5 comments about Red-Eared Sliders: From the Experts at Advanced Vivarium Systems.

  1. The information in this book is all accurate. The author clearly knows what he is talking about. Unfortunatley there isn't much detail about certain aspects of owning a red-eared slider such as how much to feed it, issues of egg binding, behavior, how they process sensory input (vision and smell)etc. I was actually able to find more information on certain websites after doing a Google search. Not worth the money.

  2. I have used this book for a couple of years now sort of as my "Bible" on raising my slider turtles, thanks to it I was able to sucessfully raise a hatchling & make upgrades to my setup to meet the needs of 3 growing turtles. It covers a broad spectrum of just about everything you need to know from housing to feeding to breeding. This is just a great book!!

  3. All you ever wanted to know about this particular yet popular pet. Easy to read, all topics covered, small, cheap, get it.

  4. I like this book because it easy reading.

  5. This is a good basic book about red-eared sliders. You will learn details about sex identification and varieties, environmental needs, diseases, feeding, and even breeding. The author does a good job of describing the types and sizes of enclosures needed, water filtration, basking and light needs, and temperature. The need to have an easy system of water cleaning is emphasized. There is some discussion about recognizing symtoms of sickness and how to solve the problem usually either through changes in the environment or diet. Even with a book such as this, caring for turtles would definitely be somewhat of a learn as you go endeavor. This book can get one started but careful observation and fine tuning is required.

4 comments about Betta Care (Quick and Easy).

  1. Betta Care is a well written book with excellent pictures of "Siamese Fighting Fish." If you have only one source of information at hand, this will serve you well.

Unfortunately, there is another source of information that will serve you well at a much smaller cost - the Internet. Though this book is a handy way to get all the information in one place, you can get the same info (as well as all the good pictures) on many different websites.

My recommendation: If you are the type of person who likes to have the info in black and white in front of them, buy this book. If you're the type of person who spends a lot of time on the web, get the same info for free.

  2. The book had a lot more information for breederds than for beginners,
but the information that a beginner could use, was very good.

  3. This book is exactly what it says, Quick and Easy. The chapter on white spot was a real life saver for our betta. We followed the instructions and quess what? It worked.

  4. This is an awesome book that tells you how to take care of bettas. It tells you information on feeding, housing, ilnesses, and different types of bettas. Bettas are much easier to care for if you read this astonishing informational book about bettas. This book even helped me cure my betta from an illness called Ich. Buy this low-price book if you plan to own a betta.

2 comments about Uromastyx: Plus Other Common Agamids (Herpetocultural Library).

  1. this book proved to be very informative and was a great resource for uromastyx care.

  2. I have worked in a lab where we take care of various herps and this genus is one of the ones I was personal charged with. We had other literature including other breeder information and this sums up as well as clarifies most of the information. It is well organized, gives a good history and care guidelines as well as helps someone looking for one of these lizards as a pet choose a healthy specimen. It was wonderful pictures which also demonstrate the appearance and the housing. It is also written to the average person's level and doesn't talk down to the reader. It also has minor information on other Agamids and what defines them into that family of lizards.

5 comments about Tortoises and Box Turtles Complete Owner's Manual.

  1. This book is good as a very basic introduction to Box Turtles and Tortoises. The pictures are good and some of the advice on certain species is worth while.

However, there is some very bad information included. As anexample, increasing the humidity for a Star Tortoise. This advice will secure large vet bills for you from the respiratory issues your Star will certainly develop. Another is keepng your tortoise in a glass aquarium or glass sided enclosure.

I doubt the auther has any real-life experience with many of the tortoise species he mentions in this book. If he did, most will be quite ill or no longer with us.

  2. This book is really good for beginner. The high quality picture significantly pushing to own a tortoise.
Clear and straightforward presentation for easy understand, although your are very beginner, you can successfully get the basic knowledge.

However, you cannot find detail information in this book because it gives general information only. Actually, if you already feed your tortoise more than half year, then this book is not suitable to you.

