5 comments about The Artful Ribbon: Beauties in Bloom.

  1. Fast informative and to the point. A travel thru time with comprehensive and flawless instruction. THE RIBBON WORK BIBLE should be its name. Candace Kling does a masterful job of walking you thru the work of beautiful ribbon work. If you get no other book buy this one its 5* plus. I was totally enthralled by this book. I am experienced in ribbon work and it enhanced my knowledge. Having learned the art as an 11 year old it brought back great memories of me and My Grandmother making flowers of a bygone era.

  2. I have not found too many things I could duplicate in this book. This kind of ribbon art is a little more complicated than I expected.
It's still a nice book. A person more experienced with working ribbon would probably enjoy it more than I.

  3. I hsve not tried any of the projects yet but the directions are incredibly clear and the book is also beautifully illustrated. This is new to me but with the great instruction and stunning pictures, can't wait to begin creating these blooms.

  4. Great book that I would recommend to anyone wanting ideas to make flowers out of ribbon.

  5. This is the first time I've tried ribbon work and had no difficulty following the directions. It was so easy to understand what to do, and how to do the flowers. Mine all came out lovely at the end!

The illustrations are beautiful and inspiring and there are no set projects and directions as to which color/size of ribbon to use and how to put your finished flowers together, it will really work your imagination and creativity - I really like that aspect of the book! I also like her Ribbon Width formula (RW) better then if I was given a specific width of ribbon, because I can use any ribbon from my stash to make flowers out of.

There's nothing to stand in the way of your imagination here, yet you'll get enough guidence as a beginner to know what to do, what supplies to buy and what they look like! The only thing I had to research on the internet is the type of ribbons and where to buy them from (she has a list of suppliers at the back of the book but they are all mailing addresses, no websites because the book came out in 1996). It took only a short time to find suppliers on the net who sell a variety of good quality ribbons like Soft Edge: silk, velvet, pleated and hand dyed ribbons and Wire Edge: rayons in variegated, ombre, organdy. But this was only a small inconvenience.
I was sorry to see this book is out of print - buy a used copy like I did, you won't regret it!

5 comments about Ribbonwork The Complete Guide: Technique Guide for Making Ribbon Flowers and Trimmings.

  1. This book is hit and miss. It does not go into ribbon work very well. Not for a beginner or an experienced ribbon master. It needs to be more comprehensive and in detail. It is lacking sorely in content. It was literally a waste of time and money.

  2. I bought this book as a gift for my sister, and it is hard to give away! I am going to be buying one for myself as well, as this is an easy to follow, comprehensive book. The instructions are clear, even for someone with brainfog days like me. Each design builds on the last, and the ideas for putting it all together are useful, beautiful projects. If I had known that creating such beautiful ribbon work was this easy, I would have started a long time ago. Kudos on the spiral binding- it is so helpful to be able to lay the book flat next to you as you work!

  3. This book is amazing! It really is! Gives you loads of ideas and the step-by-step instructions of how to create the most amazing flowers and arrangements!!!

  4. This is a great book on ribbonwork. The diagrams are easy to follow and the
chapters are well organized. I've made some great arrangements. Loved the book!

  5. Instructions for making ribbon flowers are easy to follow with many diagrams and written instructions. Photographs give ideas for many flowers and ribbon types.

  1. Simple and easy to follow directions. Have been wanting a good 'bow' book for a while.

  2. this is a great book easy to do bows for someone like me who has had no experence.

  3. I like this book, it is what I spected, good images and pictures, good explanation and good price!

  4. ...mmmm What can I say, I am not very happy with it, I certainly have seen better books, lets say if you can keep looking for a creative bow book, keep loking... this is like a last option book... ( for me!)....

  5. A great book, I have learnt a lot from it. I plan to use it with my students at school to enhance their craft projects.

5 comments about Elegant Ribbonwork: 24 Heirloom Projects for Special Occasions.

  1. I received the book in a timely manner and it was in very good condition. I like to collect ribbon instruction books--especially ribbon embroidery books.

  2. I have all of Helen Gibb's books. They are beautiful to look at, as well as excellent tools for learning. Making beautiful ribbon flowers is a very satisfying hobby.

  3. I always read the reviews before buying and almost didn't purchase this book because of the one bad review. I am so glad that I got this book. It is fabulous from beginning to end. The pictures and projects are virtually stunning. I already have Helen's book: Ribbonwork, the Complete Guide. It has a lot of illustrations while this book opens up your mind to vast possibilities. It is worth the purchase if not just to gaze in wonderment.

  4. This little book holds many, many instructions and pictures to show you how to make a wide variety of ribbons. It covers miniature ribbons, full size ribbons and a large offering of uses. The photos inside the book are informative and beautiful. There are many photos of historical uses of ribbon.

