1. This is a gorgeous book. Venini's records burned quite a few years ago in a studio fire, but most catalog pages are represented here. A definitive history of Venini's fabulous glass from the art deco days through the '80s. Photography shows the examples of styles through the decades. Carlo Scarpa designed glass for Venini in the '30s and '40s. Beautiful art glass that is World Class Art.

1. This is a brand new year 2001 book with more than 400 large, full color, sharp photos of every type of advertising thermometer. Values are year 2001. There's not a lot of text in this softbound, small format book, but it's loaded with beautiful pictures of this popular collectible. Major topics include: agriculture, automotive, beverage, food, funeral and ambulance, healthcare, industry, and tobacco. The smaller size makes it handy to take with you when you shop for these items. Collectors will find it of value.

1. I actually met Dr. Smith at the Creek Chub Show in Garret, Indiana. I purchased his book there and have enjoyed it ever since. Smith actually grew up in Garret and offers insight on the community and company that is priceless. Make this a part of your lure resource library today. It is truely a great source of lure information. It sets a standard for all Creek Chub publications to follow. Enjoy the book, at a great price.



2. I really wasn't very interested in collecting old and antique fishing lures until I read this book. There is really so much more to the hobby that I diddn't know...



3. If you are an avid lure collector or just starting out, this book is a MUST. The photos and history of the lures are a fantastic guide. The quality of the book itself is also excellent. I'm glad to have this book as part of my refference library.

5 comments about Glass Toothpick Holders: Identification & Values.

1. I recently bought a 74 piece lot of toothpick holders at an estate sale. This book helped me identify several of them. The cross-referencing notes gave me a lot of info that I would not have had. I really enjoy this book.



2. This book is a gold mine for collectors of old and reproduced American-made toothpick holders! Not only does it have excellent photos and/or drawings, it also gives a brief history of many glass makers in the late 1880s to the present time. Also lists original manufacturer, original colors, reproduced colors and the reproduction company. I've been able to verify and/or identify almost all of my thirty or so toothpick holder collection. Fabulous book, highly recommended!
   
   



3. I bought this book because another reviewer said it had all the good pictures of the first edition plus more, and was a must have. (I should have put more stock in her "one star" rating than in her description!) Since I didn't have the first edition, it seemed to be a good bet. It IS a beautiful book! It pictures nearly every holder listed. Some of the pictures could be more clear, but overall, it is a good job. It lists the holders alphabetically by company. Listing by design characteristics would make it easier to find and identify holders. HOWEVER, the holders listed are nearly all late 19th to beginning of the 20th centuries. There is a VERY SMALL section on foreign and modern holders. This needs to be expanded greatly to be useful. I had an entire box full of holders, but could only identify two of them, and one of those was a modern reproduction for which the authors gave no values. So I still have no idea if it is worth anything. A 5-star book if you are looking for a nice coffee table book, but not of much help to the actual collector unless you know you only have 100-year-old holders.



4. This book has all the great toothpicks and pictures of the first
   book. The pictures have been redone and are brighter and clearer.
   Plus there are many new toothpicks and pictures for some that were just drawings in the first book. There is also a new contempory toothpick section and a section on foreign toothpicks.
   I think the authors would have a grandslam if they would of expanded the section on newer reprodutions by the newer companies
   and included information on how to rate the condition and how the condition affects value. Great must own for toothpick collectors.



5. This is a wonderful book ... for collectors of toothpicks specifically, but also for anyone who collects and/or deals in early pattern glass. Beautiful photos, great historical info on the old glass companies, and reliable and well-organized presentation of all the information one generally seeks in a collectibles price/pattern identification guide.

   I've often used this book to identify toothpicks, but also found it great for identifying other pattern glass pieces ... The photos really show off the pattern detail, and the (many!!!) accompanying line illustrations are extremely helpful, too. Also, since it's organized by company, if I know who made something but have no idea what it's called, this is the first book I reach for.

1. Every collector or shop owner should have a copy of this book. The bible for rookie cards, which i refer to about 15 times a day.
   Can't wait for an update edition soon to cover from 2006 on.

1. Jan and Howard Foulke did a superb job with this book. I just gave the book to my mother, who has hundreds of dolls, and she loved it. Keep up the good work. Kathrine Peterson/author Dolls Aren't Just for Kids, The Ultimate Guide for Doll Lovers



2. First this isn't an ID guide and no one should approach it as such. Books for the purposes of identification abound. The Blue Book assumes you have ID'ed your doll. Second, this is a guide and more importantly it is a HISTORY of values (prices paid at shows, auctions, etc.) since the last one was published. The market has a way of fluctuating and the book is not gospel, just a guide. If you're buying, you can expect to pay more or less than the book indicates. Keep that history part in mind...! If you're selling... well, these are "retail" prices by-in-large. Selling to a dealer will never net you retail. The Blue Book is still the best of its sort around!



3. This book will help all collectors, experienced to novice, to identify and price dolls. Set up simply, it's easy to find the doll you're looking for. If you can only buy one doll book, buy this one. It's the book doll prices are based on.



4. I normally enjoy Jan's works on dolls. However, I was disappointed by the lack of documentation on such important features as marks and identification of manufacturers. I realize no book can be the definitive documentation on all dolls ever produced, but had Jan included more specific information, it would have eliminated some matches for me. As such, even for dolls I might have considered mine to be, I couldn't match or dismiss them.



5. The Blue Book contains a terrific amount of information for all collectors! It is a guide, and market conditions greatly influence any price - so prices do vary. A great carry along to any auction, or sale! I wish that the Antique and Modern doll information would be split into two books - as I find it a bit distracting having to wade through information I am not interested in. Hopefully in the future this can be done and there will be a strictly antique and a separate modern value guide.
   
   All-in-all, a fantastic reference guide to prices and identification.
