4 comments about World War II Homefront Collectibles: Price & Identification Guide.

  1. Jacobs must be given credit for producing the very first priceguide on homefront collecting. And Jacobs has assembled photographs of some fairly uncommon items from his pool of experienced contributors. But thats where the kudos end. It is mostly all B&W with just a few color. The organization makes it almost impossible to identify an item that does not have a picture. He lists two different prices for the same item on different pages. His coverage of the homefront area is poor. He wastes several pages on listing gum cards while completely failing in the areas like anti-axis where covers, cinderellas and postcards are just about all that is listed missing ceramics, toys etc in that subcategory. He has a slug of jewelry photos that someone obviously spent a great deal of time shooting but they are all in B&W completely subduing that contribution. And his prices are plain and simply not credible especially when compared to his V For Victory book which has many of the same items but radically different prices without explanation. Overall I'd say buy it just for the pics but throw out the price guide part. Its a woefully error ridden text. An obvious rush job. I give it two stars for being the first.

  2. World War II Homefront Collectibles: Price & Identification Guide presents more than 2,000 items known in antique collector circles as "homefront collectibles" originally produced in the United States to bolster civilian moral during the years of World War II. Profusely illustrated with 600 photos (including a section of full-color photography), World War II Homefront Collectibles is a unique, invaluable aid and guide for both beginner and experienced collectors and dealers. From jewelry, postcards, movie posters, and matchbooks, to toys, games, trading cards, and anti-Axis memorabilia, this definitive, authoritative, reliable, highly recommended guide is an essential addition to any personal, professional, or community library antiques/collectibles reference book collection. Send for the free Krause Publications catalog for a complete listing of fine antique/collectible price guide titles.

  3. Tom Brokav said it all in his best selling novel, The Greatest Generation: "The World War II Victory era from 1941-1945 will undoubtably be forever known as the 'Greatest Generation' in America history! My book is a visual journey into the most humerous, often outlandish, and fascinating World War II collectibles ever assembled.206 pages.Over 2000 listings, 600 wonderful detailed photos, chapter biographies, with a price and identification guide for each collectible. Chapters include: V for Victory, Remember Pearl Harbor, Patriotics, Civilian Defense, Anti-Axis, and Wartime Kids. Homefront hobbyists as well as collectors of Americana will treasure this book.

  4. Great, new 208 page volume with over 600 black and white and more than 60 full color photos. Covers homefront items ranging from: arcade pin-up postcards, greeting cards, matchbooks and POW, to stationery, comics, gum cards and toys. Numerous paper items are shown. Each major chapter includes an interesting and informative introduction to the topic. Values are provided. An outstanding compilation of a variety of collectibles, providing insight into life in the U.S. during WWII that will be of interest to people of all ages.

2 comments about Law Enforcement Memorabilia: Price and Identification Guide.

  1. This book was not what I expected. It would be good for a new collector, but not an established one. It leaves a lot to be desired, especially photos of badges.

  2. First comprehensive price guide for this popular collectible. 192 pages of great pictures and information about badges, patches, vehicles, license plates, billy clubs and nightsticks, uniforms, restraints, call boxes and much more, even toys! Features 550 large, sharp, black and white photos, and 65 large, full color photos. Provides a brief history of badges and enforcement collectibles. A comprehensive listing of over 1,000 Hallmarks is included, with the maker's mark, location, years, city and state. Very interesting and useful book.

5 comments about Modern Candy Containers & Novelties: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. I have seen the price double in candy containers and this is going to be a HOT new collectable. And so far this is the best book I have found and I have really looked.

    Candy King.

  2. I think this is a great book and do recommend it.

  3. This book is great and a MUST HAVE for serious and casual or would be collectors of Candy Containers. I have been collecting glass Candy Containers for many years and have just begun collecting the plastic containers. This is the BEST book on the subject. It is well organized and provides just enough background on the history of candy containers. It must have taken thousands of hours to compile such an extensive list and take all those pictures... Such great detail! The price evaluations are surprisingly accurate. Even though there is a disclaimer that value is what it is worth to you and the hobby is ment for fun. What a book. I bought 6 of 'em for gifts.

  4. I'm so happy a book finally came out on this, not so old, collecting of plastic candy containers. I can now see so many that I do not have, that will make the "hunting" so much more exciting. The book title says it all, "Modern Candy Containers & novelties", because there are few older ones listed. All in all, I think this is a great book and do recommend it to any one that enjoys collecting fun "stuff"!

  1. If you have an attic of old items or a penchant for garage sales and 'junk', you may be surprised to find with that only a few simple tools you can turn inexpensive 'found objects' into treasures for a personal collection or resale. This is for the part-time antique collector and provides tips on everything from evaluating furniture, metal, and other common items to gluing, coloring, and refinishing antiques. An excellent guide any part-time hobbyist or collection catering to them needs.

3 comments about Kovels' Bottles Price List 12th Edition (Kovel's Bottles Price List).

  1. This was one of the first bottle books I got to start categorizing my extensive collection. I am far from being a novice, however, my end-goal was to price some of my rarer bottles, and this book did that pretty well. What I found disappointing was the total LACK of photos (hardly any), and large gaping holes in sections such as "cures", "medicines", and "bitters". Hardly any of us will ever see a $4000 bottle in our lifetime other than online - but Kovels' persists in only showing photographs of the rarest of bottles. Not to mention, many of their prices are extremely inflated estimates obviously made by someone of Sotheby's blood, not us plain ol' diggers. To be honest, this book helped ID about 20% of my bottles in my bottle collection - so I found it useful, and since it was a gift, even more so - I doubt if I'd buy it myself. More pictures, better categorization, and breaking the book into smaller books with more detailed pictures is what I would do. This book could easily be broken into 10 better books with some effort. Novice bottle collectors would be better off trying Antique Glass and Bottle Collectors magazine if you want better information and pictures.

  2. It had a lot of good information, but hardly ANY pictures to help identify the bottles. The good pictures were of bottles most of us will never see or find. What about the bottles we find at auctions, garage sales etc. Lots of us are NOVICE collectors, and we need more pictures to help us identify what we have. As far as I'm concerned, I've wasted my money. It isn't much help to this new novice. If your a professional bottle collector, this is the book for you.

  3. Organized by bottle type (medicine, beer, etc.), this comprehensive book quickly enables the reader to track down a wide variety of bottles from by-gone days. The authors have wisely included descriptions of various bottle types and their intended uses. This will help novice bottle collectors to better research their bottles as the purpose of many bottled products no longer holds any signficance to modern folks (this is especially true for medicines and elixirs that existed before the dawn of the Food & Drug Administration). Readers would be better served if more pictures could be found as well as timelines regarding a bottler's production dates. But the omission of these items is understandable regarding the overall convenience and ease of using this book.
