3 comments about Taking Terrapin Home: A Love Affair With a Small Catamaran..

  1. Interested in catamarans, cruising, outfitting and crossing the sea? If you are do not buy this book. This smallish tome is long on ego and little on hard information. We do learn that our boorish captain has a baron in his bloodlines, that he is a divemaster, an amateur anthropologist, has relatives at Cambridge and seems to jump from London and back again seemingly at will and from anywhere. We also know that to sail with him is not fun(ask the poor couple who endured his company on one leg of the journey only to flee port as soon as they arrived). I have never heard such a littany of failures at sea or just plain miserable passages since Herb Payson's Blown Away. Unlike Payson, the skipper here is humorless and of little interest. As for sailing insights, you won't find much of value here. This unfortunate yachtie never talks of his boat's abilities relative to other craft(monohulls) when faced with difficult or uncomfortable circumstances. Our inadequate admiral is all too puffed-up with himself and his new-age anti-smoking, anti-population, anti-crew attitudes to properly attend to a simple shore power problem or understand that when you kill a dolphin fish it dies and it loses its color along with its life. Some ecologist our unfortunately named "captain".

  2. This book is the biggest load of rubbish that I have read about a small boat voyage. His insistance on fancy gadgets is an insult to the great sailors of yesteryear like Moitessier and Tangvald etc. He did not seem to enjoy the voyage either and his endless bitching and moaning about the motor makes me wonder why he didn't biff the bloddy thing overboard along with the rest of his other "essential" electronic gadgets. I mean to say, a sail boat is for sailing! And his "essential" list is an absolute joke. If you want to read a book about real small boat voyagers who did it without all the fancy equipment I give you three authors: Shane Acton, Peter Tangvald and Bernard Moitessier.

  3. The author commissioned the building of his Heavenly Twins 27' Catamaran in England. He then sailed her via France to his home in Florida. His voyage takes him through the French canals to the Mediterranean, and homeward bound across the Atlantic. Wilson entertains you with a fresh in-depth look at one of the great sailing routes of antiquity, vividly describing his encounters with nature, crew and fellow cruisers. His command of the language [The King's English] offers a light touch that makes for pleasureable reading. "Terrapin" contains a vast amount of practical information which should prove invaluable to anyone contemplating such a voyage -- or merely dreaming about it. In short, "Terrapin" is a delightful and informative book

4 comments about General Care and Maintenance of Tokay Geckos and Related Species (The Herpetocultural Library).

  1. The Herpetocultural Library is a series of small, inexpensive books dedicated to educating the public on the proper care and reproduction of selected reptiles and amphibians in captivity. The series founder is Phillippe de Vosjoli, and he has authored many in the series, and has recruited the services of other distinguished authors who have particular experience with particular animals. This book is an example of his utilization of two knowledgeable gecko enthuisiasts. The book is small, with 60 pages in total, but richly illustrated and full of useful and fascinating information, on selected members of the Gekkonidae, specifically the members of the genus Gekko, Ptychozoon, and Cyrtodactylus that are commonly imported via the pet trade in the USA. Specifically, the tokay gecko, Gekko gecko, is covered in great detail. The authors do a fantastic job in circumlocuting the information on care, feeding, housing, medecine, reproduction, natural history, and even folklore on these fascinating lizards. It is a must for any gecko pet keeper and enthuisiast. These wonderful animals deserve the best care in captivity, and this book gives a step by step guide to achieving this goal.

  2. Good book for beginners. Loaded with information pics and much more. Good illustrations.

    BUY IT :-)

  3. I return over and over again to use this manual when I have husbandry questions about tokays. The most useful section is Breeding.

Husbandry information on other related gekko subspecies are covered in this manual including the Golden Gecko (G. ulikovskii), White-lined gecko(Gekko vittatus),the Flying gecko (Ptychozoon kuhlii)and others.

The Introduction, General Information, and Ethnoherpetology sections contain some of the most interesting reptile reading ever.

  4. It is a verry good book in "The Herpetocultural Library" series, it has lots of information, full color pictures and specific information on many species, it basically tells you everything you need to know to raise healthy and happy day geckos.

5 comments about The New Chameleon Handbook: Everything About Selection, Care, Diet, Disease, Reproduction, and Behavior (Barron's Pet Owner's Manuals).

  1. What you need to know about chameleons is in this book! I enjoyed reading it and learning everything about this little creature. From it's history and evolution, to it's anatomy and manerisms. What I really wanted was a book which explained how to care for the chameleon and I picked the right one.Francois LeBerre makes me feel comfortable caring for the chameleon. The size of the book is good for handling and storing. The print is large and clear, easy to read and the pictures are messmerizing. When I browsed through other books on the topic, they seemed like a joke compared to this informative publication! I recommend this to beginners (which I am) because you'll feel like an expert (LeBerre) when you're done. Enjoy!!!

  2. The book gave me a lot of information and it had a lot of grate pictures. The book is easy to understand and they tell alot of info.

  3. My name is Nobu, I am from Japan. Here in Japan, Francois Le Berre is famous for his work on chameleons, this book is the best I have ever read on my favourite animals. Some Japanese publishers have found the pictures so good that they have been using them in some of the japanese magazines too. The information is very complete and the pictures astonishing, I am looking forward for Francois Le Berre's next book. He is unsurpassed and really is the Master of Chameleons!

  4. In light of the two previous reviews, I felt compelled to add my own thoughts. It is a very good book, but lacks some information I think is essential for the beginner. The author makes little or no reference to common names of the organisms (where a common name is ascribed). This would make it difficult for the typical beginner to relate the scientific name of the organism with the common name that is usually available at the site of purchase. The author also fails to give adequate information regarding the size attained for a full grown adult specimen. This is especially important when a budding herptologist decides to embark on caring for a "beginners" specimen, but is not told that the animal will be two feet long as an adult. This can be critical when one is designing a habitat. It is not at all uncommon to see beginners think of these wonderful animals as being "small and cute", when in fact many of the easiest to care for become quite large. That being said, LeBerre has certainly prepared an excellent guide, and the photos are wonderful. It is the best book out there for the layman, and does in fact rate five stars.

  5. Do not be fooled by the size and soft cover of this book, it is in a class by itself. The author covers every aspect of the art and science of Chameleon husbandry. It becomes immediately apparent that the author has an intimate knowledge of chameleon natural history and captive husbandry. He presents unique ways of helping the reader understand chameleon natural history, behavior, reproduction and captive care. Especially noteworthy is the breadth of chameleon species described. There is no skimping on data: natural range, other common names, subspecies, age to maturation, clutch size, incubation/pseudo-gestation duration, incubation temperature, lighting, feeding, etc...everything you need to know to keep and breed common and rare chameleon species of all genera. Asthetically the book is a masterpiece. Photos of rarely seen uncommon and common species, in their best colors, accompany each species description. The author's lifelong experiences, research and passion for chameleons have resulted in an unbelievably informative yet practical book which has the ability to inspire the most seasoned chameleon keeper/breeder.

1 comments about Quick & Easy Green Treefrog Care (Quick & Easy).

  1. Green Treefrogs are probably the most readily available and frequently kept treefrogs on the planet today, and this book does a superior job of detailing their needs and requirements in the captive environment. The photographs illuminate visually what the text is driving at, so you get a good idea all-around of what these frogs are and how to care for them in the home terrarium. It's hard to believe that the author packed such a quantity of solid information into a 64 page book, but he did; this is the highest quality text on Green Treefrogs available on the market today.
