1 comments about Swordtails: Keeping and Breeding Them in Captivity.
-
A comprehensive little book on the subject of Swordtails, one of the most popular tropical fish around, by the godfather of tropical fish keeping Herbert Axelrod. The book is an American publication and some of the equipment shown is now becoming a little dated and does not always correspond with the equipment available in Britain.
The swordtail has been bred in many forms and a multitude of colours, so much so in fact that the original wild green colour and the Montezuma swordtails are virtually non existent in the fish trade anymore. However the fish keeper is more than adequately catered for by the new strains.
The swordtail is a fish that will live happily with its own kind or with other fishes in a community tank and is extremely popular. Not least because it gives birth to live young and these can be seen swimming about in the tank, although unless the tank is sparsely populated or heavily planted they are unlikely to survive as the other fish will see them as a ready meal.
The book gives all the information that you are likely to require, either for breeding these lovely fishes or simply making sure that they are happy and healthy in your tank.

3 comments about Bearded Dragon (Success with a Reptile Pet).
- This book is great for beginners just starting out with keeping beardies. Well-illustrated with many beautiful photographs. Easy to understand and covers the basics of each aspect of keeping dragons. Fantastic and detailed info on feeding. This book is a great companion for the other book I purchased called "The Bearded Dragon Manual" by Philippe De Vosjoli.
- This book offers lots of info on the care, health, and maintenence of bearded dragons. Also, it is a very specific guide for feeding, tank setup, breeding, incubator setup, and raising hatchlings. This book also points out the behavioural characteristics of bearded dragons and what they are "saying" to you or another bearded dragon. I found the courtship section to be most helpful when my boyfriend and I wanted to see if our beardies would co-habitate in a friendly manner. This book has photographs of different color phases of bearded dragons, and would make a great coffee table book.
- I have a bearded dragon named Mojove, she is very healthy and strong . I have decided to breed bearded dragons , I still have lots to learn but this book helped me alot. It explained the basics of breeding to the very complicated things like building an incubator. My favorite thing about this book was the photography, it showed everything about bearded dragons. Mothers burrowing eggs, different breeds of bearded dragons etc... . I love bearded dragons, mine is my pride and joy , this book helped me understand the habits and thinking of bearded dragons. It explained diet for bearded dragons and their mating behaviors, their housing and how to raise baby beardies. I highly recomend this book &, a bearded dragon. Thanks a lot! P.s- Leonardo Dicaprio owns a beardie named Blizz.

1 comments about The Guide to Owning an Australian Python (The Guide to Owning Series).
- I have a jungle carpet python, Morelia spilota cheynei. The book listed its sci. name as Python spilotus vareigatus cheynei. They have warped their true names, eliminating the Morelia classification. I have seen better info in the Barron's series, which I recommend. Here, the pics are great, but the info is poor. Do not buy.

2 comments about Platies, Keeping & Breeding Them in Captivity.
- This book has great pictures and is good for a beginning aquarist, but it really doesn't have a lot of information specific to platies. I wanted a bit more platy-related info. Again, very nice photos, though.
- This book has lots of fantastic photos in a astunning paper, has good ideas about platies, and more important with this book you will know many things about fishs in general and not only about platies... About platies you will found all it matter...

5 comments about Completely Illustrated Atlas of Reptiles and Amphibians for the Terrarium.
- This is, hands down, the most useful and often-used text in my collection. If you want to know about *any* genus of reptile or amphibian, it's in here somewhere, with sufficient info to at least get a handle on what that group is like. Whenever I run across a name I'm unfamiliar with in a paper, I haul this book out.
That said, it's a bit old, and much of the taxonomy is outdated. However, they also have an index of common and scientific names, so you can find the old name if it's changed. Given that taxonomy changes every time someone sneezes, that's a pretty minor drawback.
Also, it's *HUGE*. Were someone to break into my home, I would have little difficulty blugeoning them to death with this massive tome. It's definitely *not* pocket reading, and you might actually be hard pressed to find bookshelves that can accomodate the size and weight of it. I've had to resort to just keeping it on the floor.
"The Big Red Book", as it's colloquially referred to, is absolutely essential. I've had it since I got my first snake, and my prof, who's been in herpetology for over 30 years, has a copy too.
There's no other word for it but "vital".
- I actually bought this book many years ago and consider it one of the best investments I have ever made. As a taxonomist and herpetologist for the past 15 years it has been the book I could always rely on for a quick, easy to look up reference for what someone else is talking about.
I read many articles, both scientific and general, many times they are not specifically about species I am immediately familiar with. This book has been my lifesaver. All packaged in one (rather hefty) volume in a way that is easily looked up I can find out exactly what someone else is talking about, see a picture, and get a little bit of information about the species. Its does not contain intimate details of each species, but that is not what it should be used for. It is like a big dictionary, but with pictures and a little extra information. I recommend this book not as one of your major texts but as a comprehensive list that will let you know what you are reading about when you are forced to admit you are outside your general knowledge. It will back up all your other readings.
- This book is great both for serious and collectors of all ages. It's common name index allows for simple look up and every kind of reptile and amphibian is in it. There are alot of great photos to help id the animal.
- Probably the most comprehensive atlas of reptiles and amphibians, widely used in pet owners' as well as serious hobbyists' circles. It is arranged alphabetically by scientific name, while the index is arranged by common names. This generously illustrated book (mostly in color) provides general information on snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, toads, salamanders, food animals as well as other terrarium related topics. A must in every herpetoculturist's library.
- This is a very fine book. It includes information on thousands of different herps that proves to be useful when you work at a pet store like I do. Although the info on each species is not very indepth, it does tell you where the species are from thus allowing you to create a naturalistic terrarium.

3 comments about Ball Pythons (Reptile Keepers Guide).
- i bought this book because it was cheap and I needed information before bought my python to see if it was the species for me. This book tells you to do things every experienced reptile keeper has told me not to. I have had my ball python for three years and this book has never come in handy, dont bother with it, get yourself a real handbook. Its really just a skimpy overview of anything to do with bp's.
- Some helpful basic information, but overall, too general. No specifics on temperatures, humidity, what to feed at what age/size, what size/age to start breeding, etc.
- THIS BOOK DOES NOT EXPLAIN IN DETAIL ABOUT THE BALL PYTHON, I HAVE LEARNED MORE FROM THE INTERNET THAN I HAVE FROM THIS BOOK. IT DID NOT ANSWER ANY OF THE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS THAT I HAD AND I ENDED UP PURCHASING ANOTHER. ALTHOUGH IT WAS SLIGHTLY INFORMATIVE, NOT ENOUGH WAS SPECIFIED
