5 comments about The Unpromised Land: The Struggle of Messianic Jews Gary & Shirley Beresford.

  1. I think this book, and the comments about it, highlights the struggle Messianic Jews have struggled with for 1800 years from their Rabbinic brothers, for despite what self-proclaimed anti-missionaries may say, there has always been a remnant of Jews who "kept the commandments of G-d and kept faith in Mashiach, Yeshua." Obviously, as the comments above show, those that practice Rabbinic Judaism have a complete ignorance of what Messianic Jews believe or they misunderstood Moshe himself, for Messianic Jews keep the Torah of Moshe---they just may not necessarily keep the so-called "Oral" Torah of the Rabbis. Ignorance spread by a confusion with Christian theology, which stood in opposition to Messianic theology since the Council of Nicea and Constatine's "converstion" to "Christianity," perpetuates hatred amongst the children of Avraham... amongst brothers. Even if you don't have an interest in the plight of Messianic Jews (Jews that keep the Torah, discard man-made law that contradict Torah, and believe that Yeshua was the Jewish Messiah who never broke the Torah or taught others to do the same despite Christian theology to the contrary), this book is an interesting account of hatred, discrimination, and hyprocracy in the modern world.

  2. It is amazing the treatment that the Beresfords got while attempting to immigrate to Isreal. How the Jewish could be so cold and willing to cannibalize their own simply for embracing Jesus(Y'shua) as the Messiah is simply astounding. Especially when you consider all the turmoil that the Jews as a people have gone through over the centuries. It is quite amazing that they consider it better if a Jew doesn't believe God exists at all rather than if he believes that Jesus died for the sins of the world. (I know of Jews who have MUCH more crazy beliefs and they aren't considered non-Jewish because of it).
This is a great book and will open your eyes to facts about Isreal that you wouldn't believe.

  3. Let's see if I can get this right. They are born Jewish, keep the Jewish traditions and holy days, read the Jewish scriptures (including the ones written by first century Jews), and believe in a Jewish Messiah who was prophesied about in Jewish scriptures. So what's the problem?

Most Christians who understand prophesy clearly know that the Gentiles were the ones who were "grafted in" to the chosen people of God through their faith, not through their lineage(and by "chosen" God meant that He chose to reveal himself through the Jewish people, not that he loves others less). WE Christians are the converts, not vice versa. We are Gentiles who believe in a Jewish Messiah. The Beresfords do a good job of presenting the dilemma faced by Messianic Jews: that both sides will find reasons to reject them. My heart goes out to them.

  4. Please do remember readers that Israel is thankfully still a JEWISH country. Why should they allow those of opposing faiths in to contaminate the truth of what the country is founded on.

Christians and Messianics as you call yoursevles- we do not hate the christians as one reader suggests-quite the contrary- as we are commanded to love. Rather we do hate any false religion that would raise itself up that contradicts the Law that Hashem gave us through Moshe. We must hate idolotry, though we love mankind and let them live the way that each one believes. The problem arose for the Beresfords when they tried to bring a "foreign" doctrine into a land that only allows those that embrace their Jewishness and have not given up their very existance to follow the doctrines of another god.

Is it any wonder that the Beresfords were kicked out of a Jewish country when they were promoting their christian doctrine? Please...be real about this.

Read the book, but keep in mind who the Jews are, what we believe and why the Berefords were asked to leave a county that tries not to contaminate itself with the ideas of false gods.

May Israel continue to be strong against those that oppose the law of Moshe.

  5. This is a great book for explaining the plight of Messianic Jews in Israel. But all you need to do is read the previous 2 reviews to understand the hatred that SOME Jews have for those who have chosen a different path. They haven't reviewed the book, they've simply slammed it because they don't like Messianic Jews. The truth is you can believe ANYTHING you want, or you can believe NOTHING at all and if you were born Jewish, Israel will welcome you with open arms. You can be a follower of any of the dozens of false messiahs throughout Jewish history or you can believe God is a turnip and that's okay! You can even be Muslim and that's all right. But if you believe Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, oh, well that's different!

