1 comments about Old Magazines with Year 2003 Price Guide.
- Sorry to say this but this booklet is very superficial and incomplete and not always correct.
Its 'all-encompassing' title is misleading, as it only lists a snippet of the thousands of old magazine titles that were published.
The titles mentioned have no description, like what publishers published each magazine, what the content is focusing on, for what market/customer the magazine was meant, what happened with the magazine (sold/discontinued). No frequency nor numbers of copies issued are mentioned.
The only information that is mentioned for each title is:
- title (not always what changes of title)
- years (but incomplete)
- price ranges (but usually too modest, on the low side, so inaccurate).
What do I mean by the problem with the mentioned prices? An example illustrates it best:
Harper's Weekly journals from 1866-1899 have been known to fetch much higher prices than the stated $6-12 (well over $50), sometimes because of engravings by Frederic Remington or of Winslow Homer being in them, sometimes just because of important historical events first being mentioned in those issues.
There is no mention on where and when these prices where realized, nor for what condition of magazine the price was paid (all this influences the price enormously).
Some cover images have been added, but only in b/w and randomly, so without method.
Conclusion: One can do much better just by browsing on the Internet.

3 comments about Standard Guide to 1:18 Scale Die-Cast Cars (Standard Catalog).
- Great book, This is what I have been looking for. I was able to find all of my 1:18 scale cars in this book and put a value on them.
- This has to be the worst price guide I have ever seen. Forget about the values not even being close, the Ertl listing has so many errors its pathetic. Several of the cars listed are 1/43, Not 1/18, and are listed as 1/18, colors listed that were never made it goes on and on.
Sorry but it just don't cut it.
- After waiting for more than 9 months to get this book I was very disappointed after using Cast-car publication by Dan Boyd. The descriptions were very short and in most cases uninformative. I looked up 20 cars immediately from Ertl, Exact detail for Lane, Carousel, and Burago and Supercars (NO AutoArt) only to find 6 out of 20 and these are older than 2001 and could not be found. Very disappointing. All models did not have photos as Cast-Car Publications and the descriptions and details are sketchy or non existent, which is one of the values of the Cast-Car Publication. It does have more 1:18 scale models than any other Manual at this time and the $ VALUES that were assigned I found to be from a little low to extremely low even for an eBay auction. Some of the values assigned to very limited edition cars that even by todays standards are rare or hard to find are lower than what they sold new for and are bringing more than the values given to them in this publication. For example 1969 Grumpy's Toy Camaro SSC, 1969 Yenko Nova #1 Issue, Yenko Camaros #'s 1 & #2 are all listed at a ridiculous $60.00, the GMP Grumpys Toy Nova is also listed at $60.00, and Lanes 1967 Grumpy's Toy is listed as a $60.00 value. I WOULD BUY ANY OF THESE AT THE VALUE STATED IN THIS GUIDE AS MANY AS I COULD GET MY HANDS ON AND MAKE GREAT MARK-UP. WHERE DID THEY GET THESE VALUES??? These are only a few of the many glaring errors I found in an initial 30 minute review. Except for photos in the guide I found it exteremely lacking in why I made the purchase. I'm patiently waiting for the next issue of Cast-car which will include many more manufacturers than just Ertl.

