2 comments about The Minidisc.
- Gives good mid-level technical coverage of the MiniDisc system, but unfortunately provides neither the general story of MD's development and marketing, nor the important technical details of the system. Some parts are not completely accurate (such as the description of the MiniDisc UTOC layout).
A reasonable purchase for someone trying to collect all the publicly available information about MiniDisc. Note that the definitive MiniDisc work -- Sony's "Rainbow Book" specification describing the entire system in detail -- is available only to MiniDisc licensees.
- Not for the technically illiterate, Jan Maes' "The MiniDisc" is based on a series of training sessions developed for Sony personnel in Europe. The book attempts to explain the technology behind MiniDisc from it's similarities to other optical formats (CD, CD-ROM, CD-MO) to it's distinctions (ATRAC compression, disc size, etc). Persons interested in what makes a MiniDisc system tick will get a lot out of this book. A glossary would have been helpful for those of us without degrees in audio engineering. Probably the only book of it's kind. Overall impression: favorable.

1 comments about Project Studio Blueprint.
- A friend of mine who's an A/V guy recommended this book...it was a solid recommendation. There's so much info and opinions about homestudios and recording, it is VERY easy for a beginner to get WAY OVERWHELMED!!! This book gives accurate, unbiased information about the issues you'll face in building a studio. The author gives an examples of his own personal studio and offers a "high end" and "low end" solution. I thought there could have been more details given about the trade-offs or noticable impact (e.g. to soundproof or not to soundproof); however, his direction on construction, equipment, costs, etc. will give you a solid foundation with which to attack the mountain of internet info and biased vendor statements! Hard to find...but worth it!

2 comments about Edison Blue Amberol Recordings 1912-1914.
- If Jan in Norway is reading this, tell them to read our review and try again to get your money back; this was NOT YOUR MISTAKE!!! We had the same exact experience as you did. We ordered "The Edison Disc Phonographs and the Diamond Discs, Second Edition by Ronald Dethlefson" and received this book on the Blue Emberol recordings instead. It seems obvious since this identical error happened to two Amazon customers that the problem was with their listing; we were able to convince customer service to refund us the complete purchase price plus shipping, however. Note: "The Edison Disc Phonographs and the Diamond Discs, Second Edition by Ronald Dethlefson" seems to have disappeared off the Amazon website now.
- I ordered "The Edison Disc Phonograph and Diamond Discs, Second edition by R. Dethlefson" which was listed here, but when the shipment arrived after about 6 weeks, it turned out to be the "Edison Blue Amberol Recordings 1912-1914" which I had no use for. After complaining, a new ordere was placed by AMAZON which arrived after another 7 weeks, and the same wrong book appeared. Amazon was deeply sorry, they couldn't deliver and returned my money.
The funny thing is that, after realizing the extent of the problem, Amazon have changed the title of this entry to "Edison Blue Amberol Recordings 1912-1914" which by experience is what people get when ordering here! But, look... the EDITORIAL REVIEW isn't changed, so it is irrelevant to the title offered .......
So, for those interested in the Blue Amberoles, this book describes in detail what is known about the recordings with regard to titles, recording particulars etc. Possibly interesting information to those specializing in this particular field.
And, by the way, the author of the "The Edison Disc Phonograph and Diamond Discs" is George L Frow c.2001. This book is very recommendable, but not available at AMAZON.

5 comments about 20th Century Rock and Roll: Psychedelia (20th Century Rock and Roll).
- As an introductory book to psychedelic music this is a less than satisfactory book and it is definitely not the tome it pretends to be. The book focuses on fifty of the most important psychedelic groups, has some colour reprints of some classic albums and includes a list of the best psychedelic albums and singles. However, it is written in a very poor way, its overall presentation is shoddy and, very often, merely states the obvious without adding anything new. The writer's tendency to refer to his own record collection is, to say the least, annoying. For a really in depth analysis of psychedelia, I would recommend THE ACID TRIP (V.Joynson), FUZZ ACID & FLOWERS (V.Joynson) or even UNKNOWN LEGENDS OF ROCK AND ROLL (R.Unterberger).
- This is an informative and fun read for any fan of the music from the Psychedelic Sixties. The book opens with a history of psychedelics and the roots of the music and what it was like to be alive in the late Sixties. Belmo then gives a history of the top 50 groups of the era and includes lots of little known facts and a helpful discography for each group. Very cool. There are 12 pages of color photos of the psychedelic album art work. At the end of the book are lists for the top 100 albums, top 200 songs and the most collectable psychedelic albums. Thanks to this book I have now begun my search in earnest for some of the far out albums Belmo writes about. A must have book!
- I already have all of Bemo's other books and I think they're all great. My fave is THE BEATLES-NOT FOR SALE. Very detailed. PSYCHEDELIA is a great look at an era/genre of music created when the world was changing and one of the main reasons for this change was the music.
- This book has set a new standard for those who lived in the age of psychedelia. It is well written and full of facts which few people are aware. It's obvious that Belmo has spent a great deal of time researching the subject and talking to those who actually made that era what it has become - an original American cultural experience which continues to have a global impact. Without a doubt, this one goes in the reference library.
- An enjoyable and informative primer on the fascinating world of psychedelic music. Whether you're a newcomer looking to get started or an old timer strolling down memory lane, you'll find this book has much to offer. If you like psychedelic music, you should have this book on your bookshelf. Highly recommended!