2 comments about Moravian Women's Memoirs: Their Related Lives, 1750-1820 (Women and Gender in North American Religions).

  1. I bought this book on remainder because I live in Pennsylvania but really never have known much about the Moravians. The memoirs were interesting as documents of spirituality. I ached to know more details about their daily lives, the structure of the hierarchy, the struggles to submit to the requirements of membership in the congregation. The memoirs are moving as the women talk about their ever-growing awareness of their unworthiness of grace but their awareness of the Savior as their friend. The context in which Faull sets each person and the introduction to the whole work as well as the glossary and notes make for a scholarly work with appeal to the layperson. I will share it with friends.

  2. This is a great book it brings to the fore front of historical research not only the moravians who have been overlooked but the Sisters of the faith. THis book does an excelent job of showning the everchaning trends in Moravian Women. Great Book.

  1. Voila, the compacted dithers of mutton & larks! Ecco, predicted lathers of metro & lux! Lo, the monastic matters of mirrors & lakes! Zounds, the hermetic spiels of motor & locks! Behold, the gathered deepistles of monachus & littera! Witness the mighty phrasings of miracle lustrum! All hail the bibliotickles, viva the dublintenders, long live the fortunetells of hoy & halloo! Heed the prophetic warblings of minus & linus! Lament the bombastic tangles of mittwoch & letznacht! Observe the respected nightingales, doves & coulombians. Celebrate the valiantimes scattered by freundlich & freud! Three cheers for the bandied ampersands of max & louie, the mingled missives of joyful eremites.

1 comments about Stories of the Saints.

  1. If you're looking for saints stories to tell children, this book gives the bare minimum. For re-telling you will need to use a lot of creative authorship in order to make the stories "live" for your children. There aren't a lot of books available for saints story re-telling, but by far and away the best is "The Giant at the Ford" by Ursula Synge. It is (of course) out of print, but used copies are available.

5 comments about Is God Pink?: Dying to Heal.

  1. This is a wonderfully inspiring and reassuring story. Mary Jo has given us a generous and lovely gift, sharing so much of her journey. And the writing, with the collaboration of Mary Harper, is superb. I know the writing is very good when I can imagine that I am right there in the experience.

  2. As a psychotherapist and art therapist, I was impressed with how Mary's near-death experience brought her to what we call a "teachable moment," that space in which we suddenly perceive life in a radically different way. The book reinforces the value of connectedness--within ourselves, to our families and friends, and to God, however we might perceive God to be. I found myself grateful for Mary Jo, and the grace that she is able to extend by being present to people she encounters during their teachable moments. This book is short and simply written, yet speaks volumes. I recommend it to anyone in the health profession seeking to understand the connection between health and spirituality.

  3. Mary Jo Rapini's intimate story of suffering and recovering from a brain aneurysm is nothing short of inspirational and speaks of the important role played by family, friends, and health care professionals in the healing process. Even those of us who identify as agnostic or atheist can respect and learn from Rapini's need to put her faith in a God as she bravely confronts her own mortality. Is God Pink? Dying to Heal, is a beautifully written and carefully constructed book. A worthwhile read for anyone who has ever faced a serious health crisis.

  4. It's difficult to say that I 'enjoyed' this book ---- it's hard to read about someone's near death and about cancer and find it enjoyable; but, am so glad that I did read it! Mary Jo's experiences are definitely interesting, heart wrenching, and understandable. I've been telling lots of folks about this book and even bought additional copies to give to people. I would strongly encourage anyone to buy this book!

  5. Mary Jo Rapini's book is a must read for anyone who works with illness, lives with or cares for ailing loves ones, or anyone facing or reluctant to explore one's own mortality. This work left me inspired, hopeful and humbled.
