5 comments about Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits, 4th Edition.
- I would like to note that I have kept rabbit both for meat and for pets. That being said:
This book was written for rabbit breeders. It is not for the pet owner. Some of the information, while is was acceptable 10 years ago, is no longer worthwhile. Sore hocks is not a myth. Call a vet who sees rescued rabbits and ask them if you don't believe me. Please, the rabbits are begging you. It was at that point I had to put the book down. While this book is informational it is also incorrect about a few things and sore hocks is one of them. Why keep you rabbits on wire anyhow? Mine use a litter box and my roses love it.
I am very disappointed and would not recommend this book to anyone. I have m,any complaints with this book although I chose to share only one. Better books are out there. Please look for them.
- This book was disappointing on various levels. While it contains a lot of technical information and parts of it are, in fact, very useful, it seems to approach the whole concept of raising rabbits from the angle of how to turn animals into little rabbit-producing factories, maximising output at every turn with insufficient consideration for animal welfare, and certainly no good advice to people who consider their rabbits to be pets and companions first, before they are money-making devices. I particularly noticed the section on 'forced matings'. Of course, in civilised society, we have a different word for that...
The book is a strong advocate of commercial feeds, and offers little useful advice to anyone wanting to use anything else (such as home-grown grain), except to tell you that if you don't use commercial food, you are little better than an idiot.
It also leaves out some basic, important details about rabbit physiology, such as coprophagy, life span and how many years a doe can be used for breeding.
If you want to turn a profit from a commercial enterprise, this is a great book for you. If you want your rabbits to be happy and content, look for a different book.
- Absolutely the best rabbit book around! This guy has been raising rabbits since he was a little kid and he really knows his stuff. He has a wonderful concept (and I haven't seen this anywhere else) for building and setting up rabbit cages. He talks about things (like raising earth worms beneath the rabbit cages) that other people don't even mention. He has excellent advise about the nuts-and-bolts of raising rabbits (how often to breed, how to kindle in cold climates, how to feed, etc). If I could only have ONE rabbit book this would be it. And be sure to get the most recent edition (I think it was published in 2009 or 2010). It really is different (more updated and better) than previous editions. Also, the best price I found for this book was on Amazon.com.
- This book was exactly what I was looking for. A good descriptive book that talks to the reader like they are right there. Bob takes you through his years of experience in rabbit raising. He tells you how to start right, and how to make your rabbitry something that you can enjoy for years to come. It is a very good beginners book as well as an expert book. No matter where you are in the proccess of raising rabbits, Bob talks about the modern ways that you can improve.
- Very helpful book for those wanting to raise a bunch of rabbits!
I love how practical this writer is! He covers rabbits being great for so many purposes and how to enjoy the benefits of each of those purposes. ie.
* raising, care and breeding (of course)
* also killing and dressing them up for meals and how healthy they are to eat
* selling young to various markets/sources
* using their droppings for excellent fertilizer (and even to sell as fertilizer)
* ideas of having a worm farm with that fertilizer (for even further money making avenues)
the list goes on.... it's a great book, highly recommended!

5 comments about Rabbits For Dummies.
- I became a rabbit owner when a pair of orphaned week old kits were handed to me. I struggled with the internet trying to decide which "expert" knew what they were talking about. The kits lived and I went looking for something to show a cat owner, who never had a rabbit in her life, how to raise them. This book is GREAT for a beginner, and I would bet it could give information to an experienced rabbit owner. The pair (GwenifEars and Merlin) are now about ready to visit the vet to be spayed and neutered and this book has helped me immeasurable in getting them to this age. I still look to it for advice and it is becomming "rabbit eared" but none the less useful.
Personally, I think this is a terrific book for anyone who owns or wants to own a rabbit.
- This is a good book for house rabbits or those who want basic information but it does not (in my opinion) get deep enough into the differing breeds and their characteristics. And the author seemed biased against the bulk rabbit farmers. I usually find the "Dummies"series of books to be more informational that this particular book, but it was an easy read and I would advise new rabbits owners to read it as well as other books on the care of rabbits to form their own opinions
- This book is great to have on hand. It covers all the important topics relevant to having a rabbit as a companion. Topics such as dietary needs, health concerns to watch out for, behavior and litter box training. Just to name a few.
There are many very helpful illustrations that really do help put the text into context.
The additional rabbit resources this box provides is exceptional. It comes with a list of many great web sites devoted to rabbits' care. The book also comes with a list of contact information for many rabbit organizations, including rabbit supply stores, rescue groups and activity clubs. An excellent addition to any rabbit manual.
Although the book covers a wide array of topics in adequate detail, I find the book's method of presentation to be excessively cluttered with too many icons (labeled: technical stuff, warning, tip, important and remember) and check marks which are all too typical of the dummies books. I understand the need for the book to want certain things to stand out, but when these marks are used on every page it is hard to decipher which things truly are important as opposed to which things that might just otherwise be the point of a paragraph had the text been written in one. This is just me though, I do happen to know many people that like this style.
All in all, I do recommend having this book in your house if you have a rabbit living with you.
Darien Summers, author of the Mischievous Hare, a children's book
The Mischievous Hare
- i read through this book, and it not the most informative, nor best one out there. The information provided seems to be biased against breeders, and more pro rescue then anything else. Not that ther eis anything wrong with rescue. Its just that book is not balanced when it comes to aquiring and caring for rabbits. If you would like to read a good rabbit book that is up to date on good rabbit information go buy the ARBA guidebook to raising better rabbits and cavies. At least that one supports all aspects fo the rabbit industry, including breeding, showing, proper diet(pellets not lots of veggies) livestock, and keepng them as house pets.
- Not what I was looking for - strictly about rabbits as pets, no mention about their use as livestock.
Overall, one of the worst of the "Dummy" series books that I've ever seen.

