2 comments about Glass A to Z.

  1. "Glass A to Z" is an excellent encyclopedia of information about glass, manufacturing processes, and manufacturers. It's alphabetical listing of topics makes it very to easy use to locate information quickly. Topics are cross-referenced as well. Topic headings are in bold print and paragraphs about the topics range in length. A handy section at the back of the text includes a section with manufacturer's marks as well. Whether you are a novice collector or a glassware buff, this is a great book to have in your library. Although the book was published in 2002, the information is timeless. Mine is well-worn from extensive use.

  2. If you want a basic, comprehensive reference manual on art glass, this is the book for you. It contains an exhaustive, alphabetic listing of every popular art glass term, technique, and manufacturer. Each listing contains detail limited to a single sentence to several paragraphs, according to the depth of the topic. Like most encyclopedias, it won't make you an expert on any one topic, but it will give you most of the basic information you will likely ever need if you want to collect or deal in art glass. Not many photos, but a lot of information.

5 comments about Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins.

  1. 5 STARS -- If you are familiar with Chester L. Krause publications Standard Catalogue Of World Coins Series, those books share its style and contents with the Encyclopedia of World Gold Coins, the same format and and easy to use information on every minted gold, platinum, and palladium coin. coins, actual size photos are in B&W but is missing complete important sections like whole countries as in Netherlands, and segments as in Australian Sovereigns, 1500's???. You can find missing information within the 4 now 5 volumes of Standard Catalog Of World Coins 1600-2005.
This volume is easy to use contains a wealth of information and excellent organization seldom found in other books.
***** 5 STARS for content and easy of use.
it has some shortcomings but is an invaluable resource.

See the following for further Numismatic information:

Coins of England and the United Kingdom
2008 Guide Book of Us Coins Redbook (Guide Book of United States Coins) (Guide Book of United States Coins)
Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795 - 1933, Circulating, Proof, Commemorative, and Pattern Issues
How the experts buy and sell gold bullion, gold stocks, & gold coins
Us Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide (Official Whitman Guidebook)

  2. Probably the only reference book for modern golden coins. Useful to discover what coins have a numismatic value and not only a value related to gold content.

  3. A must have book for every student and collector of world gold coins from the 1600's on. I agree that for research prior to the 1600's one needs Friedbergs "Gold Coins of the World" . As a professional coin dealer I recommend both of these books to customers who are interested in learing about and collecting world gold coins.

  4. GREAT BOOK, HOWEVER, COMPLETELY FORGOT TO MENTION ANY COINS FROM THE NETHERLANDS, IE: KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS-1815-DATE.

  5. A complete guide, perfect for basic information about any specific coin around the world.

3 comments about Victorian & Edwardian Fashions for Women, 1840-1919.

  1. I enjoy all of Kristina Haris' books on fashion, and I am so thankful that she has taken the time to show everyone actual pieces of fashion history. One poster remarked that it was hypocritical of Kristine to photograph women in these delicate vintage clothes that need to be preserved -- as a museum director, I understand that remark, yet I believe that sometimes it is good to show how the clothes would have actually looked on a real person, especially with accessories. I am just delighted Kristine shares pictures of these outfits with us, because good color photos of authentic historical dress are very hard to come by.

  2. When I first began collecting antique clothing, I picked this book up. It has some beautiful pieces pictured, and seems to be competently written. I know that not all antique clothing is worth collecting and preserving. But it seemed that it was the intent of the writer to encourage people to care for antique clothing properly in her writing. However, the photos of modern women being skinned into fragile pieces of history, playing dress-up for a photographer is a bit hypocritical. I can not take this book seriously, and it makes me cringe when I try to flip through to reference the styles. It doesn't often come off of my bookshelf, and it's almost been donated to the book exchange a couple of times.

  3. This book is a perfect companion to Alison Gernsheim's compilation of vintage B&W fashion photographs (for Dover). Schiffer, best known for its books aimed at antiques collectors, presents this survey by Kristina Harris (who herself models some of the outfits) of women's fashion decade-by-decade from 1840 to the edge of the Jazz Age. Most of the outfits presented here are reproductions, but perfect ones; as Harris explains, real vintage clothes dating back to the Victorian and Edwardian periods are often too fragile to wear and are better suited for display purposes. The photography is mostly full-color, of modern models wearing the clothes (mixed with an ample number of vintage photographs and illustrations) and excellent. The text is smoothly written and highly detailed, going over every detail of Victorian costume from hats to underwear. Put this in your vintage-fashion library!