  3. This book is really good for beginner. The high quality picture significantly pushing me to own a tortoise.

  4. I've read a lot of turtle care books, and this is one of my faves! It's very colorful and entertaining. The author knows his subject and is passionate about it. The guide to reading a turtle's body language was really unique. It was like someone else finally realized there was so much more to keeping turtles as pets. :)

  5. An illustration is worth a thousand words and the combination of pictures, illustrations and practical knowledge makes this an excellent book for both the new pet owner and serious hobbyists.

I recommend books to new pet owners on a regular basis at our web site. Hartmut Wilke's books are amoung our favorite suggested references for general care. This book is no exception.

5 comments about Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry.

  1. This text is an excellent resource for zoo animal vets or small animal vets that are presented with amphibians. The book is very factual in nature, but the authors also offer their own clinical experience. Because their is a dearth of veterinary information on the treatment of amphibians, this is a welcome addition to the veterinary literature

  2. A must book for any enthusiasts or veterinarian. It is the first serious book on amphibians medicine. It also covers some interesting chapters on captive care and rearing.

  3. I bought this book when I had a sick newt on my hands and wanted to get some deeper insights as to what may be wrong. Even the vets I took my pet to were mostly unable to help much, so I tried to take matters into my own hands, at least this way when I went to the vet, I'd be able to bring some ideas and understandings to the table. Let me add that I am a science teacher, so I am no dummy with respect to scientific understanding, but my background is NOT in biology, which is what's essential in the understanding of this book. Also, the book is not meant for "lay people", such as myself, but rather veterinary or medical students. Now I see why. The book was very expensive, which I didn't mind if it had helped, and very difficult to underdstand. The book had very little information with respect to newts in general and rather focused on other amphibians such as frogs. There were very few pictures or chapters/paragraphs even devoted to newts. I wish there had been a copy of the book in a library for me to check out beforehand, as I would not have purchased the book if I did. I'm sure for a vet student the book is probably wonderful, but for someone with no biology background trying to search for some specific answers, it fell way short.

  4. Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.

  5. Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry. Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences. Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques. Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.

Recognizing that the understanding of veterinary medicine is facilitated by illustrations, Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry includes 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables.

We highly recommend this book to any individual, institution or organization that works with captive or wild amphibians: veterinary clinicians, comparative pathologists, veterinary students, herpetologists, herpetoculturists, zoos, aquariums, biomedical research facilities, and libraries.

2 comments about Poison Dart Frogs (Reptile and Amphibian Keeper's Guide).

  1. A wonderful book that gives the beginner a place to start from in their search for knowledge of Poison Dart Frogs. Sure there are plenty of other books that are more in depth than this one, but they usually cost a lot more and this book packs quite a bit in it for it's size! This book will help those who are thinking about trying to keep Poison Dart Frogs and it is a "no nonsense" book so it will tell you that these frogs require more "work" than others. This is helpful because most people will "impulse buy" pets without thinking about how diificult it might to care for them. Also, this book is a great introduction to learning about these frogs in the wild. Overall, you can't go wrong with buying this book and it won't "break the bank" for those who can't afford a more in depth book on these frogs.

  2. A very basic book. Not as current as some others, but a good first book to read if you are considering going into the dart frog keeping hobby.

3 comments about Discus Breeding for Beginners.

  1. the book's title lacks connection with the content which spends little time on the topic of breeding. Generally the book is excellenet clearly wiritten and useful but fails to deliver on the title.

  2. I just purchased this book along with 0812046692 Discus Fish by Thomas Giovanetti, I found this book was full of great colorful picutures but did not give me very much information. Specifically one of my disus was sick - I just purchased him - the Discus Fish book helped me treat my fish this book was useless. I also found some of the information was exactly the opposite of what I was reading in all other books???

  3. The first,I want send greeting to Jack Wattley for his magnificent, excellent book for all beginers.
