  1. As a collector for over 40 years, this was the first book i bought my daughter on the subject. She loves the wonderful pictures of tthe thousands of coins she may not see elsewise. If it could be better these photos could be color on glossy paper, but then i guess it would cost $80 instead of $8!

  2. Should be titled "Price Guide to Canadian Coins". Nearly a quarter of the book is devoted to detailed descriptions of Canadian mintages. ..The disclaimer in the book is that no one could possibly cover all mintages in the space given, and that only coins the average collector is apt to encounter were included. ... A number of countries are not included at all, and the ones that were get cursory treatment in comparison...

2 comments about Collectable Paperback Books : 10,000 Prices Realized.

  1. Ok, they did their research here, yes, but if you are hoping to get a genralized idea on all paperback books, don't bother with this book. It's almost entirely of old paperbacks. One get's a sort '50-'60's feeling going on.... and it does not start by author, but by publisher, which is incomplete. Not all books that should be listed here, are. There are gaps everywhere. The pricing seems close, but still "off", and for the amount of money you need to put down for this book, I think there should be more pictures, ilustrations etc.., more variety period. This is a book from someones favorite time era, and even that, as mentioned before, is lacking, and has a LOT of gaps. The list of psuedonyms was helpful, a source that could not easily be found elsewhere compiled all nice and neat. Thumbs up for that. There are a LOT of collectible paperbacks out there, under many many subjects. Sadly, they just aren't in this particular guide. What I was willing to pay for , and what I was I was hoping to find..... was no where to be found. At the time of purchase, there were no reviews avaible, so I really hope this will help someone else find exactly what they are, or are not looking for, for themselves.

  2. When this book first arrived in the mail, I was upset to have paid 30 dollars for such a small book. But I've found it immensely useful.

    The print is very small, and my guess is that the volume has as much content as larger format books. The arrangement is a little different: books are listed, first by publisher, then by publisher's item number. NOTE: date of publication is NOT given! So each entry is arranged thus:

    PUBLISHER -PUB.# -TITLE -AUTHOR -CONDITION -PRICE

    Additional, and valuable, info includes "Type" for special items such as Digests or Movie Tie-Ins, and whether the price was obtained by Auction as opposed to sale. There are some black&white illustrations of book covers, and a very useful chart of authors' pseudonyms. The explanatory introduction is very good.

    The listings are not complete. For example, the Avon Books listings are for Avon books numbered 1,3,4,6,10,11,15, and so on. Such numbering gaps are typical, since the listings are "prices realized," i.e. real sales.

    It's a little book, but a wealth of research went into it. I highly recommend it.

1 comments about Coins (The Collector's Corner).

  1. Never has more information and colorful pictures been packed in such a small book. It was this book that encouraged me to start collection porcelain notgeld. The Contents list does not do justice to all the helpful information given in this book.
    * The Early Coins
    * Making Coins
    * What is in a Coin
    * Proof and Commemorative Coins and Tokens
    * Portraits and Pictorialism Marks and Symbols
    * Date, Legends and Inscriptions
    * The Coin Collector's Guide

    Just one chapter alone (What is in a Coin) it covers
    * Gold
    * Silver
    * Copper
    * Platinum
    * Nickel
    * Iron
    * Zinc
    * Tin
    * Lead
    * Aluminum
    * Alloys
    * Non-metallic (pasteboard, porcelain, stoneware, plastic, wood, etc.)
    * Shape (Square, Triangular, Many-sided, Wavy-sided)

    And the list goes on.
    This is defiantly a good starting place and would make a good present.

1 comments about Collecting Poole Pottery.

  1. On the whole Collecting Poole Pottery by Robert Prescott-Walker is a useful but flawed book. The written history gives a good "in a nut shell" account of the Poole company from the 1850's to the 1980's, while a section in the back titled 'Recent Trends and Developments' gives a little information on Poole in the nineties. It could however have included a bit more information on the Delphis range (OK that's my favourite) and have been a bit more systematic in its approach.

    My main complaint lies with the photographs and how they are arranged and labelled. The order is roughly chronological but somewhat haphazard. On page 90 for instance we go from plates and pots of the 70's and 90's to seven pages of tiles in chronological order, to some pots and animals of the 20's through to 50's, and then on to some70's Delphis...why?. Would it not be better to just have a section on tiles, a section on 50's pottery, a section on Delphis and so on. Each section could have a series of well-labelled shots of typical Poole pottery of that era or range, including size\s and shape numbers.

    I would have also liked a more comprehensive list of marks and at least some list of painters\ paintresses and their marks, particularly of the Delphis range. Delphis and Aegean have become highly collectable and in my humble opinion could have had a section to themselves.

    These small criticisms aside Collecting Poole Pottery is a useful and informative book for those interested in this beautiful pottery. You certainly won't find better value for money on the subject. If only someone would bring out a book purely on the Delphis range I'd be happy.

4 comments about The Official 2000 Blackbook Price Guide to World Coins: 3rd Edition (Official Blackbook Price Guide to World Coins, 3rd ed).

  1. This book is just way too broad to be of much help to a serious collector. However, if you need a cheap, VERY quick overview of world coins, this book is OK.

    Unfortunately, there are a good number of countries that do not have coins listed. I don't have a huge amount of world coins, but I was able to find only a little over half of my coins in this book.

    With so many different countries' coins listed, this book can't contain very many grades of each coin.

    If there is a particular foreign country that you are interested in collecting its coins, you'll want to go elsewhere for a more specific reference. This is not the book for specifics.

    However, there are a few handy essays at the beginning of the book on how to buy coins, spot a bad deal, and so on. There's also some references to on-line help.

    This book isn't terrible; it will give you a nice intro into a particular country's coins (if it covers that country), but for me, it's not very valuable.

  2. A very good reference for the collector of world coins who knows where the coins are from, bu t a poor reference for coins in which the country is unknown to you. Also very limited in the number of countries that it covers.

  3. Made the mistake from "One World" to "World Coins" and really don't regret it. The old family drawers have some foreign coins. Now I have a reference,

  4. A VERY COMPREHENSIVE,AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND,COIN BOOK FOR THE NOVICE,LIKE ME,TO THE SEASONED COIN COLLECTOR,WITH A LOT MORE THEN JUST PRICES.INFACT I CAN GRADE SOME OF MY COINS NOW,A VERY GOOD BOOK.
