5 comments about Ferrets For Dummies.
- Ferrets for Dummies is a must have for anyone considering purchasing a ferret or who has one. Not only does it include what to expect from ferrets, but articles on illness, recipes for ferret treats and more.
- This book covers a variety of topics and I was very satisfied with the content. I'm not going to be able to get a ferret for a couple months so I bought this book to learn about them before getting one. I couldn't think of anything else I'd want in a ferret book. Because of how detailed the information is I decided I wouldn't have time for a ferret for a while yet. This book saved me from spending money on a ferret, a cage and all the supplies needlessly.
- Being prepared for your new fuzzy is the most important step you can do in your entire experience of owning a ferret. This is the most complete book on ferrets out there and is recommended by my ferret's vet and rescue shelter. If you are going to buy only one book, make this one it!
Not only good for those thinking about getting a ferret, but also good for those who just got one or even and old pro. It is packed with easy to read info!
- Great book! Lots of new information in addition to the first Ferrets for Dummies book. Diffidently a must have if you are looking into owning or adopting a ferret or if you already have ferrets. The more you can learn about your ferrets, the better for the ferrets.
- This is a wonderful book for the experienced ferret owner or the beginner. I've read other books and they only scratch the surface with information compared to this book. I learned so much from reading this. It covers every subject you can think of when it comes to ferrets in depth. I highly recommend this to any ferret owner.

5 comments about Rabbits For Dummies.
- This book is great to have on hand. It covers all the important topics relevant to having a rabbit as a companion. Topics such as dietary needs, health concerns to watch out for, behavior and litter box training. Just to name a few.
There are many very helpful illustrations that really do help put the text into context.
The additional rabbit resources this box provides is exceptional. It comes with a list of many great web sites devoted to rabbits' care. The book also comes with a list of contact information for many rabbit organizations, including rabbit supply stores, rescue groups and activity clubs. An excellent addition to any rabbit manual.
Although the book covers a wide array of topics in adequate detail, I find the book's method of presentation to be excessively cluttered with too many icons (labeled: technical stuff, warning, tip, important and remember) and check marks which are all too typical of the dummies books. I understand the need for the book to want certain things to stand out, but when these marks are used on every page it is hard to decipher which things truly are important as opposed to which things that might just otherwise be the point of a paragraph had the text been written in one. This is just me though, I do happen to know many people that like this style.
All in all, I do recommend having this book in your house if you have a rabbit living with you.

The Mischievous Hare
- i read through this book, and it not the most informative, nor best one out there. The information provided seems to be biased against breeders, and more pro rescue then anything else. Not that ther eis anything wrong with rescue. Its just that book is not balanced when it comes to aquiring and caring for rabbits. If you would like to read a good rabbit book that is up to date on good rabbit information go buy the ARBA guidebook to raising better rabbits and cavies. At least that one supports all aspects fo the rabbit industry, including breeding, showing, proper diet(pellets not lots of veggies) livestock, and keepng them as house pets.
- Not what I was looking for - strictly about rabbits as pets, no mention about their use as livestock.
Overall, one of the worst of the "Dummy" series books that I've ever seen.
- This book of the "Dummies" Series is a good general reference for new or prospective rabbit owners. I found it both entertaining and informative. One might take some of the advice with a "grain of salt"... Like any reference on children or pets, there may be some disagreements. This book has very few things that seem out of place. Of course, you might agree with all the advice. Just saying, it's a good reference and I am glad I made this purchase. The book is actually within 4 steps at all times! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/076450861X/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img
- This book covered so much information that was easy to understand. I was able to get my rabbit on a better diet because of reading this. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a rabbit.