4 comments about Collectors Encyclopedia of Russel Wright: Identification & Values (Collectors Encyclopedia of Russel Wright).
- We've been collecting RW since 1998, and have hundreds of hard to find and many one of a kind pieces.
Pros:
-Some new photos.
-The most comprehensive author of Russel Wright, covering all designs from all eras, including furniture and plastic
-Detailed price guides
-History and chronology of lines based on extensive research
Cons:
-Due to wide scope of the book, it is fairly easy to find incorrect information on pieces, prices, and other data.
-Truncated some interesting information from 2nd edition, including photos of very rare items that we collect
Neutral:
-Moved prices to back (for easier reference?).
Bottom line: 2 stars for accuracy, 4 stars for breadth, 3 stars for depth. Thus the average rating. If you seriously collect RW and do not have either the 2nd or 3rd edition of this book, you should buy this as without doubt this is certainly better than other RW books (and we have several others), but again not necessarily a must have for those with the 2nd edition.
- I just started collecting Russel Wright dishes, and was looking for a definitive reference guide to help key out the pieces I had. I thought this book had a lot of helpful information about determining pattern and manfacturing locations, but I was a bit disappointed overall. Though the cover of the book features only pottery, the book itself has examples of all that Russel Wright created in his long, prolific career-- all the way down to the radios and lamps. It would be great for the diehard RW fan, but I wished it just focussed on the pottery.
- I am so happy to have gotten this book. I knew little-to-nothing about Wright, and Ann Kerr's book lays out all kinds of information about the man, the artist, and his art. I haven't had much of a problem without an index, as she has all the information chaptered out, and it is all easy to access. The accompanying photos are excellent and there are many. She also explains any areas which may be ambiguous, such as color, size and shape anomalies. Due to getting this book, I often know more about the pieces I find than the dealers do, as she tries to fit in every piece of information that she has, on every aspect of the collectible items. I love this book!
- Packed with information, this book is cumbersome to use since it doesn't have an index.

4 comments about The 3rd 100 Best Things I've Sold on Ebay...Ka-Ching! My Story Continues by Lynn Dralle The Queen of Auctions (The 100 Best Things I've Sold on Ebay).
- First off, I have to say that if you are expecting a how-to book on selling on eBay, this is not your book, although the author does periodically reveal some of her secrets. But if you are looking for a great traveling companion, you will not be disappointed, as each story is one page long, allowing you to read in spurts if you'd like. Like the 2nd book in this series, this one is a fun read. Lynn's engaging personality really shines through in her writing. Her chattiness really adds to the charm of the book. It's fascinating to see what people will pay for an item from a garage sale. The old adage that "one man's junk is another man's treasure" couldn't apply more! Lynn's skill at weaving her personal stories, about her eBay business and her family, esp her beloved grandmother, makes this book immensely enjoyable and hard to put down. Additionally, the simplicity of Lynn's eBay methods may just inspire the reader to get up and start selling on eBay!
- Lynn Dralle does not lose steam in her 3rd book of 100 great things. Because it is essentially 100 short "stories" you can read as you have time. Since she teaches with laughter and sometimes touching stories I find the lessons easier to remember. While it gives ideas on how to do things, do not buy this as an eBay "HOW TO" book. She has a few of those too:-)
- Gave this as a gift to a family member. They say this book had excellent, extremly helpful information for helping them achieve e-bay power seller status. Thanks for the outstanding, informative writing!
- The 3rd 100 Best Things is another installment of examples of Ebay sales done by Lynn Dralle. This is the first book by her I have read, so I do not know what the other titles are like.
The book contains 100 items sold on the Ebay and:
1. The story of how they were obtained (estate sale, inheritance, garage sale, flea market, church charity sale, etc.).
2. Starting and winning bid totals.
3. Number of times the item was viewed on Ebay.
4. Total number of bids.
5. Where the winning bidder lives.
6. When the bid started.
7. Description of the item.
The book has several interesting anecdotes of the item's history, Lynn's family background, responses from winner bidders, and her vast knowledge of antiques and specialty items.
While such information was informative, I would have liked to have seen many more examples of her strategies and how she has been so successful on Ebay. Granted, the examples she did give were helpful (start the bid around $9.99, use the internet to research products, try to sell many lower priced items instead of a few high-priced items, etc.). However, I would have liked to have seen more strategies and examples that could be applied to whatever type of item you want to sell on Ebay. While Lynn seems to specialize on antiques and collectibles, there are several other categories of products on Ebay. Therefore, I would imagine that some strategies in selling antiques and collectibles may not necessarily work for other items.
Still though, a good and entertaining read. Recommended.