5 comments about Manual of Clinical Procedures in the Dog, Cat, & Rabbit.
- Book was in great shape exactly what i expected, came in a fair amount of time within the dates estimated.
- I order it and received it less then a week which was perfect cause i needed it immediately for school.
- very usefull tool for a busy vet, student or even technician.
Very clear and simple exposition of the procedures. Anyone, even the most experienced professional, will find something to learn.
- This book was required by my teacher for class.
Their is a small section for rabbits. It includes restraint, and selected clinical procedures ( intravenous catheterization, bandaging the catheter for fluid adminstration, blood collection from jugular catheter, oral adminstration of liquid medication/tablet, intravenous injection, urine collection, & endotracheal tube intabation).
Most of the book is dedicated to the dog & cat. The sections include chapters on restraint, blood collection, injection techniques, placement and care of IV caths, oral adminstration of medications, dermatologic procedures, impression preparations, fine needle aspiration biopsy, ophthalmic procedures, ear care, pedicure, urethral catheterization, rectal exam, anal sac expression and cannulation, enema, skin prep., intubation, gastric lavage, dental prophylaxis, nasopharyngeal procedures, teansteacheal aspiration, centesis, peritoneal cath. & lavage, semen collection and insemination, vaginal exam and speciman collection, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, rapid evaluation of bleeding and clotting disorders. I only gave a 4 because the book has no actual photographs, just illustrations and they are black and white. I work with cats and I think some of the cat restraint techniques are way off. Otherwise the book is great!
- I'm a freshman in veterinary medical college. And I go to my seniors' animal hospital every weekend for studying and assitanting them. Before I assitant them, I had to know about treating animals with the right way. Then my seniors gave this book to me. I think this book is very good for Vet.technician. This book is really detailed for every part of the way of treating pets. I am sure that this book will be helpful to you, veterinary technician or a student often doing assistance in hospital just like me. But i am sure it will not help any junior or senior studying veterinary medicine.

5 comments about The Complete Guide to Rat Training: Tricks and Games for Rat Fun and Fitness.
- Not only are there great tricks and techniques available in this book, but you also learn how your rats try to communicate to you and it helps you to really bond with your furry friends.
- This book is perfect for rat lovers. The huge variety of games and tricks in this book is amazing, with clear explanations, descriptions and beautiful photos. The author is full of knowledge and experience, and her warmth, love and respect for these wonderful, little animals is obvious. A lovely book, well worth having, and a great way of learning how to have fun with your rat.
- I have read several books on pet rats, and the contents are quite similar. This one is different. Besides basic information about rat care, it povides a lot of details about plans and designs to train pet rats. This might be the only book a pet owner needs.
- I can't say enough about the wonder of pet rats (they are my favorite pets of all time!) and of the wonderful Debbie Ducumon, who not only writes the best books on these fabulous creatures, but is also warm and accessable (she once answered the phone when I called with an emergency (no vets seem to know what to do with rats, which I find extremely strange and sad), and she answered by concerns perfectly. Didn't seem at all put out that a stranger would call her. God Bless the Rat Lady and her SpazRatz!
- Within three lessons I was able to train my Eva to follow my hand into a carrying case (which previously terrified her), stand up on command, etc. I think she recognized the sound of the box of treats opening more than any verbal commands, though, lol!

5 comments about The Guinea Pig Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks).
- GREAT HANDBOOK EASY TO READ WITH HUNDREDS OF GREAT PICTURES/ILLUSTRATIONS!! A MUST FOR ANY GUINEA PIG OWNER!!
- This is the best book I have found on cavies. Easy to read and it covers every point of Guinea Pigs. A must have for everyone that is thinking about getting a Guinea Pig.
- Very nice text and pictures. As a handbook should, it has information you need to read. Great reference book to have.
- "The Guinea Pig Handbook" is a great book not only to learn about piggies, but can also be used as a reference so it won't collect dust. As another amazon member stated, you should not use balls for guinea pigs because their spines are not that flexible, and a guinea pig should have at least 7.5 square feet in a cage, but besides this, the information is correct and very detailed. Plus, there's quite a few cute pictures of cavies! This is great for an adult.
With this book and access to www.guineapigcages.com, you have all the resources you need to have happy and healthy guinea pigs!
- We thought this was a good book. tells a history of the guiea pig as well as well as the vital information that you need to care for you guinea pig. My five year old asks me to read it to her. She wants to learn as much as she can about guinea pigs before she gets one.