5 comments about The Complete Guide to Rat Training: Tricks and Games for Rat Fun and Fitness.
- I can't say enough about the wonder of pet rats (they are my favorite pets of all time!) and of the wonderful Debbie Ducumon, who not only writes the best books on these fabulous creatures, but is also warm and accessable (she once answered the phone when I called with an emergency (no vets seem to know what to do with rats, which I find extremely strange and sad), and she answered by concerns perfectly. Didn't seem at all put out that a stranger would call her. God Bless the Rat Lady and her SpazRatz!
- Within three lessons I was able to train my Eva to follow my hand into a carrying case (which previously terrified her), stand up on command, etc. I think she recognized the sound of the box of treats opening more than any verbal commands, though, lol!
- When I first ventured into the hobby of raising and training rats for fun, I was a bit intimidated to say the least. But after having read this book, I truly felt very confident that I too could be a master rat trainer. And now I am! My first rat, Miss Daisy Duke, is simply amazing. When she is not rolling her own feces around in large circles, she enjoys riding a bike across a high wire! That's right. Little Miss Daisy is the best bike riding rat that you have ever seen and I owe it all to this book. My other rat, Mr. William is a racing rat that I have trained to run three miles to the local Walmart and come back home with a Snickers in less than two hours. Can your rat do that? I don't think so. Thank you Complete Guide!
- This book is great. It's teaches you step by step exactly what to do. Very colorful illustrations and easy to read. I highly recommend it!
- OK, it was a plastic baby from a cardboard building... so?? It's a pretty cute trick! The book was worth buying just for that picture. The rat is wearing a fireman's hat! eeeee!! I haven't read it all yet, but flipping through, this is a great quality book! Thanks Debbie!!

5 comments about The Hedgehog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.
- I love this book, and can't wait to care for my own hedgie! Thanks for making this book available. Loved the price and shipping times, too.
Snuffle snuffle . . . The sound of a happy hedgie. Thanks again.
- This book is good for the basics but it doesnt say much about the two most difficult things I'm dealing with with my baby hedgehog...nipping and litter training. I got much better advice online so if you read this and expect your hedgehog to be perfect and wear little hats in the garden as pictured in the book haha... you may want to do some more research first :) otherwise its good for basic info!
- Mostly this book has great information...The only major problem I have with the book is that it shows that you can use wire wheels, which are quite dangerous for hedgies. Their long legs can be trapped causing massive trauma. Things about their diet and cage setups and illness are quite helpful though.
- This is a fantastic guide to purchasing a hedgehog and understanding personalities, needs and everything to make a healthy happy home with your hedgy and whether it is a good pet for you too!
- Fantastic hedgehog book. It has been a great resource for me as a new hedgehog owner. The section about bonding with your hedgehog was very exciting.

5 comments about The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks).
- Very nice text and pictures. As a handbook should, it has information you need to read. Great reference book to have.
- "The Guinea Pig Handbook" is a great book not only to learn about piggies, but can also be used as a reference so it won't collect dust. As another amazon member stated, you should not use balls for guinea pigs because their spines are not that flexible, and a guinea pig should have at least 7.5 square feet in a cage, but besides this, the information is correct and very detailed. Plus, there's quite a few cute pictures of cavies! This is great for an adult.
With this book and access to www.guineapigcages.com, you have all the resources you need to have happy and healthy guinea pigs!
- We thought this was a good book. tells a history of the guiea pig as well as well as the vital information that you need to care for you guinea pig. My five year old asks me to read it to her. She wants to learn as much as she can about guinea pigs before she gets one.
- I am very impressed with "The Guinea Pig Handbook". It is actually very well written, and the information is reliable and presented clearly. Unlike a regular text book, or the other manuals that I got from the library, this book gives a historical background on guinea pigs, as well as a reliable source of information for any of the questions or problems I ran into while caring for Bert (my guinea pig). According to my neighbor, who is a veterinarian (and the person that recommended the book to me), there is nothing at all to worry about with reliability of the information in the book. He told me that all of Dr. Vanderlip's books are a great source of information for the beginner and the expert because the information is always clear and reliable.
- The Guinea Pig Handbook is an excellent resource for everyone who owns a cavy. I have purchased many Guinea Pig books, but this one stands out among all of them and is the one that I constantly refer to. The photographs are beautiful and the information is thorough and detailed. I highly recommend this book to all Guinea Pig owners, whether they have years of experience or they have just purchased their new pet.

