2 comments about Day Geckos.

  1. While this book is better than many of TFH's other Reptile and Amphibian care books it still isn't all that great. The information is farily limited some of the few species recieving "in-depth coverage" are not at all appropriate for beginers. There is nothing in here that isn't in the book by Sean McKowen and Phillipe Devilj-howeveryouspellit.

  2. This is a great starter book for the beginning Day Gecko keeper. This book has many large full color glossy pictures that show the beauty and diversity of these brightly colored geckos. "Day Geckos" covers general information, housing, feeding, breeding, diseases, and species accounts. In many sections there is some over generalization of information, but for the beginning gecko keeper this may be helpful to get a basic overview. There are only 13 species accounts which cover only a small fraction of the over 66 species and subspecies of Phelsuma Day Geckos. Several of the accounts cover species that are extremely rare that most beginning Day Gecko keepers would never see or keep. Overall a great book for every gecko keeper's library.

1 comments about Lizards Rare & Common (Success with a Reptile Pet).

  1. One of the better TFH books, this one has actually been updated and has photos in it that don't look like they were taken in 1975! It's a small book that tries to cover basic care, breeding and common problems of quite a few of the more common species of captive kept reptiles, which means it can't get too in-depth on any one in particular.

This would be a good book for someone to read BEFORE they purchase a reptile, it would help them decide (based on the descriptions of the lizards and the type of care and housing they require) which type was right for them.

The one thing that really bugs me about TFH publications is that they of course use every book as an advertising opportunity to promote their own products, which usually aren't worth diddly compared to other brands. Sure, the price is cheap.. and it really shows in the quality of their products (including most of their books).

4 comments about Eat This Bug: A Guide to Invertebrate Live Foods for Reptiles and Amphibians.

  1. I found this book listed among recommend books on the Sithsonian Natural History Museum site. There are very few books on reptile care recommended by the Sithsonian. This was the only one dealing with live foods.
It is a small book, only 62 pages. I would like to see an expanded version. I was unable to find the information I needed anywhere else. For anyone raising invertebrates and insects for feeding pets, this book will be very useful.

  2. At $9.95 I thought this book was way overpriced. It is 8.5 x 5.5 inches, a paperback with stapled spine. Only 58 pages of content, and each of those is half printed with text. Black and white illustrations are few and of low quality. Information is only rudimentary, but accurate. I would recommend those interested in this topic to look anywhere else!

  3. This book is a simple guide to finding and keeping live foods for herp pets. A good source of info about suppliers of hard to find items in the appendix. If you want to raise your own insects, this is a good place to start.

  4. Eat This Bug was a huge disappointment. It's main fault is that it contains very little detailed information. There are some nice pictures in this book, a list of insects that are suitable for feeding reptiles and amphibians and not much else. There is no discussion of reptile and amphibian nutrition, little information on how to care for your insects once you get them home, little or no information on culturing your own insects, and no information about the suitability of different insects as food for different reptiles and amphibians. The book is so simplistic, it seems to be written for children. It was a big waste of my time and money.

1 comments about Terrarium Animals from A to Z (Compass Guides).

  1. While this guide does not go indepth with each reptile and each terrarium type, it does provide all the information that you need as you look into setting up and maintaining a terrarium and selecting reptiles. The reptile information is broken down with easy to understand symbols and includes reptile characteristics, diet, behavior, times of day they are most active, level of difficulty for the reptile's care, terrarium size, type, substrate, temperature, and other habitat items that are needed to care for that reptile.

This guide is well beyond the simple quick reference guide I was looking for!
