas could be, this is a book that belongs above your engraving bench or beside the bed of a serious engraver. For beginners, Steel Canvas and Winchester Engraving are better choices, the former having many color plates, and the latter having black and white photos of much higher quality. I also reviewed the Winchester book and believe now that much of what turned me off was the quality of the photos and not the lack of the model 94. Compared to the Colt Engraving Book, the Winchester book shines. A book for serious engravers or Colt collectors, not for the layman -- for it is not a pretty coffee table book, it is a book for guests to ooooh and ahhhhh over, it is a tool, to be studied and scrutinized by the engraver. And the photos are of poor enough quality that some need intense study to unravel their mystery.

1 comments about Radiant Stones/Pierres Radieuses: Archaic Chinese Jades/ Jades Archaiques Chinois.
- This book provides excellent photographs and information about the individual items in the author's collection. As a collector myself, the variety of Neolithic pieces, the information presented and the detailed photography make this a great study aid to help anyone learn about the patination and stylistic traits of ancient Chinese jades. A very informative book, well worth the price.
