5 comments about The Gun Digest Book of the Glock.
- Previous reviews appear to be concerned with the first edition of this book. Despite this, the criticisms presented by those reviews are valid for the second edition. A significant portion of the book concerns the 1911 Government Model in its various incarnations. While I can appreciate the comparisons between the Glock and the 1911--I also have a fondness for the 1911--there really is too much time spent in this area. Another point to make is how much of the book is devoted to various competitions. Many books concerning firearms tend to lean heavily toward promoting shooting competitions. Nothing wrong with this if that is your interest, however, if competition sports is not your particular interest (it's not mine), another significant portion of this book will be wasted on you.
Glocks are simple, straightforward firearms that don't allow for much in the way of modification or gunsmithing improvements. If you write a book about them, I suppose you have to digress into other areas of general firearms interests. Otherwise, the book would be rather short. There's not much you can say after saying that Glocks work great right out of the box, seldom stop working no matter how they are abused, generally are easy to shoot well with minimum training and they have been a phenomenon in their acceptance by shooters worldwide. Oh, yeah...you could say they are kind of ugly. That's about the only real criticism you can come up with for the Glock.
I like the book although I admit that I did skip over some sections and I only skimmed through others.
- I couldn't top the the 3 previous reviews, they were accurate. I have the revised 2003 book which retails for $27.99 and I bought it at a local gun shop for $25.20. I wish I had checked Amazon's prices first.
- I have read all the books available for the Glock line of pistols and this one is easily the best. The author covers history, maintenance, all the models, and the pictures are excellent.
If you are going to buy just one book about Glocks I highly recommend this be the one, it IS that good.
But beware; if you are not presently a Glock owner you may find, after spending time with this book, that you just have to have one.
- Pat Sweeney writes the best overall book for the firearms industry. His attention to detail and articulation is some of the best work when it comes to general firearms knowledge. The only other book that covers the Glock this well is the Ptooma Guide to the Glock. This book in comparison to the Ptooma book, well that is kind of hard. Sweeney writes as a general knowledge book, while the Ptooma book was written by guys that LOVE Glocks. Sweeney is a 1911 and revolver man, But who wouldn't trust the word of someone that took 3rd place in World Shoot XIV in Standard Revolver? I think he knows what he is talking about. You need a Glock book? Look no further. You found it.
- My review on this one is going to be a bit more critical than most. This is probably one of the worst books on Glock pistols that I have read to date. The author is constantly comparing Glocks to 1911's, and other types of pistols. The book is also loaded with plenty of non-Glock images. Mr. Sweeney, I bought this book because I like the Glock, not because I wanted to see plenty of photos of 1911's... ad nauseam. Perhaps Mr. Sweeney should stick to books writing books like his "Gun Digest Book of the 1911", as he has done Glock more than a bit of injustice.
You know, I recently purchased Massad Ayoob's excellent book "The Gun Digest Book of Sig-Sauer". Mr. Sweeney, please take note... Massad's book on the Sig is FILLED with useful information and photos related to his book's title... SIG-SAUER PISTOLS!
Sorry, but I must recommend a pass on Sweeney's "sort of Glock" book!

