5 comments about Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits: Breeds, Care, Facilities.

  1. Excellent book, would recomend to any body who is thinking about raising rabbits. I wish there was more in there about raising them for meat.

  2. This is a book designed for rabbit exploitation- meat and commercial breeding, etc. If you want to keep a healthy AND happy pet rabbit who will become part of the family, this book is not for you. Instead refer to Marnell Harrison's book or Kathy Smith's books on rabbit care and vitality. These books lean toward a stance that rabbits are creatures that should be treated like dogs or cats, and NOT like livestock, which they SHOULD!

  3. This guide contains just about everything you need to know about raising meat rabbits. Although geared toward mass production, there is also some good advice for pet owners.

  4. Storey's Guides are primarily written for producers and breeders of livestock, not for "pets" (although most deal with livestock animals as pets), and most Storey's guides give a certain amount of slaughtering information as well as recipes. Don't even pick this book up if you are offended by the concept of eating rabbits- this isn't the book for you. For people who want to raise, breed and eat rabbits, however, it meets a need. I've always found the Storey's Guides to be pretty good informationally speaking and the authors usually have extensive experience raising the animals concerned. This book may have a few light sections, but I think it's a good starting reference, perhaps the best out there at present. It's certainly better than any other rabbit book I've seen so far.

  5. Contains everything you need to know, and is easy to follow.

5 comments about Rabbits for Dummies.

  1. Perfect for someone who has never had a rabbit. We have learned much!

  2. As with all of the "Dummies" publication, this book provides very thorough, elementary information for would-be rabbit families. The imformation is broken down into chapters for ease of use. It offers insight into these amazingly complex animals, their care and distinct personalities.

  3. This book covers every aspect of bunny care. Very thorough. I recommend it.

  4. This is a good book and seems to have a great deal of information, but I felt there was a definite bias against people who raise rabbits as livestock and (shockingly) actually eat them. This is a book solely for pet owners, not for 4-H students, FFA students, homesteaders. I understand that rabbit fanciers probably don't want and shouldn't have to be confronted by instructions how to slaughter and dress "Fluffy", but I wish there had been something that stated that this was a "pet book" somewhere on the book's cover before I spent $17 on it. We have a loved pet rabbit, but we also have meat rabbits. If you want to learn about rabbits as pets, this is probably a good book for you. If you want a book about raising rabbits commercially or harvesting them for meat, you might look into Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits by Bob Bennett. He has had 5 rabbitries and has raised rabbits for six decades.

  5. I've owned two rabbits before and I was shocked to find out how much has changed since I last owned a rabbit. The information I found in it was right-on. The behavioral problem trouble-shooting chapter is a bit slim, and the disease/health problems list leaves a bit to be desired. But the overall care chapters are superb and up-to-date on recently accepted practices.

5 comments about Rats: Complete Care Guide.

  1. I bought this book after getting my three ratties, and have found it very helpful. It has information on almost everything to do with rats. It has what to feed them, what not to feed them, games to play with them, what to do on a hot day, how to find a good vet ect ect. The author's voice sounds kind and caring but also informative and I must say, I use this book all the time! It's a must-have for all rat owners.
    Highly recommended!

  2. I truly enjoyed this book and it has all the information one needs to take care of a rat!

  3. This is the best and most accurate rattie care guide I've read. Ms Ducommun is know as the Rat Lady and has been one of the best rat health experts for many many years.
I have 5 rats myself and even though I'm experienced in their care I found this book interesting to read. I think every rat enthusiast should have this on their book shelf :-)

  4. We landed ourselves a pet rat a little over a year ago. Neither of us really knew much about rats, but we muddled through researching here and there on the internet and asking questions at the pet shop, etc. Our rat seemed healthy and happy, but I always worried that we might be missing something.

