5 comments about Frogs and Toads: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. If you're interested in frogs in general and would like to find out information about them, you'll probably enjoy this book for its many facts and profiles. It's almost like a frog magazine that has short articles on various species.

If you're interested in owning a frog but don't yet know much about any species, you'll enjoy the brief explanations of the various types of frogs and their housing requirements. The profiles of species span nearly half of the book's length, offering many choices for future frog owners.

Unfortunately, if you already have frogs or are already decided on what species you want to own, this book doesn't have the detailed care information you'll want and need in order to properly care for your pet(s). As the author states, "This slim volume is by no means the end-all . . . so you may want to locate and purchase additional . . . material on the frog or toad that you own" (p. 40). As an example, there were less than two dozen lines about both of the species of frogs I have, combined, and it was all basic. It's important for purchasers to realize this book is not all-inclusive, unlike the back cover copy above claims.

While this book is an excellent, fun, and educational overview for those interested in frogs in general, it isn't a book suited to those who need species-specific care information. For that, you may have more luck by searching the Internet for fan sites and mailing lists. The book also needs some updating--only one of the websites mentioned in the back is still online.

  2. I liked this book alot. It's pretty informative and mentions alot of different species of frogs/toads. I have toads, and it was hard to find a book about them. It's also great for beginners.

  3. I am a new frog keeper, but yet, I know some things about frogs. I bought this book because I read the previous customer comments about this book. This book says about almost anything but it doesn't bother to explain how things work. For example, while I was needed to know the use of a heat mat, the book didn't say how you must use it. I'm also still concerned about the top of a terrarium (must it be a closed one or not?) How exactly I use vitamins with food? It contains many information but only as Titles and a few comments! (well, not bad for the money)

  4. For the money, probably the best value on the subject. Very informative. Lots of color pictures. Describes dozens and dozens of animals, with feeding, housing, climate and related information. Also lists resources in back of book: where to find live food and climate equipment, as well as additional reading material. And much, much more. Wow!

  5. This book is great for the beginner frogger, the experienced frogger, and everyone in between. Very informative, easy to understand, and written with the person who needs a quick reference in mind!

2 comments about Diseases of Amphibians and Reptiles:.

  1. This book is one of the best I have read on the diseases of reptiles. It is far more informative on the basics, yet goes into depth without losing the reader. Very well done. I would advise this book for any herper- the beginner, or the expert.

  2. Diseases Of Amphibians And Reptiles is a solid guide to diagnosing and treating diseases in amphibians and reptiles. Author and experienced veterinarian Dr. Kohler covers parasitological, bacteriological, mycological, and virological diseases in all manner of creatures from frogs to snakes to crocodiles. Black-and-white and color photographs on almost every page aid in identifying disease symptoms, and the text offers clear descriptions and treatment advice, written in highly accessible terms with a bare minimum of technical jargon. A glossary, a list of references, and extended appendices round out this "must-have" guide for anyone responsible for reptilian and amphibian welfare, from ordinary pet owners to pet shops to professional animal handlers and more.

1 comments about The Guide to Plants for the Reptile Terrarium (Guide To...(T.F.H. Publications)).

  1. The book isn't the best. Its short a mere 64 pages and a good number of the pages are covered with pictures. The lighting section was useful but you could of gotten the rest of the information from a houseplant book.

5 comments about Discus As a Hobby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started (Save-Our-Planet Book).

  1. I didn't care for this book and here's why. The author's coverage is much too superficial to be really useful for getting started in this hobby. You certainly need more than what is in this book, yet the very misleading title states it has "everything you need to know".

The book is heavy on photos and light on details. The author isn't shy about giving his opinions which would be good, but unfortunately he doesn't always say why. At one point he states that under-gravel filters are bad, but tells us since much has been written about them the reader can find out why elsewhere. True enough, but excuse me, why am I bothering with this book? It is supposed to have "everything you need to know" isn't it?

The fact is there is nothing in this book that can't be found in better detail, and free, by doing an internet search of various Discus related web sites. However, I do recommend a much better book, "Discuss Fish" by T. Giovanetti which has much more information, and better, detailed explanations.

    Overall score: Thumbs way down.

  2. The purpose of this book is to aid the beginning discus hobbiest. It does this well by providing all of the basics to start anyone down the right path to keep discus. For the more advanced hobbiest it doesn't offer as much, but that wasn't the purpose of this volume.

  3. I have owned this book for several years. I also own several "coffee-table" sized books on Discus. But this is the book I find myself referring to most for information on how to keep my Discus healthy. The author's practical, no-nonsense style is informative, and very easy to read. It is a bargain, considering all the good tips and advice contained within. Highly recommended for beginning to intermediate-level aquarists who want to raise "The King of the Aquarium".

  4. I found that the book had real information that you can apply when getting started in the hobby. I find myself going back to the book time and time again finding small bits of useful techniques that I missed reading it the first time. I have found that if you apply the advice given in the book you will get off to a great start with the fish and have many years of enjoyment to look foward too. For such a small book it is packed with excellent advice that other books overlook and just want to show you photos of fish. This book really tells you how to do things. This is book is a must read to add to your collection.

  5. The man has forgotten more than the rest of us will ever know.

5 comments about The Cichlid Aquarium.

  1. definitely one of the better cichlid books on the market. lot's of information on a wide variety of cichlids from mating behavior to habitat. ...

  2. This book was a little bit of an disappointment for me. It has good guidlines on how your cichlid aquarium should be and how to maintain it. But it doesn't tell you alot about the fish and lacks information about them such as habits, size, diet etc.
I would not recomend this to a hobbyist who wants to learn more about the fish themselves.

  3. Very interesting book. Gives a lot of information byt if you want specific information on your fish it does not give. It doesnt have an index making things very hard when you want to find specific info.

  4. Excellent book. Great photos. No index? Huh? C'mon PaulV. and Dr. Loiselle. Did you guys both make the Homer Simpson "DOAH" sound after you published this and realized you forgot an index. Very frustrating. I still grab this book from time to time for reference and habitually look to the INDEX, but alas, there is none. Can you say REVISED EDITION?

  5. This book is definetely not for the beginner cichlid keeper. Although it provides some basic information on tank setup etc, it is geared toward the advanced aquarist.

As is typical from Loiselle the information is concise and in depth.

Only the lack of a decent index mars this otherwise excellent book.
