- This book had all black and white pictures, and almost all of them showed the item in its package. I needed a book to help me IDENTIFY individual figures, which this book DEFINATELY DID NOT DO. I immediately returned the book.
- This was a very informative book. I liked the fact it went back a while to older figures I am missing, as well as all the hints and thips along the way. Kudos to Amazon for featuring this book!!

2 comments about Miller's: Antiques: Pocket Fact File (Miller's Pocket Fact File).
- This book is a great resource to have for both the novice and the professional. It lists the numerous marks and signs, together with tips on all areas of antiquities. This is especially valuable, as most dealers, while quite knowledgeable, tend to specialize in one particular area. This is a concise book that is inexpensive and can easily fit in your pocket. This is particularly helpful when you run across that peculiar silver service with the strange markings and don't have your library of reference books with you. It would be an asset for any glove box as well.
- This is very handy for the newer antiquer and even for those that have been around for a bit since one person can't know everything about all things. It fits nicely in one's pocket or purse and with the cover taken off is a nice subtle black so you won't look to obvious as you check;-) The only thing I would like to see more of is pricing but it's not a bad little book for the price and it may save you some money along the way too.

5 comments about Blue Book of Dolls & Values (Blue Book Dolls and Values).
- Jan and Howard Foulke did a superb job with this book. I just gave the book to my mother, who has hundreds of dolls, and she loved it. Keep up the good work. Kathrine Peterson/author Dolls Aren't Just for Kids, The Ultimate Guide for Doll Lovers
- First this isn't an ID guide and no one should approach it as such. Books for the purposes of identification abound. The Blue Book assumes you have ID'ed your doll. Second, this is a guide and more importantly it is a HISTORY of values (prices paid at shows, auctions, etc.) since the last one was published. The market has a way of fluctuating and the book is not gospel, just a guide. If you're buying, you can expect to pay more or less than the book indicates. Keep that history part in mind...! If you're selling... well, these are "retail" prices by-in-large. Selling to a dealer will never net you retail. The Blue Book is still the best of its sort around!
- This book will help all collectors, experienced to novice, to identify and price dolls. Set up simply, it's easy to find the doll you're looking for. If you can only buy one doll book, buy this one. It's the book doll prices are based on.
- I normally enjoy Jan's works on dolls. However, I was disappointed by the lack of documentation on such important features as marks and identification of manufacturers. I realize no book can be the definitive documentation on all dolls ever produced, but had Jan included more specific information, it would have eliminated some matches for me. As such, even for dolls I might have considered mine to be, I couldn't match or dismiss them.
- The Blue Book contains a terrific amount of information for all collectors! It is a guide, and market conditions greatly influence any price - so prices do vary. A great carry along to any auction, or sale! I wish that the Antique and Modern doll information would be split into two books - as I find it a bit distracting having to wade through information I am not interested in. Hopefully in the future this can be done and there will be a strictly antique and a separate modern value guide.
All-in-all, a fantastic reference guide to prices and identification.

3 comments about The Comic Art Price Guide.
- Nestled within this August 2000 guide to original comic art is a small section on underground comix, approximately less than 1/6th of the book, which was intended be a 'market check' and supplement to Kennedy (1982) for a subset of popular underground titles (e.g. Freak Brothers, Zap Comix, Air Pirates, Gothic Blimp Works, etc.). Strengths: first attempt by anyone to capture increase in values for high grade and scarce underground comix, good essay on UGs and importance of Zap Comix #1. Weaknesses: no information on printing determination; only small subset of UGs, errors/omissions.
- My experience and knowledge is limited to the original comic art and underground comics sections, though I wouldn't bill myself as a great authority on either. However, even I can spot dozens of factual errors in both sections, as well as many surprises found among the values given for comix. The well-known first underground comic, "Adventures of Jesus" is not even listed! Granted, Underground Comix are a very complex area of comic book history and collecting, having a variety of printers and publishers with the various editions. His guide should at least list all printings (in the interest of documentation, even if their value is minimal), and add more historical info on significant titles, including creators. I won't even go into his lack of intelligable writing ability. Surprisingly poor effort from an accomplished expert. All in all, a frustratingly incomplete and ameteurish "Waist!." Get the out-of-print Jay Kennedy guide instead.
- The Author has taken a vast and nearly impenatrable subject, Comic and related Original Art and subjected his audience to a Narrow Workingmans view of a more complex and multitextured subject; Despite a life long consultancy within the economics of the Comics Field, the Author has narrow focused his opinion into an end-all-of-knowledge that disservices broader subject; it becomes obvious that the Updated and Expanded format of this PRICE GUIDE attempts to fill and redefine further areas with the same limits of success as the 1992 Price Guide. The prior 1992 Guide failed only in its limits of information: Without providing data base of cataloging Auctions and Private sales lists, these guides are only Organizational Catalogs for experienced, and Gee Whiz Look At All This Neat stuff to Newbie (Wanna be?) Collectors. The collecting community has already emailed itself insensible with observations of 'I'd pay $1000 a page OVER the guide listed prices on **** Silver Age Pages by ---- (artist);etc. Maybe the Third Guide will Be the Charm; This one needed another dozen or two of Consultants; and a MUCH MUCH expanded level of expertise and Overview. The greyed and unfocused reuse of images and data from the First guide also cheapened the whole look of this; and makes the whole production look unprofessional.