3 comments about The Ultimate Doll Book.

  1. I would consider this book a coffee table book. Why??...Because the photos are like the larger photos used in basic coffee table books. Nothing wrong with that, but this book just skims over the various doll categories. Thus, it is a basic doll book with lovely photos, & great for beginner doll collectors.

  2. Doll collectors and fans will find Caroline Goodfellow's Ultimate Doll Book to be a fine, colorful guide showcasing more than 400 dolls ranging from 18th century simple peg woodens, to 19th century French fashion dolls, down through today's Barbie & Ken. Chapters are packed with color images and even more important, provide portraits of the dolls clothed and unclothed along with identification tips based on structural details. From rag dolls to baby dolls and national dolls, this is packed with insights.

  3. And she says:

This is a good visual reference book, especially if you are a collector of dolls 100 years old (and older). The beautiful wood dolls on page 10 are from the late 1600's - I think a museum would have something like that, but not me. The book is divided into 11 chapters, based on the material the doll is made of, or unusual subject matter such as who they depict. The funniest page is called Patriotic Character Dolls, with all the photos depicting Political Figures (men) from 1890-1918.

The text is somewhat sparse, but the photos are stunning. It seems that every page has color photos on it, making this a good buy for an "art book". As an amateur collector, I do not feel that the information in the book is adequate for me to identify a valuable antique from a reproduction.

There are interesting suggestions for restoration, so this book would be a good addition to a museum curator's reference library if your museum has old dolls to display.

This book is for adults, and its reading level is too advanced for children under 12.

5 comments about The Complete Guide to Vintage Children's Records: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. Mr. Muldavin's book is a very attractive, entertaining and informative work. It is a pleasure to browse, with colorful 50's style illustrations as well as a generous sprinkling of color photographs of some of the records themselves and their vintage art jackets. The pages are of a slick, sturdy weight paper which will hold up well under a lot of thumbing through by the reader. It begins with a very interesting introduction which includes an explanation of codes and abbreviations used within, the purpose of the book, various types of children's records, what "vintage" means, information on children's record labels, a most interesting history of the "Golden Age" of children's records, and much, much more. The meat of the work is a well-organized discography of thousands of 78 rpm children's records from the 1940-50's with their disc ID numbers, song titles, artists, year, and estimated value. This book covers in an eye-catching way everything you didn't know you wanted to know about vintage children's records.

  2. One of the fondest memories I have from my youth is that old, suitcase style record player where I would play records for hours. I used to have a lot of old kids records and would dearly LOVE to still have them. My favorite was an Batman LP from the 60's that came a comic that retold Batman's origin. Collector Books is always ahead of the pack when it comes to publishing great niche books, and they've released truly the ultimate book for fans and collectors of children's records.

The Complete Guide to Vintage Children's Records is a remarkable book and a journey through a wonderful era of nostalgia. The Author, Peter Muldavin is a lifelong collector of children's nostalgia items and this book came about out of pure necessity. There simply was nothing else out there on the market. Now, the focus of the book is on 78 rpm records and not 45's or LP's. It's important to point that out as what most people are going to encounter in garage sale or flea markets is going to be LP's or 45's. Muldavin is concentrating on the era of his childhood, the early baby boomer years when 78's were prevalent in the 40's and through the late 50's.

Muldavin provides a very detailed and entertaining history of childrends records which highlights the Golden Age of kids records from 1946 - 1956. This includes a top ten list of record companies who produced children's records which includes Golden, Victor/RCA, Decca, Capitol, and Mercury. He also covers unique packages such as shaped or die-cut records, picture discs, filmstrip records, etc...All highly collectible today! There's also very valuable information about identifying and dating records, grading, and buying and selling. This truly is one-stop shopping for the Kid's record collectors.

Perhaps the most important section of the book is the 80 pages dedicated to label notes and identification. Here, Muldavin lists the hundreds of different label producers along with information such as distributor, content, subsidiaries, record size, color of label, date range, and miscellaneous notes. For example, Blue Ribbon records was a division of Mercury Records producing general children's entertainment records in the 1950's on 6", 7", or 10" vinyl. Over 450 different labels are noted.