4 comments about Early American Pattern Glass.
- Found two patterns of EAPG glass,I've been stumped by, within five minutes.Already paid for itself.
- Early American Pattern Glass is a reprint of Alice Hulett Metz's book first published in 1958 and considered by many to be the "bible" of pattern glass collecting. The Early American Pattern Glass Society contributed by forming a committee of eight experienced collectors and dealers to review and revise the content. The format and Metz's comments are intact, however, prices are updated and new information concerning the patterns are grouped together making the differences and similarities more apparent. There are 1500 identified patterns(more listed than in any other book) with 900 of these patterns photographed. Some of these are very slight variations of the patterns. For identification purposes, I found the book to be very helpful.
- Alice Hulett Metz's Early American Pattern Glass provides updated values along with black and white photos of about 1500 patterns. From uses and terminology to patterns and plate numbers, this is THE item of choice for any early glass collector.
- THIS BOOK IS ALMOST ALL PHOTOS OF GOBLETS, VERY FEW PHOTOS OF ANYTHING ELSE,THE PHOTOS ARE POOR IN MANY EXAMPLES, THE PRICES SEEM VERY UNREAL. RUTH WEBB LEES HANDBOOK OF EARLY AMERICAN PRESSED GLASS PATTERNS IS MUCH MORE INFORMATIVE AND HAS BETTER PHOTOS IT WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN THE THIRTIES. THE BEST NEW BOOK IVE FOUND ON PATTERN GLASS IS THE COLLECTORS ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PATTERN GLASS. BY MOLLIE HELEN MCCAIN. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU BUY MOLLIES BOOK, YOU WONT BE DISAPOINTED WITH IT, AS I WAS WITH THIS ONE.

- I was happy with the book and how quickly I received it. Thank You
- I have every issue of this guide series. Some from the original British publish. There are two Miller guides this is the original and but has an international feel mostly. It mainly English and Eurpoean if you get the English version and added more American for the American version. The one selling here is the American verson. This is the most standard antique price guide around. Base on auction listing and dealer asking & sold prices. It a professional guide and Miller has other guides for focus themes.

3 comments about 19th Century Fishing Lures: A Collector's Guide to U.S. Lures Manufactured Prior to 1901.
- Arlan Carter's 19th Century Fishing Lures is outstanding both as a collector's guide and as a fisherman's general reading reference. Chapters document lures manufactured before 1901 and provide color photos and histories organized by manufacturer. A 'must' for the avid fisherman, and a nice gift package.
- This is an outstanding book for anyone who is interested in early metal, "spinner" type lures. Up until now, metal lures have been a largely overlooked and under-rated area of tackle collecting. In his book, Mr. Carter combines a wonderful collection of pictures with detailed information. This is a real gem of a book and should definitely be added to every tackle collector's reference library.
- I've read them all but this book is the best. Not only does it offer values and great illustrations it also provides a snapshot of the lure maker. You will be amazed at what you didn't know about these ancient lures.

5 comments about Care Bears Collectibles: An Unauthorized Handbook and Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- Firstly, this is not a book done by an expert or advanced collector (for proof, type in the authour's name, and you will see she has penned more than 50 books on collectibles.) In fact, there are several items in this book -including a My Little Pony play set!- that have been mislabeled as Care Bear items, as well as various home-made items being considered on par with factory made items.
There are many photos of items in less-than-pristine shape, not to mention the photos aren't very professionally done, leading me to conclude this book exists merely because it's filling a niche that should have been filled by a proper Care Bear collector and expert. Lastly, don't even expect this to give you accurate lists of what is out there - it's essentially just a hodge podge of photos of a Care Bear collection, and I may add, of nothing terribly rare or unusual. A cursory glance at eBay will yield better photos and rarer items than this book will. But, there's nothing else that I know of out there, so if you want a Care Bear collectibles book, you are basically stuck with this one until something better comes along.
- I bought the Care Bear book mainly to see what else was available besides just the plushes and posables, however, when I went to look at the minis---there are none of the Care Bear Cousin minis pictured or even mentioned! I know the pics come out of a private collection but a mention of these would be helpful. Also, there was not info on all the posables' accessories! There was no mention of the British Bears or the ultra rare Care Bear Cousins. Prices were not too terribly out of line in comparison to what I have sold items for in the past. On a positive note, pics were nice and the author showed lots of neat Care Bear items.
- I just want to say that I think it's about time someone made a book about Care Bear collectibles. I have been a huge fan of the Care Bears and the Care Bear Cousins for a long time, and I'm glad someone finally made a book with buying info about the Care Bear collectibles. I've been wanting to buy Care Bear collectibles for a long time, so I'm really glad I can finally find out how to buy them.
- This book is the best ever! Don't listen to "rainbowdragon" about not containing the right price! The author said "Prices may vary".This book contains over 500 color photos about Care Bears.Hurry! Get a copy while supplies last!!! I really enjoyed reading this book because I have always loved Care Bears and I love to learn about them!
- This book is very well done. It is extreamly accurate and has helped me through some hard times selecting how much to pay for a bear. It's a great book for Care Bear Collecters both Young and Old.

