2 comments about Herp Help.

  1. Interesting little book divided into five sections, frogs and toads, salamanders, turtles, lizards, and snakes. Each section picks a few species (seemingly at random) and concisely discusses their biology, behavior, and how to house and feed them. A few common species and a few exotic species are included in each section. The information provided is useful and the book is well illustrated. It is, however, by no means complete. Many important animals are missing and the information included for the animals represented is basic.

If you're thinking about buying a snake, frog, salamander, lizard or turtle and you don't know which to buy, this book will certainly give you some ideas. What is particularly helpful is that the author warns about which animals are likely to be aggressive and which have special care needs. For example, if you considering buying a turtle, you can browse the pretty pictures and pick out some turtles that you like. Then you can quickly read the text to find which ones are easy to keep and safe to handle. Or, if you have some experience with turtles, you might want to buy one of the more difficult breeds. It will even give you some tips on caring for your new pet.

If you are looking for information about a pet you already have, this probably isn't the book for you. Unless you are lucky, your pet isn't in it. Still, it is an interesting book and you can pick up some facts about reptiles and amphibians if you are so inclined to do so.

  2. An incredibly interesting book that's easy and fun to read. Some of the material seems to be aimed at beginners but some is for those who are experienced, so just about anybody interested in this subject will enjoy this book. Definitely one of the best--and the photos are also extraordinary.

3 comments about Proper Care of Guppies (Tw-133).

  1. Quite simply this is the most important book any guppy fancier can get. Stan imparts his extensive knowledge of guppy breeding andshowing in a clear conciseand informative manner. No pseudoscientific claptrap here - just the accumulated wisdom aquired as the top in his class. Read it

  2. This is an excellent book for both beginning and advanced aquarists alike. Stan's book is a very comprehensive guide to breeding, raising, and the proper care of show quality Guppies. He covers the various techniques used by himself and other top Guppy breeders to develop and maintain different strains of Guppies. The information contained in this book is very thorough and the pictures of his Guppies and those of other breeders, are outstanding. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in breeding quality fish.

  3. The author, Stan Shubel, uses the 30 years worth of guppy raising experience to bring to the reader a very down to earth, commonsense approuch to raising, caring for and showing this marvelous and intriguing tropical fish, the Guppy. Stans ability to take the everyday care of the guppy and put it in a sensable and fun light make the book easy reading. In particular, the breeding and genetic subjects are laid out for the common hobbyist. No Genetic degree is required for understanding. A very special part of the book is dedicated to the care and raising of Show Fish. It appears that Stan is now ready to share his inside secrets of raising and breeding quality Show Guppies. This is a must read by any serious guppy breeder and a delightfully easy read for the casual and curious hobbyist. Jim Gourlie,(moneyman@ncweb.com)Geneva,Ohio

1 comments about Caring for Green Iguanas: A Complete Authoritative Guide.

  1. This book really isn't that bad, but not very complete as the title suggests. There isn't a whole lot of detail with the dietary needs of iguanas...and it suggested occasional pinky mice and crickets. Animal protein kills iguanas. Iguanas fed animal protein average life span is around 8 years, while iguanas fed no animal protein live well past 12 years in upwards of 20 years! If you want a "comlete and authoritative guide" by James Hatfield's Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual and research iguana care on the internet.

1 comments about Snakes: Keeping & Breeding Them in Captivity.

  1. This book has nowhere near enough information. It is meant for first-time snake owners, but does not supply them with all the facts. It also barely has any information on snake species. However, it has nice pictures and a good snake disease section, hence the three-star rating. A much better book on the subject is Breeding and Keeping Snakes, by Dr. Dieter Schmidt.