  5. This book is terrific. It gives you very clear instructions on how to make gorgeous flowers. I saw Ms. Gibb on Carol Duval's show and wanted to learn the technique and I am so glad that I ordered her books.

  1. I received my book quickly and in great condition. I'm always pleased with service from Amazon.

  2. I love all of her books however this is a favorite. Beautiful work and wonderfully illustrated to easily create for yourself.

  3. Just a wonderful challenging project. I finished the RES project and this one is a must companion piece.

  4. This is a GREAT book whether you are a beginner or a more advanced stitcher. With all due respect, I must disagree with Cynthia McCorkle's review. The book is quite different from the earlier one. Here are a few techniques not included in the earlier book: the flowers are different, the moth's wings, the organza petals of the Poppy, the silk petals of the Protea and the Waterlily, the barbola work on the Strelitzia flower, a new way to make the Roses and the loose petals of the Cosmos flower( on the cover of the book). I learned a lot of new techniques in this book. I have not only used some of the ideas to embellish my many needlepoint projects, but also enhanced my handmade greeting cards and my scrapbooks. I really like the clarity of the instructions, too!

  5. I purchased this book for a present for a friend, who is a vastly more experienced embroiderer, than myself. But first, I had the delight of looking at the book myself,I was bowled over by the delightful mixter of animals and plants, and only wish I could be that skilled. When I gave it to my friend she was equally delighted so you have 2 satisfied custumers.Jillian

4 comments about Making Ribbon Leis & Other Gifts of Aloha.

  1. This book was part of a bundle package. I love the ideas they gave for all the many different leis (Especially the money ones) :). Thanks.

  2. I own both the 1st and 2nd book from these authors. I've made 4 different leis from the first book, and am starting to get a feel for the techniques. The instructions really could be better, but they've been adequate for my needs. It would be nice if the authors could have included more step-by-step close-up photographs, and as already suggested in another review, more sources for the supplies and materials. (In my case, I've just substituted regular needles and nylon fishing line for the special needles and thread). I was able to find the recommended brand of ribbon from an online source (www.jkmribbon.com), for anyone who's having trouble locating the stuff. Since the book doesn't include difficulty ratings for each design, I can only suggest that the reader look closely at the instructions, and choose his/her first project carefully. I'm not a serious crafter, but I've been able to create really impressive leis on my first attempts. Since these books are about the only ones dealing with this type of project, I feel they're worth the reasonable purchase price.

  3. I bought both books 1 & 2 and I really love them the instruction is uncomplicated & easy to follow. However finding the supplies you need (if you don't live in Hawaii) is not easy!

I was very frustrated searching online, I went to craft store after craft store & couldn't find beeding needles that looked like what they had a picture of, with a magnifying glass I was able to get the number off the package in the picture. I only found one place that sold these needles online (but was thrilled!)

I still am unable to locate the Aoyama Tape (all purpose double sided tape used to join ribbons) my searches for "Aoyama" don't come up with any kind of tape.... it would be great to know if any 2 sided tape will work?

Same with the nylon beeding thread again I'm not able to locate what is in the picture I'm assuming size matters as it must fit though the eye of the beeding needle but no size is listed.

I'm also having a hard time finding the specific embroidery needles in the sizes listed...

It would have been EXTREMELY HELPFUL to have more information about the supplies listed. The only store listed is in Hawaii you can't order online but you can mail order. The address is listed but not the phone number.

The only other help was call you craft stores???? yeah have fun with that one I visited craft stores & they had no idea what I was talking about.

I really can't wait to start making lei's & hope that someday in the next few months I can finally find & receive all the supplies I need!

The books though are beautiful & the Leis magnificent!!!!

  4. I belong to a hula halau and recently we were each required to make ribbon leis for a fundraiser. I thought this book was very useful in instructing me on how to make more unique kinds of leis versus the most simple and common technique. The designs included in this book are wonderful and made my leis bestsellers! Using your creativity, you can use different types of ribbons to create interesting textures and looks. Great pictures, easy instructions, all around good book!

5 comments about Heirloom Ribbonwork.

  1. Helen Gibb is the best at reintroducing the Victorian Art of Ribboncraft and offering practical projects for today.

I've actually made some roses using Helen's instructions. This is a very good introductory book into making ribbon flowers.

  2. I came across this book at a local craft shop and quickly became enthralled by the beautiful projects. I have never done ribbonwork before nor even thought about doing it. But once I saw this book I very much wanted to learn!

This book covers how to get started and has many different levels of projects. I am going to start small with one simple flower and learn as I go along. Directions seem simple and easy to follow.

The photographs in the book are so beautiful, I like to sit back and just flip through them enjoying the era of days gone by. Also, the author (Helen Gibb) has a wonderful source guide in the back which includes her own website.

