This book is a good Hamster Care Guide,but I suguest getting a picture Hamster Care guide instead of this.Why?This book has paragraphs and more paragraphs,not a lot of pictures or small details.So much reading!!Ah!!!If you hate to read so much,get another Hamster Care guide.Cause this one has....a lot of words.Other than that,the information are great!

So many of the books for pets have the same ole info in them and in fact some are just republished and only have a few updates of new info in them..Not this Book..its New..and I love it..it has a great layout of info so you dont have to read the whole book to find just what your looking for.the pages are nicely layed out and the paper is excellent.I love the pictures too.Im an adult and this is my first rabbit and IVe been disappointed in what info in books are out there..this is a great place to start..its Excellent.B.W.

1. The purpose is to provide lab professionals with the advice on the maintenance of rabbits and rodents, concerning their care and health. It covers rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, mouse and rat. Even though it is intended for *experts*, the book is relatively easy to read and is very thorough starting with the general husbandry and biology, followed by clinical procedures, sign of disease, diagnoses and listing specific diseases and conditions from A-Z. It lists the hosts for the disease, etiology, transmission, predisposing factors, clinical signs, necropsy signs, diagnosis, prevention, effect on research and public health significance. The last chapter has self test with case reports.

   Even though this is not an *exotic pet rodent* book, it is a great reference book for any rabbit or rodent pet owner, since most diseases occur in pets as well as in laboratory animals. A nice middle ground between serious technical veterinary books and the common photo pet shop books.

1. This book is full of information but unfortunately gives some very poor advice for any rat owner. Pine and cedar will both cause respiratory problems in rats, which can lead to ill health and secondary infections. Also, many of the pictures in this book are of mice.
   
   If you buy this book, please keep in mind - no pine or cedar bedding for rats! Much better is The Rat (An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet) by Ginger Cardinal (Howell Book House) or Rats! (A Fun & Care Book) by Debbie Ducommun (Bowtie Press) .



2. The author knows what she is talking about. You can tell that she has had a lot of experience with her own rats, has done the necessary research, has talked with other experts in the care and breeding of rats, and presents the information so that everyone can understand it. For the reviewer who commented on the "suggestion" that pine shavings be used, it should be understood that there is a lot of controversy about the use of cedar/pine shavings and when the book was published in 1996, the "experts" were still having their discussions about the subject. As far as the few photos of mice, it is unfortunate that the publishers did include them but that does not lessen the impact of the valuable information in the book. I learned a lot about rats from this book, which has more information in it than many other books on the subject. It's a great book, and people just starting out with pet rats will find it to be a great reference, one they will refer to many times.



3. This book is full of bad advice. She recommends using Pine which is almost as bad for rats as Cedar is! And some of the pictures in the book are of mice, not rats. ...



4. I found this great for me when I got my rats since i knew little or nothing about them. Now that i have had them a few years and have gone online for info. I can tell you, it's a great guide for NEWBIES but I also found there to be as much info online.
   If i read it now, i would say tell me something I dont know. But, if you have never owned one of the cutties..this is the bible of rats



5. If you know nothing about owning a rattie then this is the book for you. I knew essentially nothing so this was a great book. I must say, If you already have read up on owning a rat on the internet then you already know everything in this book.
   I feel the internet had as much if not more info.
   But the price was right and incase my computer goes down, it's helpful

1. This book is the greatest rabbit care book. It informs you on proper housing, proper handling, proper things to feed your rabbit, what sicknesses to look for in your rabbit, etc. In case you're indecisive about choosing a rabbit, the book also introduces you to over 40 varieties of rabbit and tells you about that rabbit. The book is filled with wonderful, clear pictures. I read this book after I got my rabbit (he's a Mini Rex), and even I learned some new things. I learned how to make some toys for my rabbit to play with, and the thought of rabbit toys had never entered my mind before. This book is perfect for people who would like to learn more about rabbits and rabbit care, and even people who own rabbits might learn something new. I highly recommend this book.

1. If you are planning on getting a hamster, and this is your first time, BUY THIS BOOK! The illustrations and photo's are excellent! I am an experienced hamster owner and breeder, and bought this book just because it looked great, but was amazed that it was chock full of a lot of helpful tips and information!

   A must for both veteren and first time owners of hamsters!
