2 comments about Salt & Pepper Shakers IV: Identification & Values (Salt & Pepper Shakers IV).

  1. 240 pages of nearly 1,000 large, sharp, clear, full color salt and pepper photographs. This is the 4th volume in the popular set, with prices updated for 1999. Not much text, but salt and pepper shaker collectors will be delighted with the pictures featured. Major topics range from Advertising, Animals, American Mades to Birds, Fish, Fowl and Condiment Sets to Holidays, Nodders, Places and Plastics. There is a very nice section on "Tomorrow's Collectibles." The book's best selling point is the quality of every photograph featured. Collectors who enjoy seeing beautiful photos of salt and peppers are sure to enjoy this volume.

  2. This little book is a great tool for quick reference. The pictures are great and all in colors. Short comments. If you need more detailed info: try Melva Davern's books, also great pictures but a little more history.

5 comments about The Collector's Encyclopedia of Pattern Glass.

  1. i am not new to collecting depression era glass, i was really into it in the early 80's, but its been a while and i thought a few good books might help me brush up... i shopped around, read the reviews and chose this as one of two that i ordered... WAS I DISAPPOINTED IN THIS ONE! all this book is, is a large compilation of drawings, NO DESCRIPTIONS, NO PATTERN NAMES, just drawings... even if, no ESPECIALLY if you know nothing about depression glass, this is definitely NOT the book for you! i was completely disappointed... sent it back immediately, trust me, try warman's or Gene Florence if you want to actually learn something about depression glass...

  2. I have found this book very helpful in identifying pattern glass. My copy is worn and soiled from being used so much. One of the best investments I have made in years...This book list hundreds of patterns shown in clear drawings. Great book for beginners.

  3. Mollie Helen McCain's Field Guide To Pattern Glass is a winner, covering all styles of pattern glass and pairing small black and white illustrations with clear descriptions. Those already familiar with pattern glass will find it a good solid reference.

  4. This is the best book ive found yet, and I have many books on pattern glass, If your going to buy just one book on pattern glass this is the one! great detail, very large variety of examples,

  5. "Pattern Glass" by Mollie Helen McCain is an excellent identification guide for early american pattern glass. The patterns are organized by characteristics and pictured clearly. I have had much success in finding the pattern name for glass. As a price guide it leaves a lot to be desired. Patterns are grouped in one of six catagories and priced according to catagory. As both a collector and dealer I find that many patterns are considerably under priced, and that rarity of individual items of a pattern are not considered.

3 comments about Whitman Juvenile Books: Reference & Value Guide.

  1. Delightful book (originally published in 1997) has been updated with '99 values. The 144 page book features more than 400 sharp, large, full color cover photographs of the Whitman Juvenile Books you may have enjoyed as a child. Sufficient background information is provided along with collectors information, grading your books, conventions, and more. You'll enjoy browsing and using this book. Very enjoyable !

  2. This book brought back many memories of my childhood. I went in search of Whitman books and probably have over 300 now. Eagerly anticipating a follow-up edition. Are there any other Whitman Collectors out there?

  3. A quality guide by David and Virginia Brown. In-depth descriptions and full-color photos make it easy to find the book of your choice and assess the value of it. Fascinating insight into the history of Whitman Publishing.

1 comments about Doorstops: Identification and Values.

  1. One must first be able to get past the problems that this is an old book with out of date values and poorly focused, washed-out photography. But its value lies in the fact that there are very few books on this subject and it has some pieces and color variations not found elsewhere.

4 comments about Pictorial Price Guide to American Antiques 2000-2001: 2000-2001 (Pictorial Price Guide to American Antiques and Objects Made for the American Market).

  1. This is a very nice book. The photography and descriptions of items shown is excellent, and the author has used actual auction prices. It is a good book to keep for future reference.

  2. Dorothy Hammond's series is of more use to serious antique collectors than other price guides because the items illustrated are identified as having been sold for the price given by auction or by dealer, the date of the sale, and the location of the sale. The information is timely and accurate. Items that I sold at auction in 2001 are illustrated here accurately. In other price guides, I've seen items that I can specifically identify as having been sold seven or eight years earlier listed with the old prices. In a rapidly changing market, that kind of misinformation can be costly.