  3. Helen Gibb has once again prepared a book that not only teaches the art of ribbonwork, but is an eye appealing treasure, blending directions for creating ribbonwork pieces of today with those of the past. Beautiful examples of past treasures have been painstakingly arranged and photographed. The book is enjoyable to peruse just to marvel at the beautiful antique pieces she displays. Her love of the antique handwork is evident and her work is tasteful and eye appealing. Helen's first ribbonwork book was beautiful and her new book is another example of her high quality and standard.

  4. I have been pouring over this book ever since I received my autographed copy. This book is a must for anyone interested in silk ribbon embroidery or silk ribbon embellishment. Not only are the instructions clear and concise, but the book is dripping with photos of vintage and modern works alike. The variety of projects is sure to meet everyone's needs, with the photos providing endless ideas for using the techniques. Helen has created a masterpiece in this book.

  5. This book is really one of the best I have read about ribbon work. I do have Helen's other book on Ribbon Flowers also.Just could not wait for her Ribbonwork. I looked it over cover to cover and want to make everything in the book. She has a wide variety of heirlooms to make and they are fantastic. I love the Victorian era and this book is truly inspirational.Helen's teaching certainly makes it easy to make heirlooms as a gift or for yourself. They are absolutely magnificent!

5 comments about Folded Flowers: Fabric Origami with a Twist of Silk Ribbon.

  1. Great book full of lots of possibilities. I used some of her techniques for a small wall hanging - not even asian in theme. The folded flowers give a lovely three-dimensional look to any project.

  2. Item being reviewed

Folded Flowers: Fabric Origami with a Twist of Silk Ribbon

  3. This is exactly what I needed to complete a quilt I am working on. I wanted to include some flowers in a pineapple log cabin made in batik to give more dynamism to the end result. The projects in the book are easy to follow, magnificient and have that oriental touch but which can easily be included / adapted in more standard pieces of work. It is a real pleasure also to glance through the pages.

  4. The ladies in my quilting group went crazy over this book and the new techniques it showed them. It has 24 original three-dimensional flower designs in fabric and silk ribbon. You learn to make a pompom dahlia, a lily, kalanchoe, hollyhock, China aster, an Australian waratah, passion flower, sweet pea, cockscomb, malaleuca, and others. She shows each flower in a finished project with detailed instructions to make the small quilt.
There are also patterns for six purses so you can make your own elegant evening bags or give them as gifts.
The steps are show in drawings with color so it is easy to see the folding and which side you are working with.
The techniques taught are appliqué, Japanese sashiko stitching, beading and embellishment, all-in-one backings and borders, and others.

  5. Each one has brought succulent abundance of devine offerings to feed one's creativity. As a watercolorist the exciting world of color has been understood. Now within the world of Fabrics, Kumiko has illustrated wondrous exciting ways again with color.
She calls upon us to open our eyes observing the natural beauty found around us..our gardens, nature. Create your reactions with colors combinations design lingering inside yourself. It is inspiring to browse over and over each of her books. One seeks beauty and is over whelmed turning each page.

4 comments about Ribbon Trims (Embellishment Idea Books).

  1. good condition. item as described. great book for
learning to make trims for dresses. good ideas

  2. As a new to ribbon embellishments person I found this book very well presented. The coil binding allows the book to lay flat when following instructions. The written descriptions and drawings were clear and easy to follow. I liked the way the author rated each of the trims..easy, intermediate and challenging. She also make some suggestions for how to use each of the trims. The one thing that would have helped me was to have pictures of the applications. I would recommend this book for those interested in ribbonwork and in sewing generally.

  3. since seeing some of candace kling's masterpieces in a threads' publication, i have been fascinated by what can be done with ribbons. i have a few other ribbon trim books, but they don't come near this one in terms of variety of techniques and quality of directions for ribbon trim. and its much cheaper than many other books that offer less.

there are no ribbon flowers here, which is fine with me, since ribbon flowers are well covered in many other books. this book offers smocked, gathered, folded and looped linear trims, the kind that can turn a department store hat into something unique, or make a dress stand out, or give pillows a custom-upholstered air, just to dash off a few of the possiblities.

the photographs not only give really clear pictures of the finished products (not a universal characteristic of textile books), they are very well compposed (and amusing, like the illustration that combines a handmade ribbon trim with microchips). the directions are very good, not only for the experienced crafter, but even for the person who has never picked up a needle.

some of the techniques might even work well for wrapping packages. i can just imagine the effect of christmas presents trimmed with some of the quicker types under the tree.

    excellent book, excellent price.

  4. I just got this book yesterday. Stayed up late going through it. It is well laid out, easy to follow instructions, great illustrations of the steps in making the trim and color photos of the finished result are inspriational. Spiral binding is great as well. If you are looking for different ways to trim clothing or household sewing projects, get this book.
