1 comments about Green Water Dragons, Sailfin Lizards and Basilisks (General Care and Maintenance of Series).

  1. This book contains the 'basic'care and handling information necessary to take care of your water dragon, however, if you are interested in an in-depth look at these wonderous creatures, or more detailed information regarding their care and history, you may feel a little unsatisfied after this short read. It is accurate information, and does give you a 'general' (as the title states) idea of what it takes to care for a dragon.

2 comments about The Cichlid: An Owner'S Guide to a Happy Healthy Fish (Happy Healthy Pet).

  1. the book does a fairly complete job of describing the chemistry of fish tanks (pH, DH or hardness, etc.).

It does an OK job describing the various fish. There is a chapter on Dwarfs, African, and American Ciclids. There are a few pictures. It was an annoyance that she described one particular cichlid as being one of the most beautiful, but didn't include a picture of that one.

Some of the descriptions were more complete than others. Some just had a few sentences. This is a cichlid. It likes this water. It is aggressive during mating. Some had a page long description.

There is a fairly complete chapter on cichlid behavior and the various reasons for aggression. That was a very interesting section.

It's an OK book. I'd give about 3 stars. I would call it a beginner book, except there are several important things missing (like cycling and acclimation). It's not an expert book either because of the general knowledge and the lack of significant species details.

  2. easy to read, excellent introduction to these type of fish, covers the basics of cichild keeping, excellent photographs, touches all aspects of being a cichlid aquarist.....the downside is that each section is very brief, if you desire a more in depth discussion on certain topics you will need to find another book to go along with this one, the other downside is that explanation of different kinds of cichlids is very general and brief...overall, a good beginner book, but much to general for the experiences aquarist

5 comments about Confessions of a Turtle Wife.

  1. An enjoyable, but very light-weight memoir about a New York City man who keeps several turtles in aquariums in his apartment, and his wife who moves from grudging acceptance to interest in them. It's told from her viewpoint as she observes his turtle obsession. It's interesting to see all the chelonian sub-species with which they interact (my experience is only with box turtles), but I couldn't help feeling sorry for how little space the poor turtles had to roam around in.

  2. In our marriage, I am the one (wife) with the turtles (and other reptiles) and my husband has moved from indifference to quiet love for my critters.
While somewhat episodic, the book is funny and so true! It is
a wonderful account of the ups, downs, laughs and tears
    of turtle ownership.
I give this 5 stars for the humor, and for bringing turtles
to the rest of the world.

  3. This book is about relationships and love. Because if a couple can go through all this couple went through and still be with each other,it has to be true love. Or the sex.
Its also a very funny book, the type you can't put down when you start. Its full of situations you can emulate if you are in a similar situation, "You want that honey, OK then I get the diamond bracelet, you want to build what? Ok they I'll go buy our tickets to Paris.
Anyone who lives with someone who is obsessed about something they don't like and only tolerate (golf, footbal, Star Trek) will love this book. Even if only just to learn it can be worse.
    Buy it. Read it.

  4. This delightful, funny, even suspenseful book is ostensibly about the experience of living with a "turtle nut" (my term for a turtle enthusiast). The book does deliver quantities of information on that topic, as well as about turtles as pets, caring for turtles, turtle conservation, and more.

However, it's also a personal and touching chronicle of a relationship developing between a man and a woman.

The author brings a light and humorous touch to the entire book. I often laughed out loud while reading it. And, believe it or not, Confessions of a Turtle Wife is a page turner! I could not put it down. (There is even a chapter about sex that includes a graphic description of the sex act-between consenting adult turtles!)

A most enjoyable, informative, and uplifting book-I recommend it highly.

  5. I LOVED THIS BOOK! If you're looking for a very funny quick read--a real diversion--then pick up a copy of "Confessions of a Turtle Wife" by Anita Salzberg.

You don't have to know a thing about turtles or even care about them, but I guarantee by the time you finish this hilarious, educational, and positively charming book, you'll realize it's not about turtles after all. It's a cosmic New York love story--a guy obsessed with chelonians and the woman who falls in love with him...and his turtles.

Knowing ultimatums do not work, Salzberg never says "it's me or the turtles." It's a sidelong glance at how to find true happiness by accepting what cannot be changed, and, a very funny one, at that.

1 comments about Terrarium Animals from A to Z (Compass Guides).

  1. While this guide does not go indepth with each reptile and each terrarium type, it does provide all the information that you need as you look into setting up and maintaining a terrarium and selecting reptiles. The reptile information is broken down with easy to understand symbols and includes reptile characteristics, diet, behavior, times of day they are most active, level of difficulty for the reptile's care, terrarium size, type, substrate, temperature, and other habitat items that are needed to care for that reptile.

This guide is well beyond the simple quick reference guide I was looking for!

3 comments about Fishkeepers Guide to African Cichlids.

  1. I have had cichlids since my first tank, which was 6 years ago. I have only ever had cichlids since then, and always had much luck with them. After owning this book, I was able to breed my first cichlids without even trying. Apparently, just by maintaining a very good tank (which was helped along by this book) my fish bred themselves. I had two sets of babies, and finally had to remove "mom" from the tank so that I could manage all of these fish.

The book starts out describing what lakes the different cichlids come from, then gets into the water composition in each of the different lake regions. It also gets into how to handle water pH, ammonia and other toxins, etc. Then, what the different filters are, proper tank lighting, and then what specific plants go well with cichlids of each type described in the book. It also has a great section (which is what prompted me to purchase this book) on specific symptoms of disease in cichlids and how to treat them. This is just in the first half of the book.

There is a short section on breeding, and then the last half of the book is more specifics on various types of cichlids (with pictures).

This book is short but very concise. My first 6 years of amateur tanking was done without any direction besides other people's advice. This is the first and last book I ever purchased on cichlids. Unless you plan on starting a fish farm or running a fish store, this book is more than enough, and short enough to enjoy reading.

  2. This book was very samll (116 pages) and was not what I had hoped for. I am a new cichlid owner and this is not the first book I bought. I already had my tank and my starter fish. I wanted some information that was not in your average "dummies book" which I had already read. What I got was some new information, but for the most part, it was just a review book.
Also, I wanted an idea for some more fish to buy. This book has profiles of 40 cichlids, which sounds like a lot. However, when you take into account the size you want (in my case 4 or 5 inches) and the disposition of the fish (a lot of reviewed fish would not do well in a community species tank), you end up with just a small number of fish you would even want.
In conclusion, it was an informative introductory book, but I wish I would have spent a few more dollars and gotten a more complete species guide.

  3. This was good book for someone buying their first Cichlid (Like me). However I very quickly wanted to know more! The book is great for setting up the tank and gives nice reviews of some species. I think it is a good first book, I found it very helpful, but it is not for experienced cichlid breeders.

1 comments about South America Cichlids: Keeping & Breeding Them in Captivity (Re-615).

  1. If you are keeping South American Cichlids this book can be a good choice for you with it is price. It has brief and simple information but if you are expecting lots of high quality photos you will be dissapointted. It emphasizes on breeding much more than keeping them.

  2. This book has it all! Feeding advice with nutrional facts, all about health concerns, diseases, ageing, light, heat... Just about verything about housing and caring for your bearded dragon.

I love this book, and it's so good and well written that you really want to read it, over and over again. The perfect book for any bearded dragon owner and a must for anyone who is going to buy one. Buy this before you buy your lizard!

The only thing that could have been better in this book, is the amount of pictures, it just has a couple of pictures in the middle, that's all. But that's the only negative thing about this book.
