1. The title is "The Basic Book of Antiques" you could say "by George"
   The book describes its self as "A definitive textbook for the beginning collector, covering the entire field of antiques and collectibles and all phases of antiquing for pleasure and investment" well that is a tall order but George Michael gives it a good try.
   The table of contents gives the best description of the range covered:
   1. How to collect and Enjoy Antiques
   2. Furniture
   3. Glass
   4. Ceramics
   5. Silver and Pewter
   6. Brass, Bronze, Copper, Iron, and Tin
   7. Folk Art and Wall Decorations
   8. Clocks, Cloths, Paper, and Miscellaneous Collectibles
   All pictures are black and white.

1. An extremely detailed guide to the latest knives. Thousands of photos are scattered throught the book. The book is devided into several sections, including one with articles on general knive topics, listings of all of the best knives of specific class, and company by company guide. Any knive enthuisiast's
   dream.

3 comments about Baby-Boomer Dolls: Plastic Playthings of the 1950's and 1960's a Reference and Price Guide.

1. To try to fit all the Baby Boomer dolls in one book would be impossible. This book gives a good overview about dolls from this time. Good pictures, lots of company info. In its second printing so that should say something right there. My favorites were the TV related dolls like Jeannie and Pebbles and Bamm Bamm.



2. This was strong on Terri Lee dolls (9 pages) and on Mattel (13 pages). Though 16 pages were devoted to Madame Alexander, I felt that just two small pictures of "Cissy" were not enough; and there were no pictures of the Winnie or Binnie Walker dolls. Most of the MA coverage was of the child-dolls and Alexanderkins.
   There were only two pages devoted to "Ginny"--and there were no pictures of Ginny with painted eyes, molded lashes, or bent knees. All were of the painted-lash version.
   Karl offers less than 1 column (about 100 words!) on the prolific and highly collectible Virga dolls, offering no pictures at all.
   The quality of the pictures is excellent, and this is a nicely produced book. But I feel that it does not offer full enough coverage, especially of the hard plastic dolls of the 1950s, to be considered a comprehensive guide.



3. If you collect dolls of the 50s and 60s you should buy this book. It has hundreds of full color photos with descriptions and prices. It's a great reference guide. I enjoyed looking at so many of the dolls I grew up with.

1. this book has it all. It has very concise lists of baseball cards. My husband uses it every day when cataloging his cards. It was worth the price.



2. the 2005 edition of Beckett Almanac Of Baseball Cards And Collectibles, which even includes Canadian cards from 1912 to modern times - and coins, pins, stickers, team yearbooks and more. There are thousands of photos which lend to easy identification even in black and white, there are card grading tips and guides for beginners, and each section is introduced with a specific set of notes or collector's tips. Conclude with a glossary of hobby terms and series indexes and you have a top pick which represents a virtual 'bible' - and a must for any serious baseball card collector.



3. An absolute must for the advanced collector.

   This comprehensive volume combined with Krause's Annual Standard Catalog Of Baseball Cards, are the two most important tools for anyone serious about baseball card collecting.

   My only gripe is Beckett simultaneously publishing their inferior 'Baseball Annual' at the same time. It's clearly inferior to their Almanac and borders on customer abuse offering a "lite" version for the ignorant just to make more money.

   Still, that problem issue aside, the Almanac is a must-have if you're going take your collection to the next level.




4. If you collect baseball cards you absolutely must have this book. It catalogs virtually every baseball card ever made, including variations and errors.

   Why only four stars and not five? Subtle reasons, mostly. The main reason is that this book, despite being released recently, does not do a very good job of covering the professionally graded baseball card market. This is even more surprising as Beckett does have a grading service of their own. As such, the sections covering the history of baseball cards and how to grade cards is lacking and is pretty much a reprint of what's been appearing in Beckett books like this one for over fifteen years. They really could have done a better job of modernizing those sections.

   However, as a reference book to help identity cards and give approximate values, this book cannot be beat. Buy it now!




5. This almanac continues to expand -- and become better. Each year, it has added more sets, more details and more areas of collectibles. It is about to ``outgrow'' its covers. But that will be a long-range bonus for collectors. Beckett and able company will be forced to split the book, probably taking out minor league cards. The editors have become particularly adept at adding team-issued sets. A complete checklist of McCarthy baseball cards -- rumored for No. 6 -- would be a great addition. The only improvement I would like to see would be for more details on some sets and certain variations in a set (how to tell them apart). If you are a serious collector of baseball items, this is one of the few MUST books for your book shelf. And it's getting better and better with each edition.

1. When you are collecting stamps you need the best reference catalog available, and this is the one, almost every store and auction uses it not only as a price reference but also as a clasification guide. My only concern is why this volume is cheaper than the other five.

1. If you have an interest in watches and clocks this is the reference book for you! There are over 3,000 alphabetical listings of horological terms, many with detailed drawings. Also included are several appendices (33) that provide easy to find and use information. Add this excellent publication to your collection today!

1. It's got a LOT of books, it's very inclusive, the colour pictures are a great help. BUT, it doesn't mention the British publishers of some books, which were actually published in Britain, before the (listed) US first edition. So, it's flawed, but still worth the (very reasonable) price. I intend to buy the 1850-1950 book.



2. Diane McClure Jones and Rosemary Jones tackle a weighty task in Collector's Guide To Children's Books 1950-75 V. 3 which surveys children's selected books from picturebooks to young adult. Pricing may not be exact but the inclusion of many rare items will give collectors a good starting point for identification and valuation.

1. This is the most useful guide to collectable china that I have found. It is not only an exhaustive reference guide to Homer Laughlin's "Virginia Rose", but provides much information about other types of china as well. This book provides details and information that you can't find elsewhere.

1. A terrific book on antique china, silver and glass that was well-written and beautifully photographed. I felt like I was part of the periods discussed.

4. I thought Risa Palazzo's writing was beautiful in this book. I gained a real understanding of the eras covered, especially for the way that women lived and entertained during the 1920s and 1930s. A very worthwhile book for anyone interested in table accessories.



5. I thought that this book was beautifully written by Risa Palazzo. While giving much valuable historical perspective, the spirit of the periods covered was wonderfully captured with great feeling.