I received this book for Christmas, and by the end of Christmas morning I had read 2/3 of it! It is such an interesting and informative read. It put my mind at ease on several issues, taught me quite a bit and it is great to know that I have it as a reference if anything should ever happen to our precious Ratatouille! Like another reviewer already said, it might not go into quite enough detail for people who already know a lot about rats, but for your everyday rat owner, I think it is more than sufficient.

Oh, and, after reading in this book that you should never keep a solitary rat, unless you can spend several hours a day with it (we manage a couple of hours a day), we are off to get a house mate for her, in the new year. Of course, now we have this book, we know how to successfully introduce the new rat in the correct and proper way ;o)

  5. I have a pet rat, and this book was helpful. I especially liked the chapters telling about games you can play with your rat and showing them. It was also very helpful on food, cages, and health. I would recommend it to people of all ages.

5 comments about Rabbit Handbook, The (Barron's Pet Handbooks).

  1. This book was written by a veterinarian and is recommended by my veterinarian. It offers great guidelines for medical care and makes medical conditions easy to understand which helps me work better with my veterinarian. In addition, there is valuable information on behavior, training, diet and housing.

  2. I thought this book was great. I read all about the rabbit diseases, so when this book said that a certain symptom was normal I ignored. Now my rabbit is dead, and I know to go to my vet. Good as a starter book, but only that.

  3. I bought this book before I adopted my first rabbit, just to make sure that I could handle whatever responsibilities come along with having a pet rabbit. The book gives you advice on which breed is best for you, what to expect as your bunny grows, what to feed, what not to feed, recommended toys, behavior interpretations, common rabbit diseases, symptoms and treatments. I still refer to it whenever I have any concerns. Nothing will substitute a vet visit when your bunny is sick, but you can at least have an idea when a vet visit is necessary. I also refer to this book as my bible. The information is concise and easy to understand, and also easy to find, as the book is very well organized. The only suggestion I would make is to inclue a picture of a Flemish Giant, because that is fast becoming a very popular pet breed. Other than that, the book is perfect.

  5. I received this book a few days ago and have basically read it from cover to cover.
I feel the information in this book is for the most part accurate. One thing that I think should be added into all companion animal informative books (whether it be a book such as this, made for the average pet owner, or a book as a tutorial for beginning breeders) is more information on reasons to NOT breed your pet. The overpopulation of companion animals in this country is outstanding. By educating the uneducated regarding breeding this problem can be brought under control. I was happy to see that it was mentioned to not breed your pet, however I think a more in depth discussion of it should have been added.
I thought the feeding guidelines were a little off as well, but I have seen much worse.

4 stars to Karen Gendron and Michele Earle-Bridges for a great book!

5 comments about Manual of Clinical Procedures in the Dog, Cat, & Rabbit.

  1. very usefull tool for a busy vet, student or even technician.
Very clear and simple exposition of the procedures. Anyone, even the most experienced professional, will find something to learn.

  2. This book was required by my teacher for class.
Their is a small section for rabbits. It includes restraint, and selected clinical procedures ( intravenous catheterization, bandaging the catheter for fluid adminstration, blood collection from jugular catheter, oral adminstration of liquid medication/tablet, intravenous injection, urine collection, & endotracheal tube intabation).
Most of the book is dedicated to the dog & cat. The sections include chapters on restraint, blood collection, injection techniques, placement and care of IV caths, oral adminstration of medications, dermatologic procedures, impression preparations, fine needle aspiration biopsy, ophthalmic procedures, ear care, pedicure, urethral catheterization, rectal exam, anal sac expression and cannulation, enema, skin prep., intubation, gastric lavage, dental prophylaxis, nasopharyngeal procedures, teansteacheal aspiration, centesis, peritoneal cath. & lavage, semen collection and insemination, vaginal exam and speciman collection, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, rapid evaluation of bleeding and clotting disorders. I only gave a 4 because the book has no actual photographs, just illustrations and they are black and white. I work with cats and I think some of the cat restraint techniques are way off. Otherwise the book is great!

