1 comments about All About Your Rabbit (All About Your Pets Series).

  1. I think that if you want to get a rabbit, you should read this book because it tells you about rabbits so you know how many responsibilities there are in taking care of rabbits. The other books about pets are also very helpful.

2 comments about What's My Guinea Pig?: A Guide to Guinea Pig Breeds.

  1. I am a shower of the "fancier" guinea pigs and I really wish they had more on those breeds. Overall, it was a good book for identifying your pet shop guinea pig and for younger kids who want to read up on them. I'm looking for more books that actually have more to do with showing and grooming, though. But, like I said, it is an excellent kids book. If anyone has info on breeding/showing/grooming long-haired pigs like peruvians, e-mail me at skygirl@mediaone.net .

  2. Plain and simple, this is a very good book that describes the many varieties of guinea pigs. I wish there was more about the "rarer" breeds than a quick summary, but all in all, it is a very good book if you are a cavy fancier.

3 comments about Prairie Dogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This is a wonderful, detailed book for raising and caring for Prairie Dogs!
I'm using it as a reference guide for one of their cousins, the Richardson's Ground Squirrel! They have many of the same traits as the PD but they are about half of their size!

  2. This book was easy to read, has cute pictures, and gives you basic information on what things to consider and do before you buy a prairie dog, plus how to care for them after you have purchased. It is very important that new owners have this information since most pet stores selling prairie dogs are not educated in the proper care of these wonderful but demanding pets. It is not the best or the most detailed book I have read on the subject but you don't have to spend hours searching on the internet to find it and it is priced reasonably. For a new owner or anyone trying to decide if a prairie dog is the right pet for them I would highly recommend you purchase this book. For more expereinced owners who have other reference material you won't find anything new in this one and there are a few errors but you get to see more pictures of cute prairie dogs!

  3. Even if you have never seen a live prairie dog before, this book is an excellent primer on these industrious, energetic creatures. Prairie dogs are increasing in popularity as pets. This owner's manual systematically outlines the essentials about housing, feeding, handling and keeping prairie dogs healthy.
The section on behavior and training includes useful descriptions about their vocal repertoires and how to interpret their meanings. I especially like the many tables and sub-sections such as "do and don't" tips because they provide practical information that you can put to use (and can easily find).
Dr. Vanderlip describes how to keep a prairie dog healthy, and what to look for if they have health problems. As with other books in this series, the illustrations (numerous and excellent quality) and layout make the subject easy to understand and to use as a handy reference. Prairie dogs will benefit from the education that this provides their caretakers!

5 comments about Raising Rabbits the Modern Way (Garden Way Publishing Classic).

  1. This is a good book if you have never owned rabbits and this will be one of a few a books that you plan on reading, because despite the authors experience and education on the subjects in the book he seems as if he is rushing it just a little, granted it is old (last pub date was 1988), and also as if he is preaching his way rather than letting you develop experience through guidance through learning your own way, there are ways to screw up and there are those who get it no matter what. I highly suggest that you do your research before you consider owning rabbits, I disagree with the authors view on raising rabbits primarily for meat, with my animals I raise primarily for the coats and angora wool which I tan the hides and spin with down from my chickens) and sell them locally, meat is mearly a by product for me and believe me it can really help on your grocery bill. Just do yourself and all the rest of us who are in this business a favor, educate yourself first before you even buy a rabbit.

  2. this is a great book but it was revised in 1988. That is hardly the modern way. Actually, most things don't change but I found a few things that are not true (like what kind of hay to feed). Any way, consider all your possibilities before investing in this book.

  3. As beginners, we didn't feel this book gave us enough detailed information to care for the rabbits confidently.

  4. As a small homstead rabbit rasier, I was disappointed in buying this book. It seemed to be only for the commerical and show rabbit rasiers.

  5. This is one of the finest books ever written about rabbits . I use mine on an average of weekly, this book is a must have for rabbit raisers and breeders.

4 comments about Encyclopedia of Pet Rabbits.

  1. Seems to aim for the commercial producer. A guide to pet rabbits shouldn't have info on slaughtering methods, dressing the meat and pelts, etc. Care information is outdated.

  2. this book is really cool. I can't beleive how someone could be so good with rabbits like they are. I have a rabbit & this book has helped me so much. I thank you so much. She would be dead if you didn't write this book. She says thanks too.

  3. The original publishing date was in the early 1970's, and no information seems updated(even the pictures). The content leans more toward rabbit breeding and is more for someone who wants to learn about all the various breeds of rabbits rather than those who want to learn about their first pet rabbit.

  4. This book is filled with a wide variety of colored photos of the different types of rabbits. It also provides a good description of rabbit care and housing. In addition, there are medical tips and photos illustrating the results of poor care.

This is a useful guide for the young or old rabbit owner who may wish to explore other breeds. Excellent photos. Compact book.