  3. My husband & I have been collecting antiques for over 30 years. This book is wonderful because EVERY ITEM DESCRIBED IS PICTURED.
There is no guessing if this is your antique by the written desription, there is a picture to be certain.

  4. I was extremely disappointed with this book. Most of the items are photographed in back and white and in large groups, which makes it nearly impossible to identify items using these photos as references. I wouldn't recommend it for identification purposes.

1 comments about 2006 Scott Catalogue: Countries of the World J-O (Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue Vol 4 Countries J-O) (Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue Vol 4 Countries J-O).

  1. As standard catalogs go, the Scott series is fine for most people. There are still some questionable decisions on the numbering system, but that has always been true with Scott. And I still can't fully accept their decision to list "semi-postal" issues in a seperate section. Also, don't expect to find detailed listings of varieties. Anyone who is interested in a specific country (or topic) will already know to look for one of the specialised catalogs covering that area. A major improvement is the addition of color images throughout the series. This makes identification easier if the stamp is illustrated, but given the flood of issues over the past few decades, chances are that you'll still have to look to the design descriptions to track things down.

2 comments about Collectors Guide to Diecast Toys and Scale Models: Identification & Values (Collector's Guide to).

  1. I must say that I really regret buying this book. After waiting anxiously to receive it I was, upon opening it, almost immediately disappointed. It turned out to be an alphabetical listing of companies which produced die-cast models, with a brief (1 paragraph in some cases) description of company history. While it does list each model produced by the various companies and offer a valuation, it fails to describe the models in any detail. Therefore, a prospective collector has virtually no useful information to go on. It doesn't even tell you the various colours the models have been released in, or any details which might differenciate one model from another.

As for photos. This is another area where this book falls down. Very few graphics; once again - a real let down.

All in all, a very poor showing. Save your money and buy a different book!

  2. This book is not a complete listing of any single make of diecast car (although it does come close for a few makes) but rather a list of all diecast manufacturers that have ever existed with a representative sampling of prices and photos.

5 comments about Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls.

  1. The author (who is now deceased) wrote this book with the information she had collected. Since then, it has been further researched, new facts were collected, new pictures taken, and now Elaine Pardee's "Encyclopedia of Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls" is the result of this research. This book was wonderful when it was published, and I still love it.
    Mary

  2. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK ON NANCY ANN DOLLS. IT HAS A LOT OF PICTURES. THE ONLY THING IS THE PICTURES ARE IN BLACK AND WHITE. IT WOULD BE A LOT BETTER IF THE PICTURES WERE IN COLOR. IT WOULD BE EASIER TO FIND THE DOLL YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. WOULD BE GREAT IF SOMEONE WOULD WRITE AND UPDATE THIS BOOK ON NANCY ANNY STORYBOOK DOLLS WITH COLOR PICTURES. SEEMS A SHAME THAT THE TOY COMPANIES CAN'T BRING THESE DOLLS BACK FOR US TO BUY. THE LITTLE GIRLS MIGHT NOT LIKE THEM, BUT I AM SURE US ADULTS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME NEW NANCY ANN'S. I KNOW I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME MYSELF.

  3. Considering how long ago the dolls were produced this is a helpful book for those trying to identify their dolls. It is true that 95% of the pictures are in black & white which makes it much more difficult to recognize but it is better then no picture. Also there are several mistakes in the discriptions of some dolls and wrong accessories on some of the dolls. Lets just hope that a new and improved version (with color photos) will soon be available.

  4. I felt the book was incomplete, it only had two pages of color pictures and the description led me to believe it would have more of a complete listing and photos of the complete line.

  5. I agree with the reviewer who said this book was a disappointment. The editors should be smacked for including all of those horrid b&w photos. As someone who was looking for help identifying Nancy Ann dolls and could have really used this book, it was a great disappointment because of the photos.

  1. Antique Oak Furniture adequately presents fundamentals of turn-of-the-century oak pieces, but I found it not worthwhile for valuation purposes.