  3. I'm a freshman in veterinary medical college. And I go to my seniors' animal hospital every weekend for studying and assitanting them. Before I assitant them, I had to know about treating animals with the right way. Then my seniors gave this book to me. I think this book is very good for Vet.technician. This book is really detailed for every part of the way of treating pets. I am sure that this book will be helpful to you, veterinary technician or a student often doing assistance in hospital just like me. But i am sure it will not help any junior or senior studying veterinary medicine.

  4. This book reveals a good intent that fell slightly short. The authors evidently know their stuff very well and describe many procedures with meticulousness. However, necessary details are missing on ocassion, like where to locate the vessel they recommend to inject. The illustations are satisfactory but sometimes insufficient. One wonders whether photographs could have been better in these cases. I missed some procedures that are common in veterinary clinics today like x-rays and some small surgery techniques that are common in a clinical setting. For examaple, I would have liked to find some pointers on how to operate an x-ray machine. The book is very useful and well worth buying it, but the authors could make it even better if they surveyed the needs of their colleagues before attempting the next edition.

  5. I am a director of a veterinary technology program and this is a required text. It outlines the "how-to-do" of procedures as simple as cephalic venipuncture to complicated procedures such as gastrotomy tube placement. The value of this book lies in the fact that it lists every supply or piece of equipment you will need to perform a procedure and then walks you through it step by step. The illustrations are awesome. This book would be a valuable reference for a practitioner or technician who wants to perform a procedure for the first time or needs a refresher on the procedure. The inclusion of rabbits to this edition is a welcome addition as it outlines procedures likely performed in practice.

5 comments about Training Your Pet Rat.

  1. I found this book to be helpful for how to train your rats. It has different tricks and games, and is full of interesting advice. The author's voice is humourous while informative. While it is not a rat care book - I would get Debbie Ducommun's rat book for that - it also has information on looking after and caring for your rat though not as detailed. It's a must-have for those who are interested in training your rats and playing games with them.

  2. I love it... haven't finished it yet but expect to soon. The half+ that I've already covered includes all the fine points of how to prepare for your new pet(s) and how to select them - GOOD advice! Now I'm at the fun part and am looking forward to implement the easy and straightforward ideas on training. In addition - it's a light read, sprinkled w/ humor... makes it even more enjoyable.

  3. First page out, reminded us to get an aquarium not a wire cage to keep the babies from escaping!

  4. I bought this hoping to learn more about the training of rats. It does have some on training. More than most books, however I would have liked more. For those beginners it also includes a very complete chapters on selection, care, housing and medical. I was dissapointed it didn't include anthing on litter-box training. I have heard some about litter-box training and believe it could be a usefull adition to this book. All in all a good care and maintance guide, with some ideas for training.

  5. I wish I had picked up this book BEFORE I picked up my two bundles of joy. This book lets you know just about everything you need to know BEFORE you think of picking up a ratty, or two, and just about what you need to know right after. It's great to fall back on too! MAHALO to the author's anc contributors!

3 comments about Guinea Piglopaedia: A Complete Guide to Guinea Pig Care (Complete Guide To... (Ringpress Books)).

  1. Every responsible guinea pig owner should keep all the information they can possibly find close at hand. This book is certainly an excellent addition to my home library as I found it easy to use and understand.

  2. This is a great book. It's concise format made it a very easy read. It was very detailed and very easy to navigate through. A must have for the guinea pig enthusiast! It has a very wide subject base.

  3. This book goes beyond the cute pictures, and don't forget vitamin C. It is almost a vet reference. If it is not the best cavy book out there, it is close.

5 comments about Dwarf Hamsters (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. You will find unknown things about your furry friend, such as what they express with their body language, details on the different kinds of dwarf hamsters, health section, breeding section...it's a complete guide to understand your pet, and it has a great variety of pics!!!

