  1. as another reviewer noted, you get what you pay for. You can certainly use this book; the info is sound. However, it's also somewhat basic, and most of it is available online. The range maps were cool, the photos were good, and even the info was OK. It's just all out on the web, for free. The book doesn't exactly go into great depth as to the natural habits and habitats of the animals (not really it's point), and is restricted to being a "pet store" type of book. It is what it is, and it's OK for it, but you can get better, more in depth info, for a little more, and pretty much the same info for free. It'll tell you how to keep your critter alive, and maybe breed it, but not much more.

  2. I bought this book the day I got my Pueblan milk snake. It's interesting, but nothing special. You can get all of this information (plus some) off the internet for free. The only reason I gave as many stars as I did is because it had a lot of color pictures, there was one section in the back that proves useful. My snake was having some trouble shedding, and they had some helpful advice for when this happened. I live in a little hillbilly town in Oregon, and we don't have any exotic vets nearby, so without that info, my little Beetlejuice may have lost an eye, or worse.
All in all, it's worth a read. You get what you pay for ^_^

  3. the photos are the best of any of the "kingsnake" books, the maps are useful, and the care etc. sections are adequate.

  4. I have been involved in keeping and breeding kingsnakes for years and this is by far the best book available in its price range. Packed full of photos and current husbandry techniques, I highly recommend it to both novice and experienced hobbyists. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book--a must read for any kingsnake or milksnake enthusiast!

  5. This is an excellent book. We just got a Kingsnake and used the book to classify it; we found it informative for feeding and other care procedures. The book was well priced, had good photographs and the text was interesting, giving useful information about the hybrid Florida Intergrade Kingsnake (our pet) and how large it will get. John Ric

1 comments about Turtles and Tortoises: Caring for Them, Feeding Them, Understanding Them (Family Pet Series).

  1. This book is the one of the newest versions of Wilke's work which has splendid photographs, but sadly the illustrations are not as powerful or as plentiful as his previous book. This would have been the Perfect starter book had the illustrations been of the caliber of his last book. I was surprised that the Sulcata tortoise was not really mentioned in this book but none the less, Turtle Times, the largest turtle related web site, (...) recommends this as the must have starter book.

4 comments about Chameleons: Care and Breeding of Jackson's, Panther, Veiled, and Parson's (Advanced Vivarium Systems).

  1. This book is DOO DOO! I bought it hoping it would tell me how to take care of my newly purchased chameleon and maybe tips on breeding. All it talks about is how they live in the wilderness. LIKE I CARE?!?!

  2. i think that it covered too many species in such a small book it wasnt detailed enough on each species.it would be much better if it had more categories for sections of particular species e.g. feeding your veiled chameleon etc

  3. To start, this book seemed to be filled with a lot of information at first. Then after a while, I realized that it contained nothing useful to me, because I was looking for very detailed and specific information on Vieled Chameleons and this book only had a broad overview on the physical characteristics, and the care section was 5 pages long. Not a bad book for a overview. Not a good book for details.

  4. Nov 20, 1999 - You cannot go wrong with AVS books. The authors are pioneers in reptiles' and amphibians' husbandry. This book (like any AVS books) is user friendly and contains a lot of practical tips. It's simply the best book about chameleon breeding in the market today.

1 comments about Corn Snakes (Bartlett, Richard D., Reptile Basics.).

  1. This book is excellent for beginning snake hobbyists. It covers corn snake care, breeding and housing. The book also included some excellent pictures of the different kinds of corn snakes. Along with providing helpful hints to keeping your snake healthy, the book provides information on the correct way to obtain your first snake! In my opinion, the best part about this book was the detailed way the authors take the reader step-by-step on constructing an incubator for snake hatching. Everything in the book is well organized to provide easy reference. At the end, a helpful glossary also allows easy reference. I would recommend this book to a snake hobbyist that is interested in keeping and breeding snakes to learn the correct ways to maintain a snake's health and overall happiness.

3 comments about Captive Husbandry and Propagation of the Boa Constrictors and Related Boas.

  1. This is the perfect book for all ranges and levels of Boa owners from a single animal owner all the way to a professional breeder. This book is scaled more to the professional but, I highly recommend this book be in every library. Extremely informative. The book has some Color pictures, a perfect guide to sexing different Boas with a extremely well written chart for sexing many many boas, In - Depth coverage of husbandry of Boas, Heavily detailed on different species of Boas, This book also has an excellent list of both the Common names and the Scientific names of Boas, and Well worth the money!

  2. This is an excellent volume for anyone wanting information on keeping or breeding boas. The superb chapters on designing a herp room, and heating devices will benefit anyone keeping reptiles of anykind ,not just boas. I thought the photos were especially good, including some of boas I've never seen.

  3. This is a great book if you are looking for information on breeding boas.It gives strategies and proven methods for a few different boids. The info is great. The reason I did not give this book a 10 is because I think they could have added more pictures for the price

3 comments about Schmidt-Fockes Discus Book.

  1. What a disappointment! I'd expect the well-known and respected discus breeder to really share his experience, provide tips, give some helpful info, etc. Instead, we have a poorly translated and unorganized (ala TFH) coffee table book filled with fragmentary biographical memoirs and reiterations.
The same photos are repeated over and over again, and the great Dr.Axelrod is pictured and praised on almost every page (what a surprise for a TFH book!).
By the end of the book, the author is starting talking about his OBGYN practice and birth control, security at the airports and his years of medical residency. It sounds like he either got completely disoriented or was desperately trying to finish this literary nightmare.

  2. I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. It seems more like a biography of E. S. Focke and his personal travels. I was not happy with the amount of technical advice concerning discus. The pictures are very good. All in all, I think I wasted money.

  3. Dr. Schmidt-Focke should have titled this the Discus Bible! This is THE book of Discus fish. His vision and groundbreaking work with this fish has taken the discus further than anyone could have imagined or DID imagine. His views, thoughts and teaching skills can be used by the beginner as well as the professional. A must have for anyone "in" the breed! Well worth every single penney you have to pay for it. Don't miss this one!