5 comments about Fake, Fraud, or Genuine?: Identifying Authentic American Antique Furniture.
- After we moved into our house (and jad no furniture to speak of) I decided to take the time to buy antiques and find really cool "stuff". This became quite a fun adventure and boy have I learned a lot. This book was one ofthe first that I picked up because I was noticing so much reproduction furniture in the seemingly antiques stores. After awhile you can just look at something and see if its reproduction or not but this book really helped me in fguring that out - fron talking about different types of wood that were popular in different eras, to what to look for in joints/workmanship, to identifying original upholstry, and I could go on and on. This is just an incredible resource and the pictures/drawings that are throughout are fantastic. It's like sitting on the shoulder of an antiquing guru as you walk through a shop and they are able to go right to the key indicators to see if its original or not. The writing style os fun and easy to read too. Excellent book.
- Before you spend a lot of money on antique furniture buy this book and study it like a text book. This well written, well researched guide will save you from being made a fool of or cheated.
- I worked hard to really read this book. It has been worth it, because it covers the basic story on how to examine a piece of furniture to determine whether or not it is really old, or even if it is old, whether or not the piece itself is original as seen today, or has been pieced together from several incomplete pieces of old furniture, or even other sources of old pieces of wood. It is fairly fascinating, but it is also a lot like studying. I seem to be coming into contact with antiques through inheritance, and while this book hasn't told me much about the source of the pieces I have, I at least now know enough to turn my furniture upside down, and inside out to find out just where it may have been before it came to me! You have to really look at the many photographs (not every one was perfectly clear no matter how hard I looked -- 1 out of 30 were unclear I estimate) while reading the narrative. And I had never realized the extent to which 18th and 19th century pieces are researched for provenence, including looking through very old advertisements in newspapers, etc., to find the names of furniture makers of the past. Quite technical, but worth the effort.
- I was given this book when I first became interested in antique furniture around 5 years ago. I am an antique dealer and avid collector now, and I still use it frequently as a reference. Although it focuses on 18th c. American furniture, the concepts apply to all periods and types.
This is a great book! I highly recommend it to all collectors.
- Long overdue, this book provides the reader with the skills needed to correctly date American furniture. Numerous clear, closeup photos help the reader to understand exactly what to look for when examining antique furniture.

5 comments about Antique & Vintage Clothing: A Guide to Dating & Valuation of Women's Clothing 1850 to 1940.
- I would rate this a very dangerous book, as it contains a lot of incorrect information and also suggests - through pictures and the like - that antique clothing can be worn by modern people. The photographs some admittedly beautiful garments are amateurish, a number of garments and accessories - in particular bonnets - are incorrectly dated etc.
Total waste of money and not a good starting point for the serious collector. Kay
- Diane Snyder-Haug is a one-of-a-kind author, with an eye for style as well as a brain for history. . .This book should be mandatory for all students in design and fashion. . .Wish she were an instructor at MY school. Does she have an e-mail address?
- I was dissapointed in this book. The historical photos and clothing are great to see but unfortunately many are out of focus and over or under exposed. The author does not reference her sources for the clothing and as a result I find it hard to trust her dating methods. I would not recommend this as a professional reference book for the historical costumer.
- This is an excellent book! I have read it over and over! The color photos are fantastic. The author gives a clear, easy to understand overview in each chapter. The value guide seems to be accurate. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is studying vintage clothing!
- I love to recreate Victorian clothing. I have never come across a book with such clear photographs of clothing, undergarments, and hats. I also try to intergrate Victorian fashion into todays fashions and this book is an excellent guide.
