5 comments about Incubation of Reptile Eggs: Basics, Guidelines, Experiences.

  1. This book undertakes a huge task. Basic incubation information is all there, but when it comes to breaking things down based on lineage, species coverage is terribly lop-sided.

Snake eggs scarcely get a page of specific coverage, with pythons getting about that much again. Leopard geckos and fat-tailed geckos are not distinguished from one another or from other gecko species (which is suprising considering the many temperature-dependent effects leopards can experience during incubation), while day geckos and a few other groups get their own respective sections. The groups of turtles that are addressed seem unbalanced. Monitors can be notoriously difficult to incubate, and are not covered in enough detail.

There is an appendix that lists known incubation parameters for many species - I don't know of this information being previously available in any book aimed at pet keepers.

Overall, most everyone can pick up something from this book. For a hardback of its size and content, it is well-priced. Your reptile rearing library won't be near complete without "Reptilian Incubation" (Deeming, 2004), but the price and academic nature of that title will regrettably deter many, despite the fact that its content warrants it to be much sought after - moreso than "Incubation of Reptile Eggs."

  2. great book. It is a must for reptile keepers wanting to know about reptile egg incubation

  3. I bought this book as a present for my boyfriend who has been keeping reptiles (mostly snakes) for about 13 years and recently decided to get into breeding. He already knows a lot, but on more than one occasion mentioned to me how this book contained some things he didn't already know and help him build his own incubator and make the right choices on supply materials.

  4. This was just the information I needed.

    Thanks

  5. Incubation of Reptile Eggs is a scientific account that collects available information and experience from a wealth of experts concerning the proper incubation of reptile eggs, knowledge that is vital to the success of captive breeding programs that are one defense against species extinction. Charts, full-color photographs, and technical details spell out the crucial importance of temperature, humidity, and special care that must be taken for various species (for example, monitor lizards eat their own eggs). A superb, in-depth resource especially for herpetologists and reptile caretakers.

2 comments about Designer Reptiles and Amphibians: Advice on purchase and selective breeding of color morphs that display unusual patterns.

  1. Although Bartlett and Bartlett have published some decent books on reptiles and amphibians, I find several of them seem rushed, and full of errors. Designer Reptiles and Amphibians is one of these.

The book contains a panoply of errors, such as poorly used examples and mislabelled photos. The accurate parts of the text are decently written, but if you are not already familiar with genetics and the species you're reading about, the mistakes may be hard to catch.

All in all, this book is a waste of money unless you want some nice pictures of some attractive colour morphs.

  2. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting an introduction to the amazing variations within different species of reptiles and amphibians that have appeared in the past few years. As well as specific information on many species it includes explanations of the terms commonly used to describe variants. It is well-written, friendly and accessible and at the same time packed with information. The many color photos show some magnificent animals at their best. I highly recommend this book!

5 comments about General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons (The Herpetocultural Library Series).

  1. what do you expect...this book was written by a man who breeds bearded dragons and it is a book about bearded dragons. It is a wonderful book and tells you everything you need to know about keeping a bearded dragon whether you are breeding them or not. I personally own a 1 year old dragon, and this has been like the bible to me. Whenever something is wrong i consult this book and it will always have the answer you need. All the other books are written by herpotologists who have never actually owned, bred, or loved a bearded dragon. This book is amazingly helpful and comes from a person who knows what he is doing. I would recommend it to anyone who is planning on owning and loving a bearded dragon.

  2. I don't like this book at all, the authors only writes about keeping the bearded dragons in big outdoor vivariums, and not about having just 1-3 bearded dragons as pets.

Very little information about feeding, housing and everything you really want to know. The authors also doesn't seem to think about the bearded dragons as pets, to cuddle with and have fun with, but only as something you can breed.

I almonst never read or look in this book, and I regret that I bought it.

I rekommend Liz Palikas book "Your Bearded Dragon's Life" and the book "The guide to a owning a BD" by David Zoffer and Tom Mazorlig instead!

  3. This is a very through book on the care and maintenance of Bearded Dragons. It is excellent for the beginer lizard keeper. I highly recommend this book if you want to take good care of your Bearded Dragon(s).It contains information on their diet, vivarium design, and other very useful information. It is one of the most reliable reptile books I have read.

  4. This book is amazing!! I bought it about two weeks before my parents bought me a bearded dragon. It told me everything i need to know. It tells you everything about making terrariums and what to feed them. It also has sections on breeding and general information on the different species. This is a must buy if you are planning to raise a bearded dragon.

  5. I bought this book when my parents bought me a baby bearded dragon. this has everything you need to know about raising dragons. it tells you all the feeding instructions and it also has an extensive list of diseases and ailments and there respective symptoms. it tells you all about how to create a good terrarium. it also has information on breeding and overall care of the dragons. this is an amazing book and i would recommend it to anyone that is looking to buy a bearded dragon.

5 comments about Bettas.

  1. I agree with the other reviewers. This book is great for breeders and it is interesting, but holds little educational value for someone who just wants to improve the life of their betta pet. I was disappointed.

  2. This book is definetly not for begginers. It has a lot of technical information that is virtually useless to to the begginer and average pet owner. I'm sure I would give it a 5 star rating if I were a breeder, but I'm not. Save your money and look for another book if you are a begginer to keeping Bettas.

  3. While this book is labled the "complete pet owner's manual" it does not deal with the practicalities of owning a betta. As a person who is a new owner looking for the basics, this book was too academic and had too much infomation. I did enjoy reading the history behind the betta fish and that was about it. This book is great for someone looking to breed and keep and sell bettas, but for us humble pet owners it does not give the needed basic information for daily care.

