2 comments about The Preacher's Tale: The Civil War Journal of Rev. Francis Springer, Chaplain, U.S. Army of the Frontier (The Civil War in the West).
- Rev. Springer, a former neighbor of Abraham Lincoln's, was a sensitive observer and careful recorder. His accounts of the men he ministers to are exceptionally moving. This book is an excellent resource for the Civil War scholar, with a highly readable and intelligent introduction. The source notes alone are worth the price.
- The Preacher's Tale: The Civil War Journal Of Rev. Francis Springer, Chaplain, U.S. Army Of The Frontier is an intimate, candid, revealing, deeply personal record of the Civil War which reveals 51-year-old Francis Springer's thoughts and experiences on the nature of war, the meaning of violence, and the role of religion. Enlisting with the Union Army in the fall of 1861, Reverend Spring was with the 10th Illinois Calvary and witnessed the Battle of Prairie Grove in December 1862. Springer was later named post chaplain at Fort Smith where, in addition to preaching and ministering to the troops, he was placed in charge of refugees and displaced victims of the virulent guerrilla warfare which took place in northwest Arkansas. He also wrote articles and columns in the "Fort Smith New Era" under the pseudonym "Thrifton". Springer's appraisals of life in the Army of the Frontier are honest, insightful, and informative. Enhanced with several never-before published photographs, and appendices featuring accounts of six military executions that Springer participated in as a Union Army chaplain, including of previously unpublished last letters home of two rebel soldiers condemned and executed at Fort Smith, as well as a eulogy for Abraham Lincoln, make The Preacher's Tale a very highly recommended and valued addition to the growing body of Civil War accessible memoirs and biographies.

1 comments about Osho: Autobiografia De Un Mistico Espiritualmente Incorrecto.

1 comments about On Repentance: The Thought and Oral Discourses of Rabbi Joseph Dov Soloveitchik.
- This work is a pioneering one in bringing the teaching of the Rav before the world. It has been followed by many other works of the Rav's teaching but still remains a valuable one on the subject of 'Teshuvah'.

3 comments about George Washington: Man of Prayer and Courage (The Sowers) (The Sowers).
- This is an excellent, interesting, easy to read biography. Though it is written primarily for the young reader, it is fascinating to a history buff of any age. The author clearly did her research and did an excellent job of representing the spiritual life of George Washington.
- Starting with George Washington as a boy, this book follows him throughout his life. It focuses on his early military career fighting with the British against the French and Indians, working his plantation, and responding when his new country needed a general and first President.
Unfortunately, this book aimed at kids could have been better. The narrative is uneven, making it hard to follow how much time has passed between stories we're reading. Furthermore, the style is choppy with too many simple sentences strung together. On the other hand, there are some thrilling stories from his days fighting in armies that will keep young readers interested. And his writing is used creatively to show his belief in God without interrupting the flow. George Washington was a great man we can all learn from. This biography gives some interesting information and a good overview of his life and times. Unfortunately, it's not quite polished enough to get a full recommendation.
- George Washington was born on a snowy day, Febuary 11(22 on new calendar), 1732. From then on he was a devout christian and a great leader. His father taught him how to ride a horse, shoot a rifle, and hired a tutor to prepare him for his schooling in Appleby. Appleby was an elegant boarding school in England. When 11 year-old George was visiting his cousin's mansion on the Chotank River about 20 miles away from hsi home in Ferry Farm, a servant from his home burst onto the amnsion lawn and told him that his father was deathly ill. Shortly after he arrived his father died. This was only the childhood part on George but the book goes on about how he got interested in surveying, how he became a great military leader, and how he eventually became the U.S.'s first presedent. The book showed his great leadership and his commitment to the Lord and the teachings of the Bible. Overall it was a great book and made you experience George Washington and his beliefs.

3 comments about Iran.
- Mark Bradley has given a wonderful text concerning the spiritual state of Iran, however, this is more than just a book about missionary opportunity within a nation of people starved for options--it is a strong source of information concerning Iranian history.
"Iran: Open Hearts in a Closed Land" gives reason for the recent openness to Christianity in the region by providing a concise but thorough history of Persian culture and Shi'a Islam. Indeed, this text should be a reference not only for the missions-minded, but for anyone--Christian, Muslim, Secular, etc.--who desires to expand his or her knowledge about both Iran as an Islamic state and as a nation of Persian people.
This book is truly readable and an excellent jumping-off point for a study of Iran's history, government, and culture.
- Excellent! This book is well worth reading. In fact, for anyone who really wants to know the inside scoop on Iran today I would say that this is a must read. The author certainly displays a thorough knowledge of his subject, but he doesn't present it in a way that is pedantic or sensational. This book is very readable, something not always found in today's market. I have read the book twice already, and plan to read it again. It has been extremely helpful. A case in point: Just a few nights ago I was involved in a discussion regarding Iran and the Christian church there. The question was asked why so many Muslims are coming to Christ in Iran. I was able to give sound, well-grounded reasons based on what I had read in this book. Many thanks to Mark Bradley for this needed work.
- `Open Hearts in a Closed Land' is an excellent book regarding current Christian mission in Iran in light of the backdrop of Iranian history. Many of the `Christian' books that are written about Iran these days differ little from a call to war. Often, a few sentences from Iranian political leaders are pulled out and a case for regime change is presented. This book does not fit this description. This educated book does not take a political position, but rather highlights how the people of Iran are open to the message of the Gospel while living, or even because of living, in what is often presented as a bed of radicalism. Those who receive their information about Iran from newspaper clippings and television sound bytes will appreciate this deeper and more nuanced view of the current landscape. These same people will be shocked by the discovery of information of the explosive growth of Iranian church- the light shining in the darkness. `Open Hearts in a Closed Land' is a necessary book that is capable of opening up closed Christian hearts in `open lands' to their emerging brothers and sisters in Iran. Hopefully, this book will inspire much prayer and work in the often misconstrued country of Iran. Those who are not concerned with Christianity in Iran will still benefit from the clear and concise recent history of Iran.

1 comments about The Rainmaker: The Story of Venerable Ngagpa Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche.
- The Rain Maker is an extraordinary book in every sense. Many will read it as a wonderful flight of fancy into the "Magic and Magicians" territory of Asian journeys, many with a more complete background to this book will recognize that this book as the authenticate and true account of a Tibetan Lama of the old school of Buddhism - telling us his life story. In either case the journey through the book, narrative and personal life story is truly remarkable.
The book treats the extraordinary with a matter of fact attitude that turns it into the mundane - this creates an intimacy and a closeness which gives the book its power. We are told of the Zombies that the Nagakpa must conquer, the fierce onslaught of black magicians that must be destroyed and the ardeous reality of the life of a wandering Magician and Master of the Tibetan Old school of Buddhism. If this book were fiction it would be one of the best fiction books I have read. As Dr Marsha Woolf presents us with it authoritively as fact it calls into question the world we live in. As we read our notions of the world collapse just like the dark forces that Lama Yeshe Dorje deals with in his humbly presented account of the world he lived in.