5 comments about The Collector's Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin China: Reference and Value Guide.
- I bought this book quite a while ago. At that time, this was about the only book on the HOMER LAUGHLIN subject.
It all started when I had inherited a beautiful set of Homer Laughlin "Georgian" fine china, and I wanted to know more (& get more pieces). Unfortunately, fifteen+ years ago, there weren't too many H.L. china collectors and/or identification books on this subject, (aside from the avid FIESTA WARE collectors).
Needless to say, I never did find more pieces to my H.L. china set, since the H.L. Georgian pattern had sooooo many various flower styles (ie: since the early production of the 1940's Georgian pattern).
However, the thing that I did find most helpful from this book was that it gave a nice history of the company. I was very excited to get any information on the early history of this china company.
But as far as finding a H.L. book with all the patterns and styles, that never came about. Even the later re-prints of this book did not have all the flower styles of many of the H.L. fine china patterns.
(By the way, REPLACEMENTS INC, has no early H.L. chinas either. Thus, the older pieces are definetly hard to find).
Anyhow,if you are interested in a Homer Laughlin book that gives a nice history of the company, then you might find this book helpful.
But if you have inherited a specific early H.L. china pattern, as I did, then you may be out of luck in finding more information about it.
The reason being, is that H.L. changed their flower patterns so often and also it really depended upon the store that carried the H.L. fine chinas. (FIESTA was a different story though, since FIESTA was issued for many years. And plus, there are so many other books specific to just FIESTA, that this book only touches on the FIESTA subject, but mainly focuses on H.L's history and various other H.L. china patterns).
- After my aunt's demise several years ago, I was the recipient of some odd pieces of old china. I wondered as to the age of the pieces, and so I went to the Internet. What do you think I found. You're right, my china was listed in the book that I purchased through Amazon.com.
Thank you very much.
- DISAPPOINTED THAT THE BOOK DID NOT GO BACK TO THE EARLY HOMER LAUGHLIN. LITTLE INFO ABOUT VARIOUS MARKS. NOT COMPLETE ENOUGH FOR THE PRICE.
- I recently aquired some Homer Laughlin china and was unable to identify the patterns. This book helped me tremendously! The pictures and descriptions were very useful. Also, there is alot of trivia about the company and some of the designers. I highly recommend this book.
- This is a very well organized reference for those collectors of Homer Laughlin who enjoy the "other" HL pottery (other than Fiesta, of course). Jasper has put a great deal of effort into categorizing the various patterns, and includes hundreds of photos. Each pattern has a little history that goes with it, and often the backstamp (mark) will be shown alongside. She includes an extensive history of the pottery, discusses the difficulties in identifying certain patterns, and includes pages from some of the old catalogs. All in all an admirable work and well worth the purchase price.

2 comments about Ty Plush Animals 2000 Collector's Value Guide.
- I just got this book in the mail today, and I must say, I'm impressed with everything!! First of all, I live in Canada, but it still arrived BEFORE the estimated time given! My day just got better when I opened the book. I've been collecting the Ty products for almost a year now, and this is the best combination of information I've seen yet! It's nicely colored, easy to use, and has all the information you'll need to keep track of a collection! Although new beanies have hit the market since this was published, I still highly recommend this book for all the background information it gives.
- If you are looking for a great beanie collectors guide, this is the one.Very informative and easy to understand. This book has it all. Pictures, prices and information on all the TY beanies. If you are a collector looking for information, look no further and grab up this book.