  4. This wonderful book has heaps of information about the various bubblenesting and mouthbrooding betta species groups. It covers the selection of bettas, their housing (the 2001 edition has a chapter on Tanks for Bettas), feeding, breeding, genetics (covering stuff like Betta Genes and the Punnet Square), as well as the prevention, identification and treatment of common betta diseases (environmental, chemical and infectious). It is indeed a great source of in-depth information about bettas and a complete pet owner's manual.

  5. This is a pretty book: lots of gorgeous color photos of gorgeous Siamese fighting fish ("Bettas") and glossy pages. That's its main, and only, selling point.

Unfortunately, the info contained is mainly academic filler which is badly organized so that it's difficult to skim through and find the more practical bits, such as: 1. how often and how much to feed these fish, 2. how a Betta would do if mixed in with other fish in a large aquarium (answer: badly), 3. how often the water should be changed if a Betta is kept in a small filtration-less container of 1 gallon or less, 4. most common types of commerical food and which ones are better, etc. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

Thankfully, Petsmart has a liberal return policy...this one's going back pronto!

5 comments about Guppies, Mollies, and Platys (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This book had lots of good information on live bearers. I think it's an excellent source to start out with. If you are looking for very specific information, this may not be the book for you. I was really looking for some Platy specific requirements that don't necessarily include breeding, and other than a short paragraph, there wasn't hardly any information tuned especially for Platys. That being said, It's a great starting place for breeding live bearers. The pictures of Guppies & Mollies were lovely. The fish illness discriptions were well written. But you should not use this as your sole source of information on these types of fish.

  2. This book was helpful, but did not have as much on Mollies as I hoped. It still is packed with lots of good information.

  3. This book was helpful for me, as I am learning how to breed and care for mollies, guppies, and platys. It was useful in identifying and treating diseases, perfecting my tank, and recognizing the sexes and different types of live bearing fish. The photos are also spectacular

  4. If you are a new fish keeper don't buy this book for the setup tips. If you are looking for a book about live-bearers the sections about specific species are good and can be helpful but the other sections on care and aquarium setup are lacking.
I would suggest a more comprehensive book that can be used as they advance through the hobby. I've seen several more comprehensive guides to get someone started, and I've found the Aquarium Atlas series by Baensch to be helpful in species selection and even the sections on setup and equipment are good.
    CONCLUSION:
Buy this book for the info on live bearers, if you want info on other aspects of fishkeeping as well, look elsewhere.

  5. I am an amature, first time fish owner and I found this book to have everything I needed to raise healthy happy guppies, mollies and platys. I would highly recommend it. The author explains everything in easy to understand terms. You'll have no trouble raising your fish to be as healthy and happy as mine.

1 comments about We Can't Stay Together for the Dogs: Doing What's Best for Your Dog When Your Relationship Breaks Up.

  1. Written for people breaking up that have dogs together or for those who have friends and family in the situation, WCSTFTD tackles tough issues with the best interest of the canine(s) in mind. After all, it's not the dog's fault and it's hard on them, too. The author uses her own divorce experience and certified positive reinforcement dog training methods to guide you through topics such as dog custody, finances, behavior problems and fun ways to bond again with your pup. It's a book that fits a wide range of circumstances and highly recommended for anyone who needs a resource to make the best of a breakup involving your other best friend -- your dog.

2 comments about Russian Tortoises (Complete Herp Care).

  1. I really enjoyed this book!
We have a new Russian Tortoise and needed a beginner's guide of how to house, feed and care for our tortoise. The pictures are wonderful in the book and the author took the time to point out different thoughts, controversial ways and the "why's" of caring for your tortoise when it's not in its natural habitat. I would recommend this book to those wanting to know more about their new pet. My children enjoyed the pictures and the chapters are thorough, yet not exhaustive. For the family needing more than what the pet store gives you, this book is the perfect solution.

  2. I thought this book would be more detailed in scope than it was. In fact, I think the website http://www.russiantortoise.org/ is in some ways more informative than this book. I would still recommend purchasing it if you want to absorb as many viewpoints as you can. I feel the author was writing a primer, and not an extensive book on the subject of tortoises. This would be an excellent book for the newbie to tortoises, but for one who has cruised the internet on the tortoises, it may be a disappointment, but it is still worth owning.

5 comments about The Guide to Owning Piranhas.

  1. Before I got my Piranha, I bought this book. This book helped me decide what size tank I would get, helped me with the chemical levels that would be an ideal home for the fish, I learned about what they like to eat, and mor

In February, for mt 12th birthay, I got a Red-Bellied Piranha. This book has helped me mantain the tank and keep my fish alive. It is now December and my fish is still alive and is about 5 1/2 inches. The book is a must for any Piranha owner.

  2. What a waste of money. You'd better of reading an article or an expert advise on the Internet than reading the entire book. Which adds to my frustration is the extra cost I encountered on shipping the book internationally.

It has absolutely neither a meaningful new peace of information nor a serious know how.

  3. i first got this book b4 i got the fish and found it to be most informative with good pictures and information contained threw out a good buy for any person wanting or thinking about keeping these fish... it is a book that is serious in the right places but not a real professional book like some that i have read

  4. 64 pages Over 10 Section (What Are Piranhas? , Aquaria , Understanding Them , Feeding , The Setting Up , The Truth , Breeding , Species , Keeping Piranhas Happy and Healty) . The pictures are extra ordinary high quality , very easy to read .

  5. Good information, excellent photos, easy to read. I was expecting a upto date discussion about breeding and information on feeding (other than gold fish). I was disappointed
