2 comments about The Guide to Owning Water Dragons, Sailfin Lizards & Basilisks.

  1. I thought this book was very helpful. It contained very important and reliable information. While the information was somewhat limited you should easily be able to find other information on the internet. The pictures were spectacular. They give you a feel of how a healthy Water Dragon should look and how a sickly Water Dragon should appear. If you are planning to purchase this book you might also have to look just a little for other more specific information. However if you want the basics on how to care for a Water Dragon I beleive that this book will be very helpful for you.

  2. The overall basic information in this book is correct, but given that there are 2 species of water dragon, 3 Basilisk, and one Sailfin Lizard species discussed on only 15 text pages, and the remaining 35 pages consisting of caging, diet and health topics for all 6 lizard types, with commercial products suggested for use scattered throughout this section, I find this book to be too minimal to really help anyone but the newest of lizard keepers - and these new lizard keepers just might be better off with a book that goes into more detail.

Philippe de Vosjoli's "The general care and maintenance of Green water dragons, Sailfin lizards, and Basilisks" or Bartlett & Bartlett's "Anoles, Basilisks, and Water Dragons" would be better books for a new lizard keeper to start out with.

This book has a lot of pictures in it - 70 +, and while some of the lizard photographs are beautiful, many show stressed or ill looking lizards with captions that describe the pics as being a normal appearing or healthy lizard.

2 comments about The Completely Illustrated Guide to Koi for Your Pond.

  1. this book contains little useful information regarding koi keeping...
only a lot of big low resolution (some seem like taken with a cell phone) pics of koi. And of course the price...when I got this book I tought I was beeing scammed...for this money one could buy 5 other realy good books on koi! I realy don't know for whom is this book written. It has little information for begginers and no useful information for pros, only big pics! But you can find better ones on the net...and more information in the wikipedia section on koi...

The only good thing in this book is the paper quality!

  2. This book is a work of art, replete with what seems like thousands of gorgeous full-page photos and art prints, as well as essays on a broad range of topics. It's definitely koi-centric, so don't expect a book on pond-building, but for the true aficionado this is a must-have.

5 comments about Newts and Salamanders (More Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).

  1. This is not the best book about newts and salamanders, but
it is very very ok if you look to the price up there!!
Lot of nice images, ideas and some diseases info. I liked.

  2. This book was helpful when I decided to keep a newt because I was able to find out what I could feed it. It did not give information about a few of the species pictured in the book, but for a beginner there is information about feeding and housing that is useful.

5 comments about The General Care and Maintenance of Green Anoles (General Care and Maintenance of Series).

  1. It's hard to find reliable care books for reptiles theses days. Mostly because of product placement. All too often I see photos of poor UVB lights, heat rocks, or harmful cage substrate in books just because of product placement (and the author probably got paid).

This book is tolerable. Though it doesn't get an A from me. It's not exactly brand new, and that is the most obvious reason books are bad. They make excellent resources for unchangable facts such as "green anoles are green when healthy." But newsletters, journals, and authentic online sources are better.

This is probably the best anole book out there though. But it's truly not enough folks. Like all books he tries to stress the things to do. But like all books he doesn't stress the worse things not to do.

Information on harmful products to avoid , cutting edge health remedies, which brands of UVB light are best, very explicit and dirty issues with housing anoles with other species, information on better insects such as silkworms (we need to abolish meal worms and wax worms already, folks!), and things about anole diets one must know (such as why pet store vitamins may be bad and why canned or commerical diets are a joke).

Like I said, it's good to get one interested. But it's not the anole care bible by a long shot.

  2. I though that this was a good, basic book about anoles. It is a good book for general information about these lizards. However, I would have appreciated more detailed information about how to take care of crickets.

  3. This book is verry enlightning I found everything I need to know about the little devils...lol.

  4. This book is verry enlightning I found everything I need to know about the little devils...lol.

  5. This is an excellent book for beginners to keeping anoles. Though quite commonly sold as pets, decent, correct information about their care is rare. The price is reasonable, and the pictures both pretty and illustrative. The reviewers who complained about "big words" and difficult text will find the book easier to read after they finish high school.

2 comments about The General Care And Maintenance Of Garter Snakes And Water Snakes (The Herpetocultural Library. Series 200).

  1. A nice addition to any snake library - I enjoyed reading this and hope it raises the popularity of this underated group. Basically, it contains everything you need to keep, raise and breed these species and contains instructions on how to prepare food to prevent thiamin deficiency. If you keep water and garter snakes - buy it!

  2. It helped me alot after I found my garter snake! It told alot obout feeding and housing!

4 comments about Venomous Snakes of the World.

  1. A well-assembled, passionate, generalist overview of venomous snakes. But the pictures! Over 200 pages of glossy photographs that convey a ton of information and a lot of drama.

  2. I bought this book to add to my reptile library and to use a reference. Before my trip to the jungles of Costa Rica, I thought I'd read up on some of the more onery snakes that I might encounter, such as the bushmaster and fer-de-lance. Not only were there no pictures or information on the bushmaster, it wasn't even listed in the index! As for the fer-de-lance, there was a single picture but no information. I have since read the entire book, and have found it to be extremely lacking in useful species-specific information. The chapter titled "A Few Interesting Species" is very short (about 30 pages), not to mention it excludes some fairly important species! For the beginning enthusiast who just wants a general overview, this would be a good place to start, but don't let your education stop here! The book's only redeeming qualities for me were some nice glossy photos and the anecdotes written by herpetologists with snake bite or near miss experiences.

  3. This was a good introductory book but did not go into enough detail for my taste.I did like the anecdotes and the pictures were great.

  4. This book provides a basic general overview that is good, but is geared towards the inexperienced snake enthusiast and does not get into depth on any subject. Ironically, the subject that is covered in most depth is mouse breeding. That space could have given room to more thorough species descriptions covering most genera. Also, too many photos that have been seen elsewhere in TFH Books.

2 comments about Tetras and Other Characins.

  1. My item came on time and in good condition. Those are the two important things to me.

  2. This book is wonderful. An excellent and concise book for the beginner who wants to start keeping characins. There is a short technical introduction followed by tips of setting up a characin tank. It also highlights a majority of the characins that are available for the hobby. Each of the characin featured in the book is supported by a brief but rich description of its living habitat, water quality (pH and water hardness) and the type of food it needs. The pictures in the book are clear and the photographs are well-taken.