5 comments about Choosing and Keeping Chickens.
- This book was very helpful in analyzing the different breeds and helping us select which chickens were best suited for us. We decided on 4 different breeds 2 of each. Buff Orpingtons, Delawares, Golden Wyandottes, and Jersey Giants. We have variety and they all are getting along just fine.
- I make it a rule only to review books on subjects I know something about. Although we have something approaching 100 birds, I am relatively new to keeping chickens and this review is based on those early experiences coupled with the frequent use of this book.
Author Chris Graham is the Editor of a leading UK poultry magazine with considerable knowledge of the subject. Whilst the book itself is somewhat disjointed in parts, I have found it to be both an enormous help and, so far at least, able to cover each topic I have needed to consult. In addition, the photography - covering various breeds, equipment and other items, is of the highest standard.
Arranged into; Which breeds, getting started, care, hatching & rearing, showing, different breeds, hybrids, pests and diseases, the book appears to cover all the main topics of interest to the beginner with a fair degree of thoroughness. Personally, I have consulted this book on an almost daily basis for the past several weeks and have yet to find it lacking.
My only real complaint is the order in which the different breeds are arranged. I would have preferred a straight forward alphabetical order of all types. This would allow quick access to whichever variety I was seeking at the time. Instead, they are arranged into 5 sections, albeit alphabetically within each, by; Hard feather, soft feather heavy, soft feather light and so forth.
I do also feel that the RRP of GBP £12:99 is a tad too expensive - although I was quite happy with the GBP £7:50 I paid for my own copy. All things considered, this is possibly the best buy for the complete beginner.
NM
- I have many chicken books and each usually excels in at least one area. This book rates high for it's pictures of chicken breeds and good descriptions of their personality for a low cost. It also tells you the average egg production and what type of living quarters each breed needs to be happy and healthy. It also offers information as to which breeds are best for family pets and urban living, or if they are better for experienced keepers. Basic care is discussed fairly well. It is best to read more than one book if you want to learn about keeping chickens or any pet as there is more than one way to keep them happy and healthy. I did enjoy reading and referring back to Choosing and Keeping Chickens and recommend it highly for beginners.
- I'm so glad I choose to order Chris Graham's book, "Choosing and Keeping Chickens." It was recommended by someone online who said it wasn't as boring as some of the other books on the market. They were right. It is informative and the pictures are great! I now feel much more confident about caring for my hens.
- The advice about breeds was spot-on. When they say flighty, they mean it. And when they recommend newbies steer clear of a specific breed, the advice is worth listening to. I had a couple of Sicilian Buttercups that kept making it over an eight-foot fence and dug up plants the other chickens always ignored. If I'd listened to the advice in this book, I never would have got those chicks. The availability information seems more accurate for the UK than the USA. The book doesn't contain usable plans for a coop, but there are a to of good ones online, i.e.: http://www.backyardchickens.com/coopdesigns.html And the pictures are beautiful. My kids read it like a picture book.

5 comments about Rats: Complete Care Guide.
- Detailed. Accurate, excellent information. The author's extremely knowledgeable. If you have a rat, a good book to have.
- I am getting rats and wanted to make sure I did tons of research first. I looked online and was impressed with Debbie Ducommun's website so purchased this book.
This is the most complete collection of information I have found on rats. She covers all aspects of rat care and ownership. I am so glad I read this before getting my rats and will keep it as a reference.
A must read for any rat owner...or anyone thinking of getting rats!
- Rats: Complete Care Guide While a good basic information guide, I have found several incorrect and misleading facts in this book. While being highly detailed in the nature of rats I found the health and diseases section quite misinforming. She paints the picture that mycoplasmosis as a horrible infection, and that the symptoms progress quickly, and misstates that rats squeaking is a form of wheezing. A better book to learn about mycoplasma, and how it can cause secondary infections and over long periods of time effect your rat is Rats. Another troubling mistake I found that worried me was her statement that humans can transmit strep throat to their rats, and cause the rats to die "In three days". This is false, there are two strains of streptococcus and the one that causes step throat in humans cannot infect rats. However streptococcus pneumonia, a second strain, can be transmitted, but if you had this you would be in the hospital. All in all Rats: Complete Care Guide had me running to my vet too much for my liking, and I would recommend to rat owners to skip this one.
- Very helpful, full of everything you need to care for a new pet rat. It includes a lot of detailed information that the pet store didn't know about (cedar chips are bad, for example). Also, there are some interesting things about rat behavior that are helpful in understanding a new pet. We were worried that our new rat was "chirping" while grooming himself, but according to the book this is very normal. I feel much better about the choices we make in selecting bedding, food and fun for our new pet after reading this book.
- My daughter begged for a pet rat. We read lots of books and bought this one. None of them really let me know ahead of time that the males pee on each other and are stinky, even if you wash them they smell like pee. I got her the rats and that's how I found this tidbit out. She adores them and they are every bit as intelligent and charming as the book says, but they are dirty and gross me out sometimes with their hygeine (or lack of it). If you want rats and have never had them before, be warned. But if you'll get them anyways, this is a good guide to how to care for them.
The females aren't dirty and are cleaner.