The guide portion makes up the 300 pages plus of the book. It lists records alphabetically by label brand, beginning with Action Records and ending with Young People's Records. The guide is done in a grid format listing the main title, Disc #, artist, year, and values for both G/VG and EX/NMT grades. In all over 13,000 records are listed in the guide with hundreds of clear color photos included. In here you'll see pictures of records such as The Travels of Babar, Astro Boy, Mighty Mouse in Toyland, Jerry Lewis the Noisy Eater, and Uncle Milty and Donald Duck...what gems!

One of the best books I've seen yet from Collector Books...gorgeously illustrated and thorough. The perfect Baby Boomer companion!

  3. Peter Muldavin's COMPLETE GUIDE TO VINTAGE CHILDREN'S RECORDS provides a catalog of values paired with color photos for almost 13,000 records on over 450 labels. Many entries are unique to this reference, which offers a nearly complete listing of vintage children's records, primarily in the 78 RPM and early 45 RPM formats. The comprehensive coverage for nearly all 78 RPMs in the USA can't be beat.

  4. Let me say at the outset that I'm not really -- yet -- a children's record collector, but I am a fan of the wonderful and imaginative art that graces so many of the covers. And the older I get, the more the songs, stories, and fables themselves touch my heart in ways that complex adult materials can't. I discovered this guide by accident while trying to find a particular song from my childhood. In the tradition of Schroeder Publishing's Collector Books, it is a very impressive work. Collectors will find not only values for a vast number of records, but also insightful information on the various labels. Hundreds of jackets and records are illustrated in color. It's fun just to flip through. The love and enthusiasm that Mr. Muldavin clearly feels for his hobby are infectious and he shares his expertise fully. Highly recommended!

  5. Now readers of all ages can see for themselves what Internet-savy record collectors have known for years--that there is nobody else with author Peter Muldavin's depth of knowledge on the subject of childrens' records from the prime years of vintage vinyl.

My husband is an avid vintage vinyl collector. From the moment I first heard about this book, I knew we needed to buy it. And we were not disappointed. When the book finally arrived, we were flabbergasted by its quality. THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO VINTAGE CHILDREN'S RECORDS is a gorgeous book from it's cover art to the meticulously designed, full-color inner pages. The publisher obviously spared no expense. The result is a book everyone (not just record collectors) can enjoy, a book so sumptously packaged it can take its place among your favorites on the coffee table. A comprehensive research tome disguised as a handy collector's catalog, it is jam-packed with valuable information delivered factually but with an irresistable touch of whimsey. One wonders if this is due to the delightful nature of the subject matter or due to some special characteristic of its author, who is aptly dubbed the Kiddie Rekord King.

Buy this book and leave it on your coffee table for your friends and family members to enjoy!

4 comments about Professional Wrestling Collectibles.

  1. Overall, a very well researched book by Mr. Pope and Mr. Whebbe. This book does not cover all wrestling collectibles, that would be impossible, however, it does give the collector a good idea of the many areas in wrestling that are out there to collect, although they do have a very in-depth coverage of the action figures and autographs.

The book also covers some of the history of wrestling and is a great book for novices and long-time collectors. There are great photos of some of the older collectibles that I have only heard about. My favorite chapters were the ones on the action figures, trading cards and autographs, which make up a large part of my 15+ year collection.

The prices listed are average, however, the value of the items in this market change so rapidly, that its hard to give a set value on some items. 5 stars to Mr. Pope and Mr. Whebbe for tackling such a huge task.

  2. Pro Wrestling Collectibles is certainly what this book is all about. Its all the other stuff covered that makes this book so interesting. My favorite chapter is number two (2) "Some Superstars Worth Collecting". The history about many of these wrestlers can be found no where else. The authors did a great job in organizing this "collectible" and putting every thing into perspective. Recommended reading for all wrestling fans!

  3. The book provided terrific reference material and continually captured my attention from page to page. The pictures added tremendous detail. The author clearly did his homework.

  4. This is a good book filled with lots of pictures and information. It is a good book for anyone but for the hardcore collector it does not cut it. Aloso the prices are a bit off on certain items. Overall the pictures make it a worthy purchase. Reccommended!
