2 comments about The Keeping & Breeding of Corn Snakes (Reptile Care).

  1. I keep and breed corns snakes, and this book helped me out a lot. McEachern has had a LOT of experience with these snakes, and I don't know if I could have gotten far without this book. By far the BEST corn snake manual around!!!

  2. A good book with good information. Learned alot about keeping and breeding corns. Would be better if book was in color to show different color patterns and variations.

2 comments about Cooters, Sliders & Painted Turtles (Herpetology Series).

  1. The problem with TFH publications is that they are usually so outdated as to be completely unreliable (and sometimes harmful).

The pictures in this book look like they came straight from the early 1980's, and as always TFH has taken the opportunity to tell their readers that their own pet products should be used above any other brand. The problem with this is that half the products featured in this book are now obsolete - they aren't even manufactured anymore!

I purchased this book after someone dropped off a rather large yellow-bellied cooter that they no longer wanted. Of course, the poor guy had been wild and yanked out of his natural environment only to be quickly tired of and abandonded by his kidnappers.

The only species this book deals with are native to North America, and I feel obligated to note here that because they are native species, most of them are ILLEGAL TO OWN IN CAPTIVITY without proper permits from your state's fish and game department.

ANY water turtle under four inches in size is ILLEGAL TO HAVE IN CAPTIVITY.

Also, turtles are the messiest, stinkiest, dirtiest creatures you could possibly fit into a fish tank and I do not recommend them as pets, especially for young children. They require A LOT of hard work and almost daily tank maintanence.

That being said, they also carry the bacteria Salmonella, which makes you VERY VERY SICK (I speak from experience as I have had it, from.. you guessed it.. messing with turtles) with E. Coli like symptoms that can be fatal to small children.

It bothers me that these warnings are not stated clearly anywhere in this book, and that reading this book one might come away with the idea that it's perfectly acceptable to go catch a wild painted turtle (which are on the endangered species list in this state) and take it home to make it a pet.

TFH should stop putting out books before they cause indirect harm to more animals than I'm sure they already have.

  2. Great pictures make this book very useful for figuring out exactly what type of turtle you have in that tank in your home. In addition, the information on longevity and disposition is helpful in understanding these animals, both at home and in the wild.

5 comments about Iguanas (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Every thing I would ever need to know about Iguanas is in this book. I've come accross some other books about Iguanas , but this is buy far the best one out there. I've been studying Iguans for more than 15 years. Yet I'me learnning new things about them from this book.

  2. This book was very helpful in learning about the do's and don'ts of having a pet iguana. The information was very clearly presented. I recommend this book to new iguana owners.

  3. You will find all the basic stuff to start with your iguana but it is definitely not the biggest book you can buy. Try the book : Green iguana-The ultimate owner's manuel.

  4. There is a decent overview provided by this book, but some of the information (at least in the edition I read) that is definitely outdated. Green Iguanas are NOT insectivorous at any stage of their life. This has been proven by several reputable universities in the last few years. Buy this book in addition to other manuals.

  5. Living in Japan it's not always so easy to get the exact information I need but I was exceptionally lucky with this book. It covers all the aspects of iguana care and I like the way it especially reinforces the following points: 1. The size of enclosure your iguana will need (Dispencing with the usual glass tank I went out and bought a large glass fronted kitched cabinet straight away!). 2. The importance of the calcium/ phosphorous ratio in the diet. 3. The fact that, just like a cat or dog, to tame an iguana you need to pay attention to it everyday. The book doesn't mention, however, that too much cabbage or broccoli may cause thyroid problems and it doesn't contain tables showing the exact calcium/ phosporous tables of vegetables or fruit eg. eggplant 1.15/1, chinese cabbage 2.85/1, but, I can assure you that, once you have that information, in addition to this book, your iguana care library is complete. I've had my iguana for 8 months and he's doing just great!

2 comments about Poison Dart Frogs (Success With An Amphibian Pet).

  1. This book is very concise at only 80 pages, but packed with useful information about keeping and breeding poison dart frogs. There is extensive information about setting up the terrarium, including appropriate and inappropriate plant selections, food sources and their breeding, and care and breeding of the frogs themselves. The more common species are covered in individual chapters, but minor species are omitted. The photography is exquisite and more than justifies the purchase price. I have read several similar references, but this clearly the most useful to the hobbyist.

  2. this is a great book for you interested out there. It talks about everything on the surface, but there is alot more things in depth not mentioned. Like the frogs all cost from $45 to $300, a drop of poison from the skin can kill about 200 adults...and so on. It is a very expensive pet and not recommended for beginners. As a professional herp breeder i don't recommend this pet to just anyone but the BOOK IS GREAT for everyone.