  2. I had been frustrated when looking for dwarf hamster information since so much that I found was focused on the larger size hamsters. This book solved my problems, plus is has species specific information (Campbell's versus Robo, etc). My one complaint is that they do not properly address the issue of diabetes in dwarf hamsters and even have pictures of Campbell's eating fruit.
Regardless, the gem of this book is in the pictures. The photos are of Cute Overload quality and even the illustrations are adorable. Worth buying just for the photos!

  3. This book has sooooo many details abouut dwarf hamsters. It tells of many tips and how-to's of taking care of your dwarf hamster pet. It also gives much information about understanding your hamster, what it needs, and about the history and origins of the 4 different types of dwarf hamsters. Another section includes the breeding of dwarf hamsters. It is very scientifical and educational and can really help you with your house pet.

  4. Very informative book on dwarf hamsters. Wife and daughter both thought it was a very good book to start out with. What information it didn't have we found online. Overall they like it very much.

  5. This book was an great resource for my dwarf hamster and helped me learn all I need to know about taking care of it. I totally recommend this book.

5 comments about Stories Rabbits Tell: A Natural and Cultural History of a Misunderstood Creature.

  1. I have to admit that parts of this book are hard to read. However, I am very glad that I did. From the title I initially assumed it would be more about the stories of individual rabbits - but it is much more based on rabbit's cultural history. It was a highly fascinating and I learned a lot.

This is not a how-to book for rabbit owners or a feel good read - but it is important to learn about the history of rabbits in our society.

  2. I quite enjoyed the first two sections of the book, which were filled with much historical and societal information on rabbits. The last section detailed too much of the disturbing facts about those rabbits who live only for experimental testing, meat, or breeding. However, just because I found it too upsetting to do more than skim does not mean it should be left out. Perhaps with open knowledge of these industries, people can do more to change how the businesses are run.

  3. I have to say this is the best books I have ever found on Rabbits and it was such an excellent read. If you are into rabbit and all the information on the history, myths and legends as well as how people look at rabbits in the world today. You will truely love this book, its has so much information on rabbits / hares that I jsut could not put it down.
I have a great love for rabbits and this made me appreicate them even more.

  4. I had high expectations for this book having lived with bunnies in our home for 17 years. The only people interested in this book would be
people who already had rabbits and knew all about them. But the book
was written for the novice - for someone who knew nothing. Anyway,
the cover was lovely but the book itself - well, I skimmed it and put
it away. Everything the authors said could have been said on pretty much a couple pages.

  5. I enjoyed this book. A must have for rabbit lovers and people who want to get to know rabbits more than what they seem to be...Contains loads of info about rabbits and some cute rabbit pictures too. This book is a work of art! It's wonderfully written, it speaks out for all the rabbits around the world.

5 comments about Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Ferrets, Rabbits & Rodents).

  1. I have the previous edition of "the pink book", and knowledge has advanced in these species such that I desperately needed the new edition. An excellent text that is a must have if you see small mammal patients.

  2. I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!.... This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often. I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

  3. As a ferret owner, you have the responsibility to know what diseases or cancers your ferret could get, and for making sure they get the proper treatment as soon as possible. Early diagnosis is the key. This is one of the best books you will find and it's more than worth the money invested. Every ferret owner should have a personal copy. Check with your vet to see if they have a copy as well, this is an awesome Christmas present. Read! Highlight! Consult! Together, you can extend the life of your ferret.

  4. This is that kind of book , that helps you to increase your knowledgement.
For every veterinary and student who work with Ferrets, Rabbits, or Rodents.

  5. This book is the absolute best resource on the medicine of these species. The book is easy to follow and find specific information as necessary. Most illustrations are quite useful, although in black and white. The book is organized mostly by taxonomic groups. However, the book seems to repeat itself in some chapters as well as in different chapters, and sometimes, finding information may be indexed in more than one place only to find that they are all quite similar pieces of information. I HIGHLY reccomend this book, and its is the best amount of informtion at a very affordable price.