5 comments about House Rabbit Handbook: How to Live With an Urban Rabbit.
- Very informative, and an essential must-have book for anybody who has a pet rabbit. I've had pet rabbits since childhood, and due to the lack of knowledge that many veterinarians have of exotic animals (such as rabbits), I've found it imperative to have a good, detailed house rabbit manual lying around. I have four of them, and this is my favorite one. This book covers such topic as: preparing your home for a new pet bunny, administering care to minor injuries and how to bond two bunnies effectively. I'm currently working on that last one!
Recently our two pet rabbits got into a minor skirmish lasting only one second before we broke it up, and we were a little mystified and hesitant over what to do when our oldest bunny got a scratch on the nose which drew a tiny amount of blood. I quickly flipped thru this book and found the appropriate section to deal with the matter. Because we were prepared by having a first aid kit and this book on hand, we were able to treat the wound immediately and nothing more became of that scratch. I'd like to thank this book for helping us handle that situation.
I highly recommend.
Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.
The Mischievous Hare
- Read the reviews and wanted to buy this as I recently got my first rabbit. Then I saw the price. Can someone tell me why this book is $119? If it is this good isn't it printed regularly and available like most books that are, say, $25?
Puzzled bunny owner in Hawaii
- This common sense book is great for both the urban and rural rabbits as well as the novice and the more experienced rabbit owner.
The author obviously knows her rabbits and their behavior. She gives you great tips on adopting, setting up the space for your new addition as well as outlining hazards that may harm your new friend (or you!).
You'll also find comprehensive information for the litterbox training of your bunny and information on helping your new friend bond with your existing animals.
The sections on health and feeding are especially valuable for the first time bunny owner as well as a great refresher for the more experienced bunny bonder!
- In a quest for rabbit info i landed on this book. Can somebody please tell me why it is $75?
- I bought this the other day for the bargain price of $4.62 through the Amazon marketplace. It arrived in under 7 days and in excellent condition.
The author is an experienced rabbit handler who has worked for years with the House Rabbit Society (Google same for their web site) to care for, and advance the cause of, rabbits.
In particular, Harriman does an excellent job accounting for the rabbits' needs, social as well as diet. She makes it clear that rabbit ownership is not at all like owning a pet turtle, and lays out clearly what you'll need to be ready to provide for them in terms of care and, for want of a better word, "mateship"--rabbits are intensely social animals that need to be involved in the life of a family.
We will probably be adopting our first rabbit in the next year or so. Harriman's book turned out to be an excellent primer, and I'd recommend it without hesitation!

- This is one of the better pet rabbit books that has been published recently. It is very well balanced, simple to read, and very informative about keeping rabbits. It covers all aspects of rabbit onwership, from rescue, to breeding and showing. I would recommend this one for any pet owner, rescue worker, or breeder.
- The book is excellent the price was fair for all the information the book gives you on rabbit care. The delivery is fast so I give the whole thing a A+++++.
- We have three rabits and I gain a lot of knowledge regarding rabbits with this book. It is easy to read and has many information.
- A lot of good information and some good photos. I have yet to find one definitive house rabbit guide, but this covers a lot of the basics: history, deciding if rabbit is right pet, adopting a rabbit, setting up living space and health. There is also a great section on rabbit behavior and behavior problems.
Worth buying before or after bringing a rabbit into your home!