5 comments about The Rabbit Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks).
- Oh this book is very helpful. I'm kind of a newbie with bunnies (had one when I was a little girl) and I wasn't planning on adopting one, but I saw Pamela in a market kind of left alone so I took her home very unexpected, so I wasn't prepared for anything and this book helped me a lot knowing the "bunny talk" and if there was something wrong with her health (actully she turned out to be a male bunny haha)So if you're new in sharing the house with a bunny this book would really help you with the basics.
- The book is very informative. However, there should be more information on baby rabbits - all their stages of growth.
- This book provided very good information about preparing for and taking care of my two pet rabbits. I have continued to reference it now, even though I have had my rabbits for over a year. It has been very helpful with looking into behavior issues, and helping with my concerns when something doesn't seem to be right. Overall this is a very useful book for new rabbit owners.
- Excellent book with loads of helpful information. A MUST HAVE for anyone thinking about getting rabbits.
- This is the best rabbit book. Its great for the beginners and also for experienced ones.
After reading this book, i understood my rabbit behavior better.

5 comments about Ferrets For Dummies.
- Ferrets for Dummies is a must have for anyone considering purchasing a ferret or who has one. Not only does it include what to expect from ferrets, but articles on illness, recipes for ferret treats and more.
- This book covers a variety of topics and I was very satisfied with the content. I'm not going to be able to get a ferret for a couple months so I bought this book to learn about them before getting one. I couldn't think of anything else I'd want in a ferret book. Because of how detailed the information is I decided I wouldn't have time for a ferret for a while yet. This book saved me from spending money on a ferret, a cage and all the supplies needlessly.
- Being prepared for your new fuzzy is the most important step you can do in your entire experience of owning a ferret. This is the most complete book on ferrets out there and is recommended by my ferret's vet and rescue shelter. If you are going to buy only one book, make this one it!
Not only good for those thinking about getting a ferret, but also good for those who just got one or even and old pro. It is packed with easy to read info!
- Great book! Lots of new information in addition to the first Ferrets for Dummies book. Diffidently a must have if you are looking into owning or adopting a ferret or if you already have ferrets. The more you can learn about your ferrets, the better for the ferrets.
- This is a wonderful book for the experienced ferret owner or the beginner. I've read other books and they only scratch the surface with information compared to this book. I learned so much from reading this. It covers every subject you can think of when it comes to ferrets in depth. I highly recommend this to any ferret owner.

1 comments about Happy Hamster.
- From the food-prep point of view the book is excellent, with complete lists of materials and tools, and clear large color photos illustrating every single step including "Admire your work" and "Clean up the mess". (I would enjoy a human-food cookbook that was like this.) There are only about 19 recipies which isn't a whole lot.
I myself don't have a hamster to cook for. I bought the book for the ideas behind the clever hamster-friendly foods and for the pictures of the hamsters chowing down on the same. The enjoyment that Mom and I have gotten has been worth the purchase price IMO.

5 comments about Dwarf Hamsters (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- I just finished reading this book from cover to cover. Loved it. I got it because of the great reviews, and because I got a dwarf hamster for the first time, and had only had the classic Syrian hamsters as a child. The author did a great job about giving details for each species of dwarf, as opposed to talking about them as one homogeneous group, like other books. They really do have their differences. I'll let you read the other reviews to see more about all that the book covers. It seems geared towards the adult or older teenage pet owner, though you can probably tell that from reading some of the pages in the "Click to Look Inside" Amazon feature.
I think one important thing the reviewers haven't covered yet is the author's credentials. You can read them all on page 111 when you do the "Look Inside". Go to the back cover first, and then flip back a few pages. In short, the author has a D.V.M (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine), and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Univ of California at Davis. Dr. Vanderlip has "provided veterinary care to exotic and domestic animal species for more than thirty years...authored twenty books on pet care....served as Clinical Veterinarian for the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine...." [on and on], has served as Chief of Veterinary Services for NASA, and even does seminars. Not only that, but apparently her husband, who is "an expert in laboratory and exotic animal medicine" has also helped her obtain recent scientific info. The book is copyrighted 2009 and 1999. So, yeah, it seems pretty darn up-to-date.
- This book is very informative and well thought out. I particularly enjoyed the section titled, "understanding your dwarf hamster". I highly recommend this book for beginner hamster owners and experts alike. 5 stars!
- Imformative little book, I bought it for my 9 year old daughter to know what she should & should not do. Very easy to follow format.
- I am a new hamster keeper!
Things have change since I kept hamsters, even they size. So this little book help with all the new and old stuff including husbandry. It will explain the differance between hamsters and the to how to do and don't.
I love the size and amount of information.
Hope this help you with your pocket pet.
- You will find unknown things about your furry friend, such as what they express with their body language, details on the different kinds of dwarf hamsters, health section, breeding section...it's a complete guide to understand your pet, and it has a great variety of pics!!!
